Reena Deen (Zareena Nazimudeen, born on 25 December 1982) is a Singaporean director & screenwriter. She is the best known for producing, directing and writing The Damned Ones, which is Singapore’s first Indie supernatural mystery feature made by a disabled team[1]. She also wrote, directed and produced the short film Amanda and Sheldon Takes On The World which was featured in the in the 2024 Easterseals Disability Film challenge[2].

Education

Deen has not attended a traditional film school. Instead, she learnt filmmaking from Kino Red Dot, which is a community filmmaking club in Singapore, founded by Alexandre Fernandez[3]. She took the SGUS Writers’ Training program from Singapore Media Academy and graduated in 2021[1][4][5]. She also graduated from Cardiff University, Wales, United Kingdom in 2008 with a master's in international public relations.

Career

In 2023, she wrote and directed a short documentary drama, titled We Are Invincible, which was about the making of The Damned Ones. It screened at the Iaminvisible film festival (held in Singapore in November 2023)[6]. This documentary won a Commendation Award from Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency MP Louis Ng[6][1].

Deen also wrote and directed a second short documentary drama which chronicled the cast and crew's journey in making the film, The Damned Ones. This screened at the 2023 Pokka Film Festival in Singapore, where it took third place, and was awarded $5000 by Pokka to offset the feature film’s post-production costs[7].

In 2024, Deen’s short film, Amanda and Sheldon Takes On The World, which she wrote, directed and produced, participated in the 2024 Easterseals Disability Film challenge[8].

She has dyslexia and Complex post-traumatic stress disorder and writes books and makes films that explore topics like mental health, abuse and learning disabilities[1][9][10]. She also tutors students with learning disabilities[1][10].
