Message to parties

[edit]

Some parties have contact forms on their website. I've been in touch with the ACT Party and this is what I sent them:

Kia ora koutou, I'm writing to you on behalf of the politics task force at Wikipedia New Zealand. Here's the deal: make photos of your list candidates available to us and we'll use them on Wikipedia pages, e.g. http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Party_lists_in_the_2023_New_Zealand_general_election

Please see this page for details: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand/politics/2023_list_candidate_photos

Schwede66 10:16, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And the auto-reply had a long list of contact details, including the following line: "For ACT Party business, such as membership, donations, and campaigning: danae.smith@act.org.nz" I shall thus send an email to Danae Smith with the above line; the original email was addressed to David Seymour (it offered a dropdown list of their current MPs). Schwede66 10:22, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For the Green Party, I've written to Robin Campbell; he is their Chief of Staff and I believe that's the right person to deal with the request. Schwede66 20:05, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think the general secretary of political parties is their legal head, so maybe they would be best to contact? There details are here if interested. Kiwichris (talk) 02:04, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! Thanks, Kiwichris. Schwede66 02:29, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update:

  • I've heard back from ACT; they are willing to make a set available.
  • I've written to Labour and Rob Salmond is still the relevant contact. He made the call last time to make the photos available so the message to him was customised.
  • I'll write the the remaining parties tonight or whenever I get round to it (thanks, Kiwichris, for digging out the contact details).

I think it would be good to get support from DrThneed to get the list candidates into Wikidata. Well, at least ACT at this point, given that their photos will be forthcoming. Schwede66 06:00, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

All sent:

Hi @Schwede66 Yes happy to put people into Wikidata again. Last time I waited until all the party lists were confirmed, and put every candidate in (so as not to be showing bias). I was using a list released by the Electoral Commission, as I recall. Looks like that's due for release 16 September, is that soon enough for you? Hopefully there'll be a reasonable amount of overlap with the last election so not quite such big job this time. DrThneed (talk) 06:47, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the swift response, DrThneed. I suppose mid September is early enough in most cases but those where we have photos. Lets not hurry this along, though, because some party functionary saying "yes, we are in" and it actually happening might be two different things. Once the deal is sealed, we should move onto that party's candidate set, I suggest. Schwede66 07:07, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I'm happy to make items for people to match photos at the point we need them, and then go back and add all the formal stuff about which electorate they're in or their place on the list later on, when those details come out from the EC. (I just want to avoid making any items for people who don't have photos and then don't end up on the final list for some reason). Although it'll all have to wait until after Wikimania anyway... DrThneed (talk) 07:12, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DrThneed, I trust you had a brilliant time at Wikimania. I can report that the Labour photos have been uploaded and added to the list. Schwede66 11:03, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant! I'll take a look over the next couple of days and ensure all are linked to a Wikidata item with SDC, and update images in Wd items. (and yes, thanks, had an excellent time at Wikimania, but still recovering!!!). DrThneed (talk) 20:59, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I've made sure they all have Wikidata items, and added a "depicts" statement to the images on Commons so they link to the Wikidata item. And I've added the images to the Wikidata items. I haven't added statements about candidacy and electorates and so on to Wikidata items yet as I will wait for the Electoral Commission list next month. Anything else you need doing with these items right now? DrThneed (talk) 01:54, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's perfect! Thanks for that, DrThneed. Schwede66 07:46, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Labour is in and will provide photos once more! Schwede66 05:47, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Schwede66 -- I'm starting some new biographies for the likely new MPs (focusing on the Greens at this point). I was in the process of writing an email to their secretary for infobox photos of the candidates when I found the open letter. Has there been any movement on this from any of the parties since Labour showed interest at the start of the month? Or should I hit "send" on my email to the Greens? MrSeabody (talk) 02:45, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kia ora, Mr Seabody! Well, if you had email enabled on your user account, I could forward the email to you that I sent to the Green Party. (enabling your email is a good idea, I suggest) If you want to send me a Wikimail, please do so and I can then reply with what went to Robin Campbell at the Greens.
That email went out before Kiwichris posted the link to the party secretaries (see above). According to that list, the email should have gone to Miriam Ross. I haven't followed up with her. Anyway, if I get your email, I will send you what went to Robin, and you can then follow up with Miriam, with a copy to Robin and me, if you wish.
With regards to progress, no uploading has happened yet. I'll follow up with my Labour and ACT contacts.
With regards to politician bios, I hope you are aware of our process of creating draft bios on this page. It's not the done thing of creating bios of political candidates in project space just prior to an election. Those bios have a very high likelihood of getting deleted as any new bio can have a whiff of promotion to it. Please do join us working on draft pages. Schwede66 03:54, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kia ora Schwede -- should be set up now.
I've been working on an article on Scott Willis in that wikispace, not in mainspace for that reason. For the reason you mention also, (and because I am a GP member, though not involved in any campaign/governance, and am not editing anyone I have connections to -- have added COIs to my userpage) and because it would be my first created article, I was planning on asking someone to review it on the project talk page once created. MrSeabody (talk) 04:32, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! Email is on its way. Schwede66 04:51, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Labour photos

