[edit]

Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition article sources archive.org (Image of p.626). Maybe add;

  • B: Book sources in: Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition.
  • S: Books referred to in: Alexander Schölch (1993): Palestine in Transformation, 1856-1882.

Palestine (region) = Historical Land of Israel

[edit]

User:Huldra, as is well-known, the country known as "Palestine" (region) is the same country often termed the Historical "Land of Israel" as used in classical Hebrew sources, and has nothing to do with the modern state of Israel. The books mentioned here are exclusive in that they refer to sites in the above country.Davidbena (talk) 19:54, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is a WikiProject Israel; I suggest you start a relevant page over there, cheers, Huldra (talk) 20:17, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Huldra:, That would be great if the WikiProject Israel was about books. Since its scope is not limited to books as this one WikiProject is, and since "Palestine (region)" is the same as the historical "Land of Israel", this then is the proper channel for that broader designation. Can you agree, Huldra? There is no need to politicize the issue, since the relative material is mostly historical geography.Davidbena (talk) 21:24, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, WikiProject Palestine isn't only about books; you are free to create a similar sub-section at WikiProject Israel (as was done here.) This page was actually started by me on one of my sub-pages, an editor named Ian Pitchford was then WP:BOLD and moved it here in 2009. When I started it, it was as a collection of sources fully available on the net, via archive.com, project Gutenberg, books.google.com, etc, etc. I would assume there are a lot of sources that would be relevant on WikiProject Israel, but not for WikiProject Palestine: say, all sources about Judaism, etc. Huldra (talk) 21:34, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are to be commended for starting this page. But a cursory review of the sources will reveal that 98% of all entries here revolve around sites in Palestine (aka the Land of Israel) and around visits paid to these sites by travelers, all, mind you, before the political state envisioned later by ideologists. These are mostly pure geographical sites and the itineraries of visitors / travelers to these sites. The sources are used by archaeologists here in our country. Strangely, when I first saw this page, I was misled by the title, as I thought that it was mostly about the envisioned political state. When I saw that it is mostly of a historical / geographical nature, it prompted me to think that others can easily be misled by its title, just as I was. This can be rectified by adding in parentheses or after a slash, "the Historical Land of Israel." The title "Land of Israel," mind you, is used frequently in Hebrew classical literature, such as in the Talmud and in Midrash Rabba, etc. Books about "Judaism" are different from books about "historical geography," as this page is about the latter. Well, the " Land of Israel"-label is a very Israeli way of seeing it. Virtually all international scholars calls it Palestine. And, as I said: it was started as a way of collecting "free sources"; (ie no copy-right), so of course most of it is pre-1948. If you insist on putting "the Historical Land of Israel", then you are politicizing it, Huldra (talk) 21:57, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, I don't think we will agree here, but please don't introduce the "land of Israel"-label again (unless you want to risk ending up at AE), cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:04, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
How can it be politicizing it when the name "Land of Israel" is used non-politically in the Talmud and Midrash Rabba? Just to show you one example, one out of hundreds, you may wish to see the use of this appellation in the Mishnah (compiled in 189 CE), as shown here (Kelim 1:6) in this translation. In my humble opinion, the use of, both, "Palestine (region)" and "Historical Land of Israel" - the broader designation - is the best way to divorce ourselves from any political intentions. As you are very well aware, my work here on Wikipedia has much to do with the historical geography of Palestine/Israel, and so it is only natural that we seek to clarify the title and alleviate misconceptions that can arise, seeing that the source material (literature) contained in this WikiProject is extremely useful, and where others (unaware of its existence) may wish to have access to the same. Would you agree that we seek a larger consensus on this matter, say, a Request for Comment? I will agree, in this case, to wherever the consensus lists.--Davidbena (talk) 23:23, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
