The company was founded in 2016 by Aman Gupta and Sameer Mehta[4], focusing on personal audio and lifestyle accessories. BoAt serves both the consumer and professional audio markets, offering a wide range of products, including wireless earbuds, headphones, Bluetooth speakers, soundbars, and smartwatches. Their audio lineup includes waterproof portable speakers, gaming headsets, and high-performance sound systems. BoAt Lifestyle has established itself as a leading brand in India’s audio segment, known for its stylish, durable, and affordable products.
History
[edit]BoAt Lifestyle was founded in 2016 by Aman Gupta and Sameer Mehta in Mumbai, India. The company was established with the vision of creating affordable, stylish, and durable audio accessories tailored for Indian consumers.[4][5]
Before founding BoAt, Aman Gupta had a strong background in finance and sales. He worked as the Director of Sales at Harman International, a global audio giant and subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. He also pursued an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and was a Chartered Accountant by qualification. His expertise in the audio industry and consumer behavior helped shape BoAt’s market strategy.[5] Meanwhile, Sameer Mehta, an experienced entrepreneur, had been involved in the consumer electronics sector through his company Redwood Interactive[6], which distributed global audio brands in India. With Mehta’s deep understanding of the electronics distribution market and Gupta’s corporate experience, the duo identified a massive gap in India’s premium-yet-affordable audio market and decided to launch BoAt.
BoAt’s first product was not an earphone but a reinforced, durable charging cable for Apple devices, designed to withstand bending and breaking, a common issue faced by users. This product quickly gained traction, becoming a bestseller on Amazon India. Encouraged by this success, BoAt expanded into wired and wireless earphones, Bluetooth speakers, and headphones, positioning itself as an Indian alternative to international brands like JBL, Sony, and Bose.
Between 2018 and 2020, BoAt aggressively marketed its products using social media influencers, Bollywood celebrities, and cricketers, making the brand synonymous with a youthful, trendy lifestyle. The company also capitalized on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, driving massive sales volumes through online discounts and exclusive deals. This strategy helped BoAt become India’s fastest-growing audio brand, selling millions of units across the country.
In 2020, BoAt secured ₹740 crore ($100 million) in funding from Warburg Pincus[7], a global private equity firm. This investment fueled the company’s expansion into smartwatches, gaming accessories, and soundbars. The company also focused on localizing its manufacturing under the "Make in India" initiative, reducing dependence on Chinese imports. By 2022, BoAt had become India’s No. 1 brand in wireless audio devices and smart wearables[8][2], consistently outselling global competitors.
Today, BoAt continues to grow, expanding into international markets like the Middle East and Southeast Asia[9] while maintaining its dominance in India. The brand remains a symbol of affordable luxury in the audio segment, offering stylish, durable, and feature-packed products at competitive prices.
