Rana Tonjong Lake
[edit]Rana Tonjong Lake is located in Pota Village, Sambi Rampas Subdistrict, East Manggarai Regency. In the local Manggarai dialect, rana means lake and tonjong means lotus. This lake is hundreds of years old.
East Manggarai Regency is home to one of the largest lotus lakes in the world.[1] The local people call it Danau Rana Tonjong or Lotus Lake. One of the main attractions of this lake is the vast expanse of lotus flowers that cover its surface. Anyone who visits is guaranteed to be amazed by the beauty of the lotus blooms. The lake spans 2.5 hectares and the lotus flowers here bloom every year from April to June. The lotus seeds are even consumed by the local community for their healing properties.
History
[edit]Rana Tonjong lies in a lowland area surrounded by hills to the west, south, and north, with expansive rice fields to the east. Rana Tonjong is unique because it is covered by giant water lilies (Victoria Amazonica), known locally as Tonjong. These lilies cover the entire surface of the lake, making it appear as if there is no visible water. The water lilies thrive year-round but only bloom once a year, between April and June. Another unique feature is that inside the fully bloomed flowers, there are seeds the size of peanuts that can be eaten raw or cooked. These seeds taste like peanuts and contain oil. Additionally, this water lily cannot grow anywhere else except in Rana Tonjong Lake.
The lotus plants here have long leaf stems that can reach up to 2 meters in length, unlike the typical lotus plants that float on the water's surface. Additionally, the flower stems are taller than the leaf stems. The beauty and uniqueness of this lake have become a draw for tourists wishing to explore Rana Tonjong in East Manggarai.[2] The surrounding natural environment, which remains pristine and unspoiled, is a feast for the eyes of visitors. The lotus flowers are also commonly consumed by the locals, who believe they can cure various ailments.
The lotus flowers in Rana Tonjong Lake are not like typical lotuses that spread across the water's surface. These aquatic plants grow upright, much like Thales plants, with stems reaching up to three meters high, leaves that can grow up to 30 cm wide, and flowers that measure up to 25 cm in size.
To reach this location, there are two possible routes. The first route is from Borong, the capital of East Manggarai Regency, and from Ruteng City in Manggarai.
From Borong: Head towards the Bealaing Intersection, then continue to Watunggong. Next, head to Lengko Ajang and then Pota. The journey covers about 130 kilometers and takes around 5 hours.
From Ruteng: Travel through Reok and continue to Pota. This route is around 90 kilometers, with a travel time of approximately 4 hours. The accessibility to this tourist attraction is possible by motorbike or car.
There are no specific operational hours for the lake, but if you want to enjoy the natural beauty without any disturbances, it is recommended to visit between 08:00 and 16:00 WITA. Entrance to this tourist site is free of charge.
