Andrzej (Andrew) Pohorille (May 14, 1949 – January 6, 2024) was a statistical and theoretical physicist, holding positions at the University of California and NASA.[1]
Early life
[edit]Born in Szczecin, Poland, he was the only child of Eugenia Gartenberg, a teacher, and Maksynilian Pohorille, a professor of economy at Main School of Planning and Statistics (SGPiS), now Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). His parents were the only members of their families to survive the Holocaust.
Education and career
[edit]Pohorille received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Warsaw, under David Shugar. Subsequent to his Ph.D. studies, he did postdoctoral work with Prof. Bernard Pullman at the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique in Paris. He emigrated to the United States in 1980, and settled in Menlo Park, CA. He was an Assistant Research Professor (1982-1986) and Associate Research Professor (1986-1992) at the University of California at Berkeley. Pohorille became an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Francisco in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1992, and maintained this position until his death. He was concurrently a NASA contractor-scientist, at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field near Mountain View, CA. In 1996 he was hired by NASA as a civil servant in the Exobiology Branch at Ames. He was one of the authors of the Astrobiology Roadmap, a foundational document in the establishment of the NASA Astrobiology Institute. He was the architect and first director of the NASA Center for Computational Astrobiology.[2]
Research and contributions
[edit]Pohorille’s primary interest was utilizing computational methods to help test hypotheses on the origins of cellular life.[3][4][5] The goal of these studies was to determine the basic functions that early cells had to possess in order to thrive and propagate in a primordial environment. He made use of computer simulations techniques to model the structure and dynamics of biomembranes, ion channel proteins, and other condensed phase systems.[6][7][8][9][10] In the context of this work, he also developed methods for calculating free energy profiles of complex molecular systems.[11][12][13] Other research efforts included theoretical modeling of genetic and metabolic networks,[14][15][16][17], cometary ices,[18] the hydrophobic effect, as well as designing instruments for microbiology experiments on small satellites and in the lunar environment.[19] His most recent interests were in developing new ways to organize scientific information.[20]
He served as the computational lead for astrobiology projects on three successive NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) teams, and as the computational lead for two Internal Scientist Funding Model (ISFM) teams. The first was on the origin of life on Earth and the second was on the detection of life on other planets.[21] His published scientific work consists of 147 peer-reviewed articles.[22]

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE
[edit]His public service activities were primarily concentrated around promoting the emerging interdisciplinary field of astrobiology. In particular, his efforts were concentrated on promoting modern, enlightened views on the origins and early evolution of life through public lectures, dialogue with open-minded religious communities and making his expertise available to both students and the public. He participated in the creation of both the first and the second Astrobiology Roadmap, had lectures on the origins of life for teachers in their continuing education program and taped Internet lectures on this subject. He advised the National Research Council Committee on the Origins of Life, chaired the Origin of Life Focus group, which consisted of nearly 150 researchers in the field. He organized workshops and conference sessions in the area of astrobiology and participated in a large "Encyclopedia of Astrobiology" project as a field editor for the origin of life. Most recently, He co-led NASA Center for Life Detection charged with developing scientific basis for the forthcoming missions and observational efforts to detect possible signs of life in the solar system and beyond.
