Potential Sub-task that might be useful?
I wonder if it would be useful to have (if such a thing is possible) a count of how many pages there currently are in Category:Pages needing expert attention. Once we get going it should help to give us a feel for how we're getting on, but more immediately, it may give us some idea of how many categories to aim for and how broad they should be. --JennyRad 10:31, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, that would be useful. I'm not sure how the stub sorting people do it, whether it is automated or not. I will have a look later. But I'm quite busy now. Will try to get something on Monday maybe.--Konstable 02:11, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Do not create a flurry of new templates
Ideally, it w€ould be much to allow {{expert}} to add the appropriate field by mean of optional parameters. Circeus 02:23, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Pages needing attention autosorting
Gentlemen, are you aware of the current project under WP:PNA to acheive a similar goal? For the last couple of months, we have organized at Wikipedia:Cleanup process/Cleanup sorting proposal to enable Pearle to autosort expert attention articles by topic. We piggyback on other sorting methods ( stub sorting, categories, portals, etc. ) so as to make our job easier and avoid duplication of work.
Please take a look at our work, especially the PNA subpages and transclusions, and see if it doesn't already meet the goals of this WikiProject. If it does, we'd be delighted if you'd merge with us. If not, please co-ordinate with us so things like a change in the expert template don't mess up our efforts.

- I think what Epolk proposed on tying the expert requests to given portals rather than subjects is a pretty useful idea (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Expert_Request_Sorting/Categories). The portals would already have interested users who are knowledgeable on the topics, so it would mean that these articles would be much more accessible then being categorized in some less-known location. I haven't heard of Pearle before, maybe the bot would be useful to us also? Or maybe we could combine efforts on the expert-request part of your project.--Konstable 04:17, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Another attemp to simplify expert request
I also think that requestion experts' advice should became easier. As far as I see you try to achieve this by making it easier for experts to find requests. Project directory
Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. New expert portal templates
Thanks Brad Beattie for creating the new portal sorting templates. I think it will be helpful to in getting expert help on these topics.
I have one question about the templates. Is it possible to add an option to include an alpha sort item to the template? This is especially useful for the People portal so we can sort by last name instead of by first name.

- Yeah, it should be possible to do. Unfortunately, my conditional parameter wiki syntax isn't up to par for that task. But it should be doable. For now, let's just take care of the backlog. We can certainly look into that at a later point in time. I think the most important step at the moment is to get these articles into the hands of the experts that can do the most good with them.
- On that note, we should probably notify the portals and wikiprojects about the categories that relate to them, yeah? Wikipedia:WikiProject Technology and Portal:Technology should probably be notified about

Creating category pages
I don't think we need to create category pages for each possible parameter. All we really need to do is watch Special:Wantedcategories to see if any of our expert requests are fairly popular. If they are, we can create the actual page and link it up. Besides, the categories still function even if they aren't created. --Brad Beattie (talk) 18:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Making progress

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. List of available tag parameters
I'm having trouble making headway, because I can't find a list of allowable "WikiProject or Portal name" tag parameters to enter in {{expert-subject}}. Is there a way to find this list, or can it be generated? Dhaluza 11:39, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Any project name will do. Look at Wikipedia:WikiProject for a list of projects. For example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Science shows Space, Microbiology, and Tree of Life as valid parameters. Does that clarify? --Brad Beattie (talk) 17:34, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- I understand this, I was hoping it was possible to see all the valid choices at once. Having to navigate through the tree to find one for each article is very tedious. And the branches overlap somewhat, so you may need to check several to find the right one. I'm sure after you have been doing it for a while, it is second nature, but it is very daunting for a newcomer. If there is no pre-existing list, is it possible to write some simple code to generate one? Dhaluza 01:20, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hrm. I dunno, the sub-pages of Wikipedia:WikiProject pretty much are the lists you're looking for. If you want to make a list for yourself, go nuts. Also, there's no need to find an exact match; You can just sort them into one of these three: Culture, Science and Society. - This doesn't work. The video game wikiproject is WikiProject Video games, but putting "video games" in the current categorization results in a badly named category Category:Pages needing expert attention from Video games experts. I would like to propose that {{expert-subject}} take 2 parameters, {{expert-subject|category|wikiproject}}
. This will work out better as proper categorization does not always match the WikiProject's name.

Old Expert tags
I'm seeing expert tags placed on articles a year or more ago that apparently none of the multitude of editors in the meantime had the credentials or arrogance to delete. What are you trying to accomplish with expert tags? Wikipedia content is already supposed to be from notable, verifiable sources. I realize that experts are more likely to know notable and verifiable sources, but if Joe Schmoe adds content from a good source, why does the expert tag linger? There's been an expert tag on Rate of return since April 2006 -- a year ago. I've worked on that article during the past year. I don't consider myself an expert, so I haven't deleted the tag. Neither has anyone else who's edited that article. I've changed the tag to request a Finance expert, but I hesitated in doing this because I've seen too many Wikipedia articles that are no doubt technically correct and written by an expert -- but are completely incomprehensible to an uninformed reader. Is there any way you can delete expert tags that persist after, say, 20 edits or 6 months? SueHay 03:14, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

After the CfD result, I've changed the syntax for {{expert-subject}}. Going on, I've moved many of the categories to the new name. However, I'm sure I've missed some, and the category hierarchy for Category:Pages needing expert attention and below has gotten a bit out of whack. Notice with suggestion
- Created Category:Archaeology articles needing expert attention with notification on that projects talk page.
- Since first seeing the
{{expert-subject}}
template, I've been trying to use it, but submit would be a good add and aid to such like me trying to do the right thing, to have this project mentioned in the various expert tags, along with resources along the lines of guidance presented by the wikipedia stub-sorting project. - Specifically, IMHO, would be BEST if you had a project page section or sub-page auto linked which alphabetically lists projects you are currently sorting. As a section, suggest a in a two column format. Three column wrapping in the category is awfully hard to sort through quickly by eye with the anomalies in the wrapping. That can of course be a subpage with a single column (considering length of the text, this may be best).

Am I blind? Every time I look at expert-verify it says deprecated in favour of expert-subject, which has a link here, but where is the list of subjects from which to choose? For maximal utility, make this list prominent at expert-verify. MaxEnt 02:27, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Miscellaneous articles
These are now categorised in Category:Miscellaneous articles needing expert attention until their sub-categories are created. This is automatic, there is no need to change and template parameters: if the specialist cat does not exist it will be catted there. Similarly when and if the new cat is created it will move across (although it may take a little while for MediaWiki to migrate it). Rich Farmbrough, 21:12 15 March 2008 (GMT).
Category:Statistics articles needing expert attention does not show on the page Category:WikiProject Statistics
Category:WikiProject Statistics is shown in the list of categories at the bottom of Category:Statistics articles needing expert attention, but Category:Statistics articles needing expert attention is not on the list of categories at Category:WikiProject Statistics. I realise that Category:Statistics articles needing expert attention is a hidden cat, but shouldn't it show on the list of cats of which it's a member? Regards—G716 <T·C> 14:04, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Courtesy note on upgrade
I've upgraded {{technical (expert)}} to make use of the same sub-categorization scheme as {{expert-subject}}. You may also be interested in a discussion about Wikimedia software "intersection categories", which could address this issue, and and many similar ones (deletion sorting, FA/GA (re)nominations etc.) in a uniform manner. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively.
