Deep Research is an artificial intelligence system integrated into ChatGPT,[1] which generates cited reports on a user-specified topic by autonomously browsing the web for 5 to 30 minutes.[2] It can interpret and analyze text, images and PDFs, and will soon be capable of producing visualizations and embedding images in its reports.[3] It is based on a specialized version of OpenAI's o3 model.[3]
Deep Research scored 26.6% on the "Humanity's Last Exam" benchmark, surpassing rivals like DeepSeek's model R1 (9.4%) and GPT-4o (3.3%).[4]
According to OpenAI, Deep Research sometimes makes factual hallucinations or incorrect inferences,[3] can have difficulty distinguishing authoritative sources from rumors,[5] and may not accurately convey uncertainty.[6]
Deep Research is currently offered to ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month), who receive 100 queries per month. OpenAI plans to expand this to Plus, Team and Enterprise users.[6] At the time of release, Deep Research was not offered to the UK or Europe.[7]
