The 284th Assault Squadron Royal Engineers, was a specialised tank battalion assigned to the 79th Armoured Division.
The squadron was part of the 6th Assault Regiment of the Royal Engineers (REME) and was known for there use of AVREs (Armored Vehicle Royal Engineers) or their nickname "Hobarts Funnies". AVREs were specialized Churchill tanks usually with a 3inch Petard Mortar on the front. The Regiment (being part of the 79th Armored Division) was often credited during the war as being a crucial element for British success in France, Holland and Germany.[1]
