Oscar's Trash Race is a 1984 edutainment video game developed by Atari Inc. and Children's Computer Workshop and published by Atari for the Atari 2600. It is based off the Sesame Street series and stars Oscar The Grouch. The game teaches younger players basic directional and numerical concepts through simple gameplay.

Oscar's Trash Race was made as A part of A series of Sesame Street video games that were played using the Kid's Controller, a redesigned version of the Keyboard Controller.

Gameplay

[edit]

The player first matches the number of objects found on the road with one of three numbered trash cans. Once the correct trash can is selected, the player then uses directional inputs to collect the objects and the cycle repeats.

There are 6 additional variations of basic gameplay.[4] These variants increase the difficulty of the game by adding puddles that need to be jumped over in order to continue. Some variants allow for competitive multiplayer with a second human controlled player.

The game was made to be played using the Kid's Controller, a reworked version of the Keyboard Controller designed for younger children[5]

Development

[edit]

Oscar's Trash Race was developed by the Children's Computer Workshop, A now defunct part of the Sesame Workshop, in conjunction with Atari. The game was a part of A campaign by Atari to market games for children, which included titles such as Cookie Monster Munch, Snoopy and The Red Baron, and Sorcerer's Apprentice. This campaign was announced in early 1983 via A print ad, with the game itself announced later that same year.[6]

Reception

[edit]

Oscar's Trash Race received positive reviews from critics of the time.
