Kampala Library and Information Centre also called KCCA Library or Kampala Public Library, is one of the oldest public libraries in Uganda.[1] Currently, the Adult Library is located at City Hall - KCCA Headquarters as the Main Library and is run by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Act of 2010. [2][3]
Background
[edit]Kampala Library and Information Center is located at KCCA Headquarters (City Hall) and has two branches around the city, namely the Lubaga Division Urban Council Public Library which is one of the most functional branches. It is also known as KCCA Library, and is one of the oldest public libraries in Uganda. It serves as a resource for the residents of Kampala, providing access to a range of educational materials and information services.[2]
Events and Services
[edit]KLIC comprises two main sections: the Adults Library and the Children’s Library.[1] The Adults Library caters to individuals aged 13 years and older, while the Children’s Library is designed for young readers between 4 to 12 years old.[1] Children under 5 may use the library if accompanied by an adult. Community Reading Tent (CRT)[4]
Community Reading Tent (CRT)
The Community Reading Tent (CRT) is an initiative aimed at promoting a culture of reading within the community. It provides a relaxed and informal setting for people of all ages to read and discuss books. The CRT often features guest readers, storytelling sessions, and book discussions.[5]
Mobile School Library Services
KLIC operates Mobile School Library Services to extend its reach beyond the physical library. This service brings books and educational resources directly to schools, particularly those in underserved areas. School Visits to the Children’s Library
KLIC organizes regular school visits to the Children’s Library. These visits introduce students to the library’s resources and encourage them to become regular library users. Activities during these visits often include guided tours, storytelling sessions, and interactive reading activities.[5]
DEAR Day/Week Celebrations
Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Day/Week is an annual event celebrated at KLIC to encourage reading among all age groups. During DEAR celebrations, participants are encouraged to stop their usual activities and spend time reading[6]. The event includes various activities such as reading marathons, book fairs, and author visits.
School Library Development
KLIC is involved in the development of school libraries. This includes providing support and resources to help schools establish and maintain their own libraries. The initiative aims to improve access to books and educational materials for students, thereby enhancing their learning experience.[7]
Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee is a popular event at KLIC, aimed at improving spelling and vocabulary skills among students. Participants compete in spelling challenges, and the event often culminates in a grand finale where the top spellers are recognized and awarded prizes. The Spelling Bee fosters a spirit of healthy competition and encourages students to expand their language skills.[5]
