Jode Gannon (born 6 October 1990) is an Australian singer-songwriter known for his contributions to the indie folk and alternative rock music scenes. Gannon gained recognition with his debut album 3 Hours (2015) and later formed The Jode Gannon Band. His music blends folk, rock, blues, and pop, earning him critical acclaim and international recognition. In 2023, he signed a major publishing deal with De Wolfe Music, leading to placements in film and television soundtracks.[1]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Jode Gannon was born in Sydney, Australia, and later moved to Woodford, Queensland. He grew up in a musical family—his father, Tony Gannon, was the lead guitarist of the English punk band Pakov Liez. Influenced by punk, jazz, and rock, he developed an interest in music at an early age.

Gannon attended Matraville Soldiers Settlement School and began playing percussion before transitioning to guitar at age 10. He wrote his first song in high school and later studied music performance at JMC Academy in Brisbane.

Career

[edit]

Early Career and Breakthrough (2015–2016)

[edit]

Gannon released his debut album, 3 Hours, in 2015, collaborating with producer Ric Laurance. The album blended indie rock, folk, and alternative influences, receiving positive reviews.[2]

In 2016, he signed with Animal Farm Records, a London-based label, and released the EP Care Factor Zero. The lead single, Little Honey, topped Australian charts for three weeks and helped establish him in the folk-rock scene.[2]

The Jode Gannon Band (2020–Present)

[edit]

In 2020, Gannon relocated to the United Kingdom and formed The Jode Gannon Band, a four-piece rock group blending folk and country elements. The band gained recognition for their live performances and songwriting. Their 2021 single, Love Don't Bring Me Down, was followed by Rebel Without a Cause (2022) and Darkest Oceans (2023).[3]

Early Career and Breakthrough (2021)

[edit]

In 2021, Australian singer-songwriter Jode Gannon and fellow Banbury-based key worker Mathew Cartwright announced the release of their debut single, Sunken Ships. The single was a result of their shared experiences as frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both Gannon and Cartwright were working essential jobs throughout the crisis, and the song reflects the emotional challenges and growth they encountered during this difficult time.[4]

The Banbury Guardian article highlighted the resilience and strength shown by Gannon and Cartwright, as they navigated their demanding work while also pursuing their passion for music. The release of Sunken Ships marked a significant milestone in Gannon’s musical journey, with its poignant lyrics about overcoming personal adversity and navigating the storms of life. The song quickly gained attention for its raw emotion and its powerful message of hope.[4]

In 2023, the band released Don't Let The Fire Go Out, produced in collaboration with French DJ Arthur Conseil. The song gained traction in the UK and Europe.[5]

Major Publishing Deal

[edit]

In 2023, Gannon secured a three-year publishing and sync deal with De Wolfe Music, a major independent production music library. The deal facilitated the placement of his music in television, films, and advertisements.[1] His music was later featured on BBC programming.[6]

Recent Work and Influence

[edit]

In December 2023, Gannon met Johana Arenas while traveling in Portugal. Their relationship inspired his 2024 single, December 16, reflecting themes of love and personal growth.[7]

Gannon is also involved in philanthropic efforts, working to establish a special needs center in the Algarve, Portugal, to support children and adults with disabilities.[8]

Jode Gannon's musical style has been compared to that of Simon & Garfunkel, Elliott Smith, Damien Rice, Iron & Wine, and Joshua Radin. A review on Melodic.net described Joshua Radin’s album *We Were Here* as "heavily acoustic indie Folk/Pop, and is especially reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel, Elliott Smith, Jode Gannon, Damien Rice and Iron & Wine."[9]
