Alina Timofeeva, currently a Board Member for the British Computer Society, is a strategic advisor to C-suite of major financial services organisations to help them leverage Data, Technology and Innovation to realise their business ambitions in a safe and cost-effective way.
She is a multi-award-winning expert on digital transformation and innovation, focussing on the topics of cloud computing, data, and risk management, making her a sought-after speaker at large industry events.
She has previously worked as a Principal in Digital Practice for Oliver Wyman, a management consulting firm. Alina overcame poverty and limited opportunities, transforming from a girl with no parents, no money, and no prospects to a successful multi-award-winning businesswoman. Now she is a keen supporter of women and immigrants, empowering them through mentoring, talks, and podcasts, and sharing her key motto: failure is an opportunity to grow and take action.
She is well known for her TED talk ‘Fail but Never Give Up’ that has over 510,000 unique viewers, was translated into 23 languages and became the top 10 World's Most Watched TEDx talks released in Dec 2021. The talk shows how failing an exam for a fast food chain can lead to three university degrees, career success and becoming a role model for women in technology.
She spoke on the topics of Data and Technology on TV and at large industry events, such as World Economic Forum, London Tech Week, Money 20/20, Banking Transformation Summit, Cloud Europe Expo, Digital Transformation Expo, and universities, for example University of Oxford, London School of Economics, Imperial College London, SOAS University of London. [edit]Alina Timofeeva is an accomplished professional who currently serves on Board of British Computer Society. She has garnered multiple awards for her expertise in cloud, data and digital transformation. Despite facing setbacks and challenges, Alina’s determination and resilience have propelled her to success.
Raised in post-Soviet Russia, she defied societal expectations and pursued higher education, eventually earning degrees in Mathematics from Moscow State University, and Risk and Finance from London School of Economics.
Alina’s journey highlights the importance of perseverance and self-belief in overcoming obstacles. She is passionate about empowering others, particularly women in technology and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, and actively engages in mentorship and community support initiatives.
Education
[edit]Education-wise, Alina's accolades are impressive. After winning the Moscow State University Olympiad at the age of 14, she was accepted without exams into a prestige school specialising in mathematics. She won another Moscow Olympiad in Mathematics at 16 and was accepted to Moscow State University without any exams on full scholarship at 16, completing both Bachelors and Masters in Mathematics at Moscow State University. Later, she expanded her knowledge with a second Master's degree in Risk and Finance from the London School of Economics.
Career
[edit]Alina worked with leading consulting firms Oliver Wyman, KPMG, Accenture and PwC. Between 2018 and 2021 she had been promoted four times in under four years – a significant achievement in the male-dominated tech industry.
Now, as a Board Member for the British Computer Society, Alina is committed to aiding others facing similar challenges that she encountered, and her focus is very much on those starting at a disadvantage - often those from under-privileged backgrounds and immigrants. She actively engages in various initiatives aimed at mentoring and supporting disadvantaged individuals, recognizing the inherent unfairness in the system.
In addition to her professional endeavours, Alina is a LinkedIn Top Voice, a TEDx speaker and a sought-after speaker at industry events. She shares with her audience the latest insights and lessons learnt from the Data & Technology industry and is empowers those driving change to fail but never give up.
Her TEDx talk ‘Fail but Never Give Up’ became the top 10 World's Most Watched TEDx talks released in Dec 2021. In her grandmother’s eyes being a good housewife in post-Soviet Russia was the best thing that could ever happen to Alina. In her talk Alina shares her journey to where she is today and what she learned along the way – whether her grandmother approved it or not.
