Arrowhead Transit is a public transportation provider serving ten counties in northeastern Minnesota. Established in 1974, it is the largest rural public transit system in the state, covering 21,968 square miles. The agency operates fixed-route, demand-response, and commuter services to connect rural communities with employment centers, medical facilities, and educational institutions.
History
[edit]Arrowhead Transit was established in 1974 as a division of the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (AEOA), initially providing transportation services for seniors. The system expanded rapidly through partnerships with local governments and community organizations. By the mid-1980s, Arrowhead Transit had grown into a ten-county transit network, serving a diverse range of passengers, including seniors, individuals with disabilities, and general public riders.
A significant milestone occurred in 1986 when Arrowhead Transit became one of the largest rural public transit providers in the country. The organization continued to expand services, adding commuter routes, Dial-A-Ride options, and inter-county connections. In 2025, Arrowhead Transit launched the RideSmart 2025 initiative to improve transit efficiency in Chisago and Isanti counties.
Services

- Fixed Routes – Scheduled bus routes connecting cities, medical centers, shopping destinations, and employment hubs.[2]
- Commuter Routes – Long-distance routes linking rural communities to larger metropolitan areas.
- Inter-county Services – Scheduled routes providing regional connectivity.[3]
Recent Service Changes
[edit]In 2025, Arrowhead Transit restructured its fare system, introducing a flat $5.00 fare for commuter routes. The organization also introduced technology upgrades, including an improved customer service system and a forthcoming mobile app for trip booking and fare payments.
