In January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed the displacement[1] of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries, suggesting a plan to "just clean out" the territory.[2] He advocated for relocating Gaza's residents to nations such as Egypt and Jordan. Legal experts, human rights organizations, and Middle Eastern countries condemned the proposal, emphasizing the need to uphold international law and protect the rights of the Palestinian people.[3][4][5]
Background
[edit]In January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed the relocation of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries, suggesting a plan to "just clean out" the territory. He advocated relocating Gaza's residents to nations such as Egypt and Jordan, asserting that this would allow them to live in safer and more comfortable areas. Trump stated, "I’d like to get them living in an area where they can live without disruption and revolution and violence so much."[3][4]
International response
[edit]The proposal was met with widespread condemnation from various international actors. Legal experts and human rights organizations labeled the plan as a form of ethnic cleansing.[3] Countries in the Middle East expressed opposition. Jordan's Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, stated that his country's rejection of any displacement of Palestinians was "firm and unwavering."[3][4]
France and Germany called it “unacceptable”, while Spain said that “Gazans need to stay in Gaza”.[6]
Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said "the facilitation of these plans would also violate the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to stay on their land and in their homeland, a right which is protected by international law, and would be crimes against humanity and war crimes".[7]
The Iranian foreign minister counter-proposed that Israelis be expelled to Greenland.[8]
