Chelsea Odosamamwen Ode (born 29 December 2003), known professionally as Ceechynaa, is an English rapper. Her single "Last Laugh" became popular online in 2023 and her follow-up 2024 single, "Peggy", became her first UK Singles Chart entry. Her UK drill songs are known for her use of her Essex accent and for their sexually dominant lyrics, which often take aim at men and gender roles.
Career
[edit]Chelsea Odosamamwen Ode[1] was born on 29 December 2003 in South London to Nigerian parents.[2][3][4] She first began writing music at age 14 after attending a studio session with friends, where she was encouraged by the producer there to pursue music. At age 15, she gave a speech on beauty standards, during which she took off her false eyelashes and wig to show the "real" her. Videos of the speech later went viral online. Prior to starting her rap career, she worked as a waitress and worked in the sex industry under the name Chyna's Milkies soon after turning 18 years old. She also attended university until dropping out to focus on her music career.[2]
Ode independently released her debut single as Ceechynaa, "Legal Baby", in 2022.[5] Her follow-up single, "Last Laugh", was released in July 2023 and went viral online, including on TikTok.[6] The associated music video for "Last Laugh" featured her walking through Leicester Square and brought the song to further popularity, while a remix of the song featuring NLE Choppa was released in January the following year.[7][8] She also performed with Tion Wayne at Reading Festival and appeared on the cover of Dazed in 2023.[2][9] She took a break from music the following year until releasing the single "Peggy" in December 2024. It became her first entry on the UK Singles Chart, debuting at number 79, while a verse from the song became popular online.[10] As of 2024[update], she is based in Essex.[11]
Musical style
[edit]Ceechynaa's music is primarily UK drill.[11] She raps with an Essex accent, which Hits described as her trademark.[12][5] She has cited Nicki Minaj and witch house music as musical inspirations for her. She has stated that her lyrics are "about things that make women feel in control" such as financial domination and are intended to push back against societal gender roles. Daniel Rodgers of British Vogue wrote that Ceechynaa's songs were "designed with the specific intention of intimidating the sort of men who perceive feminism to be harmful" while The Guardian's Ben Beaumont-Thomas wrote that her songs exhibited an "audible contempt" for men.[2][13]
For The Fader, Raphael Helfand described Ceechynaa as a "challenger to rap's toxic gender norms".[8] DJ Semtex called her music "uncompromising"; Miki Hellerbach, for Revolt, wrote that her music was "cheekily funny", "assertive", and "dominating"; and NME's Alex Rigotti called her musical style "bold" and "fearless" and compared it to that of Ivorian Doll and Shaybo.[14][7][12] Notion wrote that she had a "confident cadence" and "sharp wordplay" while Kyle Denis wrote in Billboard that "few go as far as Ceechynaa" in regard to "proudly waving the sexual liberation flag".[15][16]
