Double jersey
Double jersey is a knit fabric produced with a double-bed circular knitting machine.[1][2] It has loops on both sides. Therefore it is thicker and stable than a single jersey.[3] It is also known as double fabric. It is easy to sew with as it hardly gets rolled up.[4] The fabric is used for a variety of clothing due to its reversibility and double-sided construction. The fabric is used for a variety of purposes.[5]
Structure
[edit]Double Jersey fabric is an interlocked design fabric. It is easy to work with as the material is heavy. The fabric is stretchy quality. The double jersey fabric is an interlocked jersey featuring two sheets of jersey fabric attached to the piled sides.[6] The fabric has resulted in its smooth and flat sides. The fabric is insulative and durable.[7]
Knitting Patterns
[edit]Double jersey fabric has a double knitting pattern. The pattern requires two different sets of needles to create a fabric. This is the reason the fabric is twice in thickness as ordinary knitting fabric. Two layers of knitting come closer because there is the use of stitches interlocking with one another. Needles used in the construction of fabric result in loops. These loops get formed on each side of the fabric. Loops are woven together in the making of a single structure.[8]
Material
[edit]Double jerseys are made of several types of materials. They are made of both natural and synthetic fibers. For instance, cotton, polyester, nylon, and even blends of fiber. Cotton blend fabric has elasticity and durability to wear. The fabric is soft to the touch. It is comfortable to wear as the main ingredient of the fabric is cotton. Synthetic fibers also provide the stretchiness to the fabric. It offers properties- moisture-wicking, air permeability, and other capabilities of quick drying. The fabric is an excellent choice to use in children’s clothing, yoga, and exercise clothing, and loungewear.[9]
Construction
[edit]A double jersey is an interlocked fabric with two layers of the jersey.[10] The fabric has two layers of fabric that are interwoven together.[11] The fabric is smooth on each side. There are back loops that are interlinked with the wales of alternated fabric. Therefore it tend to be firmer and more stable.[12] The fabric has good air permeability and extension. The double jersey, known as interlock, or even rib knit, depends on the loop arrangement. The fabric shrinks less because the loops are balanced. The loops are interlocked on both sides.[13] The machines used for the fabric are the V bed and cylinder-dial.[14] The material has two needle beds and a ribbing bed. The fabric has needles of the same size that make knitting vertically and horizontally. The needles allow for double stitching which makes the fabric double-sided. [15]
Features
[edit]Double jersey fabric is thicker. The grammage of the double jersey is between 150 and 200.[16] It is not prone to curling. Instead, the fabric is considered balanced as both parts are the same thickness. This feature allows double jerseys to lie flat. There is no such build-up on each side of the fabric. The fabric is less stretchy and more resource-sensitive. More yarn is required to knit with the two-needle set.[6]
- Reversible: Double jersey is reversible, meaning it can be double-face or double-reverse. [17]
- Durable: Double jersey is more durable and insulative than single jersey because it's twice as thick.
- Firm: Double jersey is firmer and more stable than other knits. [18][19]
- Drapes well: Double jersey drapes are better than single jersey drapes because of their two layers.[20]
Double jersey fabric hardly shows a curling tendency. Two sets of needles are used that offer a similar appearance in the face and back part.[21] Due to the balanced structure, the fabric has twice the extensibility of a single jersey. [22]
Double jersey fabric types
[edit]One of the types of double jersey fabric is Ponte Roma. Ponte Roma is a fabric that is strong and shape-holding.[23] It is a double jersey constructed. It is a looped textile design. It has a firm and strong knit. Besides, the fabric holds its shape as it is great for covering lumps on the fabric. The fabric comes in different weights and yarn types. [24]
A rib double jersey is another type. It features a vertical cord appearance.[25] The face loop wales move over as well as in front of the reverse loop wales. A circular knitting machine is used to produce 1x1 rib using two sets of needles from the double jersey fabric.[26] Rib fabric is expensive in terms of production. It has a heavy structure. [27]
Application
[edit]Double jersey fabric has its uses in heavy-wear dresses.[28] Some wearing heavy dresses are jackets, high-end T-shirts, layette items, and hoodies. The fabric is used for clothing, gym clothing, and yoga wear. The objective is the moisture-wicking capabilities. Choosing the synthetic double knit allows the stretching and air permeability. These two features make the fabric comfortable to wear during the movement. In the cold weather, double jerseys offer comfort and warmth. It is soft to the touch and heavy. During cold weather conditions, the fabric is used for jackets, thermal underwear, tops, and other general clothing. [29]
