Laurel Schwulst (born 1988) is an American graphic designer, artist, writer, educator, and programmer based in New York.[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life & education

Schwulst was born and raised in Normal, Illinois.[4]

Schwulst graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010.[6]

Creative practice

Schwulst is recognized for her interactive design work, her writing, her websites, her internet art, and her teaching methods.[7][8][9][10][11]

Design career

Following school, Schwulst worked at the design studio Linked by Air in New York City.[12] At Linked by Air, Schwulst designed websites for the Yale AIDS Memorial Project, Printed Matter, artist Julia Kim Smith, and the architectural studio, Future Expansion.[citation needed]

In 2016, Schwulst was hired to be Creative Director of The Creative Independent, an arts publication run by Kickstarter.[13][14] Schwulst designed the identity and website and conducted published interviews with numerous artists, designers, and creatives including: Min Guhong, Sara Magenheimer, Charles Broskoski (Are.na), Tamara Shopsin, Erin Jane Nelson, Taeyoon Choi, Qiong Li, and Tania Pérez Córdova.[citation needed] Schwulst worked as Creative Director at The Creative Independent until 2017.[citation needed]

Schwulst collaborated with artist Sydney Shen on a perfume review website called Perfume Area.[15] In 2015, Schwulst and Shen adapted the website into a book published by Ambient Works, New York.[16][15]

Since 2017 Schwulst has been working independently. She designed the websites for 'T' Space Rhinebeck, a multidisciplinary arts organization started by architect Steven Holl in Rhinebeck, New York, and Artists Space.[citation needed] She also released an app called Flight Simulator "Ode to Airplane Mode" in collaboration with Soft, on February 5, 2019.[17][18]

In 2021, Schwulst released How To Build a Kite, a craft tutorial that "doubles as a meditative experience" published on the New York Times website.[19]

Schwulst has designed fonts including the Times Dot font, a version of Times New Roman.[20]

Schwulst is an advocate for a PBS of the internet, a non-profit "public broadcasting system for the for the modern digital, networked age".[2][4]

Schwulst serves as director of the gift shop at Are.na.[5]

Teaching

Schwulst has taught at multiple institutions including Yale School of Art and Princeton University.[21] Schwulst began teaching at Yale in 2013.[citation needed] In 2018, Schwulst was awarded an Inspiring Yale award for her work as a designer and teacher.[22]

Schwulsts inventive approach to pedagogy with her courses often credited as inspiration and exercises, like her coding from life workshop, frequently reproduced.[23][24][25][26]

Schwulst co-founded HTML Energy with artist Elliot Cost.[3] HTML Energy is a community that advocates for the Hypertext Markup Language through educational meet-up and other events.[3]

On February 26, 2024, Schwulst spoke as a guest lecturer in the Robert B Church III Memorial Lecture Series at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Architecture and Design.[27]