[edit]
Ala' Al-Bustanji

Anyone got time to bulk-upload the Labour Party photos? They are on a Google Drive and the party president has sent an email with the relevant permission to the team at Commons. For good measure, I've uploaded one of those files manually. There are tools available for mass uploads, e.g. Pattypan; ideally someone who wants to take on the task uses one of those tools already. Schwede66 11:32, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It seems one of the volunteers from Commons is onto it. Ka pai! Schwede66 20:52, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All done! Schwede66 11:51, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome work everyone involved! Hopefully other parties will follow suit. Kiwichris (talk) 06:39, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Green Party photos

[edit]

The Green Party photos have arrived and I've uploaded them. They have 30 candidates and have made 21 photos available. They say: This Google Drive folder should contain all photos of our current list-ranked candidates that we know we have authority to license and are approved by our candidates. A few are missing - if we do get permission to license those from the photographers/candidates, we'll upload them to the same folder and notify you. I've had a look at the nine missing candidate photos. We have photos for these candidates already:

  • Chlöe Swarbrick
  • Julie Anne Genter
  • Golriz Ghahraman
  • Hūhana Lyndon
  • Darleen Tana

We are missing photos for:

  • Benjamin Doyle (18 on the list)
  • Stephanie Rodgers (20)
  • Rochelle Francis (28)
  • Kair Lippiatt (30)

I'd say that 26 out of 30 28 photos is "complete enough" for us to use the photos at this point, but don't want to make a call on that all by myself. The other consideration is that the highest-ranked candidate without a photo is so far down the list that electoral success is unlikely. What do others say? Schwede66 03:25, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

They've made a good faith effort to supply all the photos they can. I think we should use them.-gadfium 03:49, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great to see that a second party has joined this initiative this election. I would suggest making cropped versions of the supplied photos so they will fit in the table properly. Kiwichris (talk) 06:39, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Crop tool (or, it seems, everything hosted on toolforge) was down yesterday but is running again. DrThneed, a Wikidata run would be helpful (also for National; see below). Schwede66 19:09, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great! This is going really well this year @Schwede66! Will get onto these and National this weekend (today, if BandQuest duties permit). DrThneed (talk) 20:25, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
NB Just noting that Kair Lippiatt isn't on the Greens website list anymore, possibly dropped? DrThneed (talk) 00:10, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's a surprise. Lippiatt is in "my" electorate but wasn't picked as the electorate candidate. Hadn't heard that she's withdrawn. Rochelle Francis is also no longer on the Green Party website. Schwede66 01:25, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've added photos of Green candidates to Party lists in the 2023 New Zealand general election. I didn't find the photo of Darleen Tana mentioned above.-gadfium 00:15, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've added it. I knew that it exists because I took that photo the other week :-). Darleen Tana (Q99767998) Thanks for dealing with the rest, Gadfium. Schwede66 01:26, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

National photos

[edit]

Their photo set has been made available. The VRT team is working through the licensing process with them and they will also do the bulk upload. This is going well this year! Schwede66 19:12, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Have done the Greens. Are we cropping National photos? If we are, I'll wait until that's done before I match to Wikidata, as filenames will change. DrThneed (talk) 22:05, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see there's an issue with the Nats licensing. I'll wait for that to be sorted. DrThneed (talk) 00:09, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the email comms that I had with the Nats were a bit "loose". Let's see what comes out of it. Schwede66 01:27, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The National photos have now been deleted from commons for not having proper licensing :( Kiwichris (talk) 04:44, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh. DrThneed (talk) 05:38, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just hot air. Nothing tangible to show for it. I hope that in real life, things work out better than that. Schwede66 08:10, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Why can't the NZ parliament do what the UK parliament does and have all their MP's portraits under a CC license? Example. It would be so, so much easier than having to scurry to each party. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 11:17, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pakoire, next time you talk to Parliamentary Services, could you please bring that up? Schwede66 13:58, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It would have to include them taking some half-decent photos aswell. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 16:42, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ka pai - and thanks for including the example link Kiwiz1338 Pakoire (talk) 02:13, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 03:54, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

November 2023 update

[edit]

Now that the election is over, I've followed up with ACT and National to see whether they have the mental capacity to deal with this. ACT got back to me with questions. I'll keep you posted if anything else happens. Schwede66 22:28, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The National Party is dealing with the permissions right now. Schwede66 23:34, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
National Party photos have dropped: c:Category:National Party candidates for 2023 New Zealand general election Schwede66 17:41, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, good stuff! Kiwichris (talk) 11:52, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
