Draft:B & O Trail in Indiana

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The B&O Trail is one of Indiana's premier Rail to Trails systems. Based out of Brownsburg, Indiana - This trail runs from Indianapolis through western Indiana and is supported by the B&O Trail Associaction Inc. (BOTA) out of Hendricks County. The history of BOTA stems from a few local residents seeking to reuse this vital system for a new life in 1994 for local communities as a greenway. The plan was to start the east end of this in Indianapolis and extend through western Marion County, connecting to Hendricks County communities of Brownsburg, North Salem, Roachdale, Russleville and Marshall until finally crossing the Wabash River at Montezuma near the Illinois border.

Based on the old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) in 1927, this railroad was eventually passed thru multiple systems finally becoming part of the CSX line in the 1980's. As national rail use declined this railroad segment fell into disrepair and abandonment around the early 1990's. This all-volunteer organization has been dedicated to extending the initial start of the trail in the late 1990s to over 5 miles and growing thanks to the State's Next Level Trail initiative.

The B&O Trail continues to grow as it has connected to the Town of Speedway and with the Speedway Trail Association in 2022. The trail is host to multiple events that include the annual fundraising bike ride, fun runs, bird watching activities and other local events.
