The Battle of Tanjung Kunyit took place on May 22, 1972, in the Tanjung Kunyit area, Bintangor, Sarawak, Malaysia.[3][4] This battle involved the Malaysian military, particularly the 1st Battalion of the Royal Rangers Regiment, Company D, which consisted of Iban Rangers, and the communist forces from the North Kalimantan Communist Party (NKCP).[5]
Background
[edit]In early 1972, the communist forces operating in Sarawak, especially the NKCP, intensified their activities by launching attacks on Malaysian security forces.[6] In response, the 1st Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, Company D, which was made up of Iban Rangers known for their expertise in the jungle, was deployed to the Tanjung Kunyit area to carry out a cleansing operation and eliminate any remaining communist forces still operating in the area.
Battle
[edit]On May 22, 1972, Platoon 11 of Company D, consisting of six Iban Rangers, was assigned to patrol the north-western area of Tanjung Kunyit. During the patrol, they encountered a group of about 30 communist members, both men and women.[7] A fierce battle ensued for approximately 15 minutes, during which both sides exchanged gunfire. During the battle, the female communist members attempted to attack with Iban swords but were defeated by the Iban Rangers.[8] Eventually, the communist forces were forced to retreat, leaving several of their members dead.[9]
Following the battle, the Iban Rangers conducted a sweep of the area and discovered the bodies of several fallen communist members. They also seized several weapons and documents belonging to the communist forces.[10][9]
