Medinipuri Odia (Odia: ମେଦିନୀପୁରି ଓଡ଼ିଆ) or Medinipuria is a dialect of the Odia language spoken in the Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts of West Bengal. It is also spoken in the nearby towns of Jaleswar and Udaypur in Odisha.[1]

Grammatical Features
[edit]The Medinipuri variety is influenced by Bengali due to its geographical location of the Southwestern region of West Bengal and majority in these districts comprising of Bengali speakers.
The features of the variety are as follows (Standard Odia followed by Medinipuria):[2]
- Word Final Vowel Deletion (Schwa deletion)
Eg.- In this Genitive case, ଲୋକର (lokara) - ଲୋକର୍ (lokar)
- Some phonetic shifts in verb conjugation- 'nt' to 'it' or 'n', 'chh' to 'ch'
Eg.- doing (formal)- କରୁଛନ୍ତି (karuchhanti) - କରୁଚନ୍ (karuchan), he would have done- କରନ୍ତା (karantā) - କରିତା (karitā), he has done- କରିଛି (karichhi) - କରିଚି (karichi)
- Case variations
Locative- 'ra' instead of 're', outside- ବାହାରର (bāhārra), in the house- ଘରର (gharra)

Literature
[edit]Rasakeḷī is one of the few remaining literatures in this dialect. Divided into 4 paragraphs, it describes various Leelas between Krishna and gopis. It is read during Panchaka.
