Jaka Ivančič (born May 13, 1979, in Koper) is a Slovenian landscape photographer, musician, and radio personality.

His photographs have been featured in promotional campaigns for Slovenia and published in magazines, catalogues, and books.[1] In addition to his photography career, he works as a journalist, photographer, and producer on Radio Capris.[2]

Biography

[edit]

Jaka Ivančič established himself as a self-taught photographer and became a recognized professional. In 2015, at the Expo Milano exhibition, he created a series of photographs featuring Istrian–Karst culinary specialties commissioned by Slovenian exhibitors.[3] Prior to that, he extensively photographed for municipalities, hotels, and other institutions, gradually building his reputation through social media.

His career began in the late 1990s when he was known by the nickname Nervus. He was active on IRC and later on the portal obala.net, where he worked as an editor and photographer, organized events, designed websites for musical groups, and even served as manager, vocalist, and trumpeter for the band Pudding Fields. His musical journey led him to Radio Capris, where in 2004 he began hosting the Italian music show Capital, which ran for ten years. Later, he established himself as a producer for the morning program as well as the web and social media manager, photographer, and journalist at the station.[2]

Photography became central to his life when he invested in professional equipment upon founding his company. Initially, he focused on photographing concerts and social events before shifting his attention to culinary and landscape photography. He was particularly drawn to capturing food in coastal restaurants and documenting culinary experiences during his travels abroad on the portal regionalobala.si.[3]

Landscape photography soon emerged as his main field of work. He regularly highlights the beauty of Istria and Slovenia, often comparing them to exotic destinations. He has shared his expertise through photography workshops, emphasizing the importance of attentiveness to one’s surroundings and the search for aesthetic moments in nature. According to him, photographers notice more details and natural beauty than others, enabling them to create unique images.[3]

Ivančič has received several awards for his work. In 2018, National Geographic selected one of his photographs as one of the "Best Landscape Photographs of the Year."[4] He was ranked among the "TOP 10 Instagram Photographers in Slovenia" and twice among the "Oneeyeland WORLD'S TOP 10 Landscape Photographers."[5][6] In 2019, he received the IPA (International Photo Awards), and in 2022 he won the Landscape category at the Sarajevo Photography Awards.[7][8]

He was appointed the first ambassador of the Debeli Rtič Landscape Park.[9] His work has been featured in several Slovenian and international media, including National Geographic Slovenia[1], Delo, and Dnevnik.[10][11][12] His photographs have also appeared on 24ur.com.[13][14] International media such as the New York Post have also published his work.[15]

Quote by Arne Hodalič

[edit]

Arne Hodalič, a renowned Slovenian photographer and photography editor at National Geographic Slovenia, said about Jaka Ivančič: > "But Jaka Ivančič is a master of just that... Being in the right place at the right time! When I see his photographs, I often ask myself, 'How did he manage to do that?'"[16]
