- ^ Gardiner was a sitting Councillor representing the St Mary's ward. She replaced Cllr. Amanda Linton after her resignation in 1996[4]
- ^ Keating replaced Cllr. Eric A. Commons after his resignation in 1994[4]
- ^ Wakefield replaced Cllr. John P. Ryan after his resignation in 1995. Wakefield was elected as a Labour councillor but since then was not selected to represent Labour in this election[4]
- ^ Rahman was a sitting councillor representing the Spitalfields ward
- ^ Keith replaced Cllr.Lilley Albert after her death in 1994[4]
- ^ Uddin was a sitting councillor representing the St Peter's ward
- ^ Ali replaced Cllr. Vanessa L. Peters after her resignation in 1995[4]
