Darren Dowler (also known as Darren Dollar[1]) is an American musician and actor from Indiana. A tenor singer, he has performed in many American groups including The Lettermen, Paul Revere & the Raiders, and currently Jay and the Americans. Dowler has performed on stage with Bill Medley, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Al Jardine, Mitch Ryder, Chuck Negron, Mary Wilson, The Fifth Dimension, The Backstreet Boys, The O'Jays, The Jordanaires, and Jerry Lee Lewis.[2] As an actor, he has worked with Steven Spielberg, Billy Bob Thornton, Will Smith, Shia LaBeouf, and Michelle Monaghan.[3]
Career
[edit]He started acting in 1990 under the name Darren Dollar. He appeared in two episodes of Superboy, and uncredited roles in Erin Brockovich and Hancock.[1] In 2009, he began work as a director/producer for his film "Rock and Roll: The Movie", which was released in 2016.[1][4]
Dowler was the first guitarist for The Backstreet Boys in 1991. From 1995 to 2005, Dowler was the first tenor vocalist in The Lettermen. He joined Paul Revere & the Raiders in 2008 as a guitarist. In 2014, not long before his death, Paul Revere asked Dowler to produce a new Raiders' album, the groups first in over 35 years. He left the group in 2019, and since 2024, has toured in Jay and the Americans.[5]
Dowler's works have been praised by Paul Revere, Gary Puckett, B.J. Thomas, and Davy Jones.[6]
