Viktor Rafael Schauman (September 19, 1860, Taivassalo – December 26, 1946, Helsinki) was a Finnish Major General, and a member of the Schauman noble family. He was the first director of the Cadet School in 1919, the same year he was promoted to Major General.[1]

Schauman's parents were Captain and Estate Inspector Knut Otto Schauman (1827–1888)[2] and Eva Constance Elisabet Holmberg. His wife from 1890 was Ellen Matilda Österblad.[3] Their son, Erik Rafael Schauman, was a doctor specializing in lung diseases and married Elli Ståhlberg, the daughter of President K. J. Ståhlberg.[4]

Schauman graduated from the Hamina Cadet School in 1882. He served as an officer in the 2nd Turku Sharpshooter Battalion of Finland from 1882 to 1901. He was the leader of the guard unit assigned to protect the Parliament during the 1905–1906 period and the head of the State Police School from 1906 to 1910. Schauman also served as the administrator of police facilities and was the director of Sandudd Oy from 1910 to 1912, followed by leading Grankulla Oy from 1912 to 1914, and J. Österblad & Co Oy in Turku from 1914 to 1917.[3]

Lieutenant Colonel Schauman was a member of the Military Committee preparing for the Finnish War of Independence from August 1917. In September 1917, he was selected as a member of the committee that dealt with the issue of establishing the Civil Guard, which essentially functioned as the committee preparing the conscription law.[4][1]

During the Finnish Civil War in the spring of 1918, Schauman became a general and served as a liaison officer between the government of Mannerheim and the Civil Guard of Southern Finland. He was promoted to Colonel in 1918 and became a member of the War Court that same year. Schauman also served as the Inspector of Law and Order from 1918 to 1919 and was responsible for organizing and leading the Cadet School in 1919. He resigned from his post as Major General.[3][1]
