Hermawi Franziskus Taslim, S.H. (born October 6, 1961) is an Indonesian politician currently serving as the Secretary-General of the NasDem Party. Following the III Congress, Surya Paloh was re-elected as the Chairman of the NasDem Party and appointed Hermawi Taslim as the Secretary-General. Prior to joining NasDem, Hermawi was a member of the National Awakening Party (PKB) until his dismissal in 2013.

Hermawi Franziskus Taslim, S.H. (born October 6, 1961) is an Indonesian[1] politician. currently serving as the Secretary-General of the NasDem Party. Following the III Congress, Surya Paloh was re-elected as the Chairman of the NasDem Party and appointed Hermawi Taslim as the Secretary-General. Prior to joining NasDem, Hermawi was a member of the National Awakening Party (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa - PKB) until his dismissal in 2013.[2]

Background and education

Hermawi Fransiskus Taslim was born in Padang, Sumatera Barat on October 6, 1961. He is of Chinese Padang descent[3] and practices Chatholism.[4] He was recognized as one of the 21 Christian Figures by Narwastu magazine in 2013.[5] He also served as the Chairman of the Alumni Communication Forum of the Indonesian Catholic Students Association (Perhimpunan Mahasiswa Katolik Republik Indonesia).[6]

Hermawi completed his primary education at BNKP in Pulau Tello, Kabupaten Nias Selatan (1974), Frater Padang Junior High School (1977), dan Senior High School Don Bosco Padang (1981). He complete his Bachelor of Law from faculcity of law Universitas Sumatera Utara in 1987. and pursued further studies at the Driyarkara School of Philosophy (Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat Driyarkara) in 2002.[7]

Political career

Hermawi's political journey began as a member of Partai Demokrasi Indonesia (PDI) during Orde Baru, ehere he served as the Deputy Secretary of the Regional :eadeship Council in Jakarta. He has close relation with Abdurrahman Wahid the founder of Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) early reform period. From 2002 - 2005 he held the position of Deputy Secretary-General of PKB at the central level. after the election 2004, he worked as an expert staff member at the People's Consultative Assembly until 2007. In 2005, Hermawi was appointed as the chairman of the central Executive Board of PKB for the 2005-2010 term.[7]

Hermawi and party officials from Abdurrahman Wahid faction experienced conflicts with PKB under Muhaimin Iskandar. They even field a lawsuit against the decision issued by the Indonesian Minister of Law and Human Rights regarding the establishment of Muhaimin's PKB leadership.[8]

In 2013, Hermawi was dismissed from PKB under Muhaimin Iskandar leadership. Shortly thereafter, he, along with Effendy Choirie—a former PKB cadre—joined the NasDem Party.[2] In 2015 he was entrusted with the role of Deputy Secretary-General of NasDem. In May 2023, Surya Paloh appointed Hermawi as the acting Secretary-general of the NasDem Party.[9] Following the 3rd congress, Surya Paloh wa re-elected as The Chairman and appointed Hermawi Taslim as The Secretary-General of the NasDem Party. Currently, he also serves as the Chaiman of the Nusantara Professional Advocates Brotherhood (PERADI Pergerakan) for the 2024-2028 term.
