Cast
[edit]Production
[edit]In May 2018, it was announced that Reese Witherspoon was working on a script for the film,[1] and that the original screenwriters from the first Legally Blonde film, Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith, where also working on the film's script.[2]
In May 2020, it was announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor would write an entirely new script for the film.[3] In October 2020, it was announced that Jamie Suk would be directing the film.[4]
The film is expected to be produced by Witherspoon though Hello Sunshine and Marc Platt, Lauren Neustadter and Adam Siegel through Marc Platt Productions.[5][3][6]
The script was still being written as of December 2021, with the expectation of it being completed by the first quarter of 2022. This iteration sees Elle Woods as a mother aged 40, still maintaining her career in law. Also by that point, MGM was hopeful that Luke Wilson would reprise his character of Emmett Richmond from the first two films.[7] In February 2025, Karling and Goor revalved that they finished a draft of the script and turned it in back in Christmas 2024.[8]
Release
[edit]The film was scheduled to be released on May 8, 2020 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[9][10] It was initially reported in June 2018 that the film would be released on February 14, 2020, on Valentine's Day.[11][12]
In October 2020, MGM confirmed via their official social media that Legally Blonde 3 would be released on May 20, 2022, though it did not meet this date.[4]
