Elli Cares is a New Zealand mobile application released in 2023. The application was designed to support those with dementia by enabling them to lead independent lives. Elli Cares has received grants from the Roddenberry Foundation, Callaghan Innovation, and the Selwyn Foundation.
History
[edit]Elli Cares app was founded by Angela Edwards and Paul Nichols, former employees of MYER.[1]. Nichols, whose grandmother had dementia, told Edwards about his idea to start an application to support those with dementia, and how he had been to Italy for an incubator but that the idea was not progressing[1]. Edwards was impressed with the idea and the pair started working together. Nichols stepped away from Elli Cares early 2024[1]
In August 2023, a beta version of the app was launched. Following the success of the beta version, the app went live to the public in March 2024, led by Edwards.
Features
[edit]Elli Cares offers a variety of features designed to support individuals with early-to-mid stage cognitive impairment, such as dementia, and their caregivers.[2].
- Reminders: Elli Cares provides customizable alerts for tasks, appointments, and medications. This helps users with memory issues stay on track with their daily routines. In late 2024, a new feature was released giving users the ability to set video reminders.
- Safe Zones: The app allows creation of designated safe zones, like a home or familiar surroundings. If a user wanders outside these zones, they'll receive automated notifications with support and directions to help them return safely.
- Real-time Alerts: Family members can receive alerts if their loved one misses a reminder or leaves a safe zone. This provides peace of mind and allows for timely intervention if needed.
- Family Connectivity: Elli Cares facilitates unobtrusive oversight by family members. Caregivers can monitor activity logs, battery levels, and receive updates without intruding on the user's independence.
