Akíntúndé Ọlọ́runwà Babátúndé is a Nigerian journalist and media development expert. He is a development analyst and correspondent with Premium Times Nigeria; and the Director of Programs at the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID); at Dubawa, a West African fact-checking project; and for UDEME, a social accountability platform for tracking government expenditure in Nigeria. Babatunde’s interests are in the area of environmental and climate journalism, media innovation, media for reform, artificial intelligence in media practice, fact-checking, and capacity building for media practitioners.[1][2][3]
Education and career
[edit]Babatunde received a bachelor of education degree in Educational Management and Mathematics at the University of Ibadan in 2016. In 2020, he earned a master of arts in Media Practice for Development and Social Change from the University of Sussex as a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship.[4][5] He is currently a Ph.D. student in Media and Communication at the University of Iowa.[6]
Babatunde is participating in the 2025 Media Transformation Challenge Fellowship at the Poynter Institute.[7][8] He was a 2022 Mandela Washington Fellow in the Leadership in Civic Engagement track at the Presidential Precinct, Charlottesville, Virginia.[3][9][10] In 2019, Babatunde was the selected to serve as an African Ambassador on the UNESCO-supported Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy.[11][12] He was a former Anglophone Africa Regional Coordinator for the Centre for Investigative Journalism’s Open Climate Reporting Initiative.[13] He was shortlisted for Africa Check's 2018 Africa Fact-Checker of the Year Award.[14]
Through CJID and Dubawa, Babatunde has led scores of media development and innovation projects funded by donors and technology companies such as the MacArthur Foundation, Gates Foundation, Open Society Foundation,Google, Meta and Tiktok.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21]
