Arlind Qori (born Arlind Muhamet Qori on 11 November 1981) is an Albanian politician, activist and university lecturer.[4][5] Qori currently serves as the leader and founder of Lëvizja Bashkë (lit.'Together Movement'),[1][6] a left-wing political party based in Albania and works as a professor of political science at the University of Tirana.[2][7]

Political career

[edit]

Qori began his political career with his involvement in Organizata Politike, the predecessor to Lëvizja Bashkë.[8] Organizata Politike was a group of left-wing activists founded by Qori and other activists in 2011 as a result of the 21 January events, where 4 protesters were shot dead and 150 were left wounded,[4][9] as well as general dissatisfaction with the state of politics in Albania and the absence of a genuine left-wing political force.[10]

[edit]

Qori with other activists of Organizata Politike have been active in Albanian politics ever since, supporting workers, students and citizens. They have helped students in Tirana set up a student union[11], as well as workers of different industries set up trade unions, such as chromium miners, petrol refinery workers, call-center workers and garment workers.[10] They have also ran campaigns for public transport, against the occupation of public spaces by skyscrapers and for a guaranteed minimum income.[12][13]

Lëvizja Bashkë (2023-present)

[edit]

On 18 December 2022, Organizata Politike was rebranded and its members founded a new political party, Lëvizja Bashkë (Together Movement),[14] with Qori as a founding member and subsequently voted as its leader.[15]

The new party took part in the 2023 Albanian local elections in the municipality of Tirana, with Qori as its frontrunner for the title of mayor of Tirana.[10][16] Qori and LB were also endorsed by Greek politician Yanis Varoufakis of DiEM25.[17] Lëvizja Bashkë managed to receive 13851 votes, or 4.77% of the popular vote in Tirana, ranking third overall in the municipality and earning them a seat on the municipal council which is currently held by LB party member Mirela Ruko.[18]

After the elections, Qori announced that they will run in the next parliamentary elections, as well as in the next local elections where they intend to run in the entire country.[19]

Personal life

[edit]

Qori is married and a father of two.[20] In his public life, he has affirmed his interest in sports, especially football, publicly declaring himself a fan of the Albanian football club Partizani.[21]
