Areen Masrour Barzani (Kurdish: ئارین بارزانی, Arabic: أرین بارزاني) is a Kurdish public figure and philanthropist. He is the eldest son of Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, and the grandson of Masoud Barzani, the former President of the Kurdistan Region and a key figure in Kurdish politics.[1]

Areen Barzani is associated with various initiatives focused on development, education, and philanthropy in the Kurdistan Region. His work emphasizes innovation and sustainable growth, contributing to regional progress.[2]

Career

Areen Barzani serves as the Head of the GCC Unit in the Prime Minister’s Office of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), where he facilitates collaboration, investment, and cultural exchange between the Kurdistan Region and Gulf nations.[3] His role focuses on strengthening regional partnerships and enhancing Kurdistan's international presence. In addition to his civilian duties, Barzani holds the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Kurdish Army, reflecting his involvement in the security and defense of the region.[4]

Barzani is also the Chairman of Visit Kurdistan, an organization dedicated to promoting the Kurdistan Region as a tourism destination. Under his leadership, Visit Kurdistan highlights the region’s historical landmarks, natural landscapes, and cultural heritage to attract international visitors and investors.[5]

Kurdistan Foundation

Areen Barzani is the founder of the Kurdistan Foundation, an organization focused on community development, sustainability, and cultural preservation in the Kurdistan Region.

The foundation operates through four main pillars: - **Skills and Capacity Building:** Providing training and education programs to enhance personal and professional development. - **Cultural Unity and Global Engagement:** Promoting Kurdish culture and heritage while fostering international connections. - **Employment and Economic Growth:** Supporting entrepreneurship and job creation to strengthen the local economy. - **Sustainability and Active Citizenship:** Advocating for environmental responsibility and civic engagement to ensure long-term regional development.[6]

Guinness World Record

In 2023, Areen Barzani, in collaboration with Visit Kurdistan, organized the largest simultaneous hiking event, earning a Guinness World Record.[7] The event took place on Safeen Mountain, a well-known natural landmark in the Kurdistan Region.

Early Life and Education

Areen Barzani completed his early education at the International School of Choueifat (SABIS) and later attended the American University of Kurdistan in Duhok, earning the highest GPA in Security and Strategic Studies. He then attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, receiving training in leadership, discipline, and strategic decision-making.[8]
