Rudolf Carl Axel Faehlmann (1864–1942) was an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy, a master mariner, and a yachtsman.
Life
[edit]Rudolf Faehlmann was born on 26 December 1864 in Reval (Tallinn). His parentes were Carl Johann and Auguste Faehlmann née Bong. As a youngster he sailed on various sailing vessels during summer vacations. 1882-1885 Garde Marine School in St Petersburg, during leave (September 1883) he helped to rescue the crew of the Italian brigg ”Katharina” which during a storm had come adrift in the roads of Reval. He was awarded the Rescue Medal in silver by Alexander III. 1887-1888 Specializing as navigation officer.
1889-1891 Sails on board the frigate ”Wladimir Monomach” on a voyage to the Far East, from Piraeus, in company with the ”Pamjat Asowa” with the successor to the throne Nikolaj Alexandrowitch on board. 1892 Enrolled in the Siberian Fleet. 1893 Marries Seraphine Sakin. 1897 Joins the Russian Voluntary Navy and sails between Vladivostok and Europe. 1900 Family returens to Europe and settles in St Petersburg. Leaves the Navy and sails on bordercontrol ships. 1902–1904 Imperial Navy, navigation officer on the ”Knajs Poscharsky” and ”General Amiral Apraxin”.
1904-1917 Master of the ice breaket ”Jermak” (Yermak (1898 icebreaker)), at the time the world's largest (St Petersburg/Riga/Reval). 1905-1906 Expedition to the Arctic Ocean with the ”Jermak”. 1917 Leaves the ”Jermak” and the Imerial Navy and becomes agent for the Russian Voluntary Navy in Port Said.
For his services on board the ”Jermak” he was awarded the Danish Dannebrog Order, the Norwegian St Olav Order, the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle, the Russian Wladimir Order IV class and III class to be worn around the neck and the Russin St Anna Order II class with sword.
1928 Had a severe fall, left the Voluntary Navy and returned Tallinn. Expert to the Tallinn Harbour Authorities. 1939 Migrated to Germany. Died in Posen (Poznan) on 3 September 1942.
In the 1910s Rudolf Faehlmann was Vice Commodore to the ESYC yacht club. He was elected Honorary membrer of ESYC.
Rudolf Faehlmann had two sons, Georg Faehlmann and Andreas Faehlmann, both Olympic medalists (sailing) 1928.
His granduncle was the distinguished Estonian phililogist and physician Friedrich Robert Faehlmann.
