The Garabogazköl Bridge (Russian: Мост через залив Гарабогазгол, lit. 'Bridge over the Garabogazköl lagoon') is a bridge under construction in Balkan Region, Turkmenistan which will connect the M37 highway to the Garabogaz and Türkmenbaşy over the Garabogazköl lagoon. The bridge is designed to connect the western region of Turkmenistan with Kazakhstan, strengthen transport and logistics links in the region and develop the International North–South Transport Corridor. History and construction
[edit]The bridge project was initiated as part of the program to modernize Turkmenistan's transport infrastructure. [3]Construction began in July 2022. [4][5]The customer is the State Agency for Management of Road Construction of Turkmenistan, and the contractor is the Ukrainian company Altcom LLC. [6][7] [8] [4] Steel structures for the bridge are supplied from Turkey, Germany and the UK. [9][10]
As of February 2025, work is actively underway to concretize the supports (piles, columns, crossbars), assemble metal structures, install control panels and insulate the bridge elements. Access roads are prepared for asphalt paving. Completion of construction is scheduled for May 2025. [11][12][13]
Design
[edit]The bridge is 354 meters long, 17 meters wide and 7 meters high above the bay and will provide four-lane traffic (two lanes in each direction). The spans are made of metal structures (110 and 64 meters) and reinforced concrete beams. There are also 2-meter-wide pedestrian zones with lighting and fencing. 2 km of access roads adjoin the bridge. [14]
Along the Turkmenbashi — Garabogaz — Kazakhstan border highway, the contractor is required to build rest areas for drivers and passengers, a hotel, service centers, bus stops, and install automated systems for monitoring vehicle weight and dimensions, lighting, and road signs. [15]
Significance

The bridge will replace an old two-lane structure that cannot handle the load. [16]
The bridge across the Garabogazköl is of international importance, contributing to the development of transport links between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. [17][18]It will become part of the highway linking the port of Türkmenbaşy on the Caspian Sea with the border of Kazakhstan, which will enhance the transit potential of the region and facilitate cargo and passenger transportation. It is expected that the facility will enhance Turkmenistan's economic integration into the global space. [19]
The traffic will be 1,200 vehicles per day.[20][21]
