Fold3 issues

Is anyone having troubles accessing certain records on Fold3 (eg [1])? I've tried different browsers and incognito mode, but no luck. Connormah (talk) 15:34, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

At least using the link you've provided, I load up a grey screen. No errors, but no content. -- Zanimum (talk) 12:07, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
Thank you - it seems to be an issue isolated to this particular record set/collection. Connormah (talk) 15:26, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Hathi Trust

We really need institutional accounts with them. They've digitized a large number of books and other resources, but will not provide access to any that are still within the copyright period, except to libraries, schools, etc. that have accounts with them. This is intensely frustrating, since they have have books that Google has scanned (for no apparent reason) but will provide no access to at all not even snippet view, and which Internet Archive does not have at all. Repeatedly now, I have had to outright buy books (due to the near-total demise of inter-library loan in the US except within the same state) that I need for, say, 5 minutes to verify one thing. (Note: As a "GFYs" to the publishers and coalitions thereof filing these lawsuits against Internet Archive, I only buy said books used, so the publishers get nothing. I make exception for niche publishers who are uninvolved in these anti-fair-use legal shenanigans.)  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  15:01, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi Sam, hate to bug you on an unrelated matter but I was wondering if you can shed light onthe issue I raised above re accessing Haaretz from the Library ? I can't seem to do so and I have to assume I am not the only one. I posted that a while back to no avail. Coretheapple (talk) 14:14, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

I'm getting an error from springerLink:

  1. I log in, it appears successful, and so does a search starting from the url http://link-springer-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/
  2. When I click on a content item that I want to access (in this case, at http://link-springer-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-41463-3_9 ), it isn't displayed and I get the following error:

"Page Not Found... Not logged in - 132.174.252.114 The Wikipedia Library Wikimedia Foundation (3004182381)"

Usually if the library logs you out it prompts for a re-log in, but this is happening a few minutes after the initial log in with no prompt to enter credentials again.

Hmm. I'm seeing similar issues, including occasionally getting "We’re sorry, something doesn't seem to be working properly. Please try refreshing the page. If that doesn't work, please contact support so we can address the problem." messages everywhere. Downloading PDFs does seem to work between these errors (e.g. at http://link-springer-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article/10.1007/s12207-023-09495-z). The 'Not Found' error seems to particularly be present on book chapter pages. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 06:05, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello ExclusiveEditor! I'm experiencing the exact same problem, with same error message as you. I've done some searching, which also turned this post up, & seen an old report of this same issue in the past. Seems like some kind of glitch at their end, I'm hoping it will be resolved soon. Hello AstonishingTunesAdmirer & others interested! Thanks for the the Phabricator link! I've now checked the multiple browsers I have installed; the latest version of Firefox (which is my normal browser) produces the error when trying to search the Wikipedia Library, Edge browser reacts the same as does Opera browser. However the ancient Waterfox Classic does not produce the error & works as normal! So seems like something has gotten broken with newer browsers very recently. Hope this is of help in someone solving the problem! LooksGreatInATurtleNeck (talk) 08:40, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Haaretz English

I can't seem to access Haaretz English articles when accessing through the library. Apparently there's the same problem with the Hebrew site too via the library. Am I doing something wrong or is our access limited? I do seem to be able to see daily updates, but I believe the general public can as well by just going to the regular Haaretz site. Coretheapple (talk) 14:28, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Just to be a bit more specific: when I use the Wikilibrary link for Haaretz English, I am indeed able to obtain access to Haaretz English. However, I find that this does not give me full access to the articles on the site in most instances.

For instance. Going to the site through the library I can get full access to the article titled "Dancers Fleeing Fake Gunfire at Hamas' Nova Massacre Site? On the Set of Israel's Independence Day Music Video." Going to that through the public website I can only see an excerpt. In this instance the Wikipedia Library site is providing full access. That however is not usually the case.

For instance, if I try to access via the library "Analysis | Two Assassinations, Same Problem: Israel Didn't Think About the Consequences" I get the same limited excerpt I do through the regular public website. That is true for the vast majority of articles I attempt to access via the Wikipedia Library.

Is this a bug or is this simply Haaretz limiting access? Anyone know? Coretheapple (talk) 14:44, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Clicking on the Wikipedia Library link for the English Haaretz, the lead headline is "Report: Hamas Accepts Gaza Cease-fire Deal; Israeli Officials Reject Prospect of War Ending." But when you click on the article, you cannot access more than the first few paragraphs. Coretheapple (talk) 14:47, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

I have the same problem using Haaretz English. But this does not seem to occur on Haaretz Hebrew, where I have been able to open every article I tried. That would suggest that the problem is technical, ratgher than a deliberate decision. For instance, I can read only the first few lines of the article By Shutting Down Al Jazeera, Israel Is Shooting Itself in the Foot, but I can access all of the equivalent article on Haaretz Hebrew, סגירת אל־ג'זירה לא תפגע בחמאס ולא תשנה את מעמדה של קטאר.RolandR (talk) 18:04, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
I can't read Hebrew but I have had the same problem when I attempted to access the Hebrew edition.
If Haaretz is not going to give Wikipedia editors more access than is available to the general public, having it on Wikipedia Library is abusive, a form of advertising and it shouldn't be there at all. This problem should either be fixed or it should go. Also I want to express my disappointment at the utter indifference to this shown by the Wikipedia Library staff. I raised this issue over a month ago, and repeated it privately in an email. Not ONE response. Coretheapple (talk) 14:30, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Haaretz English should be removed from the Wikipedia Library bundle

See above. Haaretz does not offer Wikipedia editors ANY advantage, at least in its English edition. One gets the same access as is available to members of the general public who are not subscribers. Thus its being in the Wikipedia Library package is a form of advertising that needs to stop. I raised this issue over a month ago, have received no response from the Wikipedia Library so I have to assume that this is a feature, not a bug. Coretheapple (talk) 14:35, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

@Coretheapple It seems to be working now, I was able to load a couple of articles on English Haaretz. Isi96 (talk) 19:43, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
I imagine what's available to the general public is available to Wikipedians through the Library. But to to the "Israel Gaza War" section and click on Israel's Mossad Admits for the First Time: We Were Surprised on October 7 and see what happens. No access. Coretheapple (talk) 20:29, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
I checked that article just now, the whole thing is accessible. Isi96 (talk) 08:04, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
It seems there might be a slight lag between it becoming accessible. The newest articles aren't loading for me, but all those that are a day or more old are. – Isochrone (talk) 10:53, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes I now can obtain that as well. However "Mark Rudd Led Antiwar Students at Columbia in 1968. He Says Gaza Protesters Are Repeating His Mistakes," also May 9, is not accessible however. Evidently they are blocking access to recent articles, and allowing at least some older articles to be accessed. While I guess we have to take what we can get, that is a shame as Haaretz is a fully acceptable source per WP:RS. Coretheapple (talk) 15:45, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
By the way I was remiss in not thanking you and Isochrone for helping me to troubleshoot this. Coretheapple (talk) 18:42, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

@Coretheapple: Apologies for the lack of response here - I somehow overlooked your initial post and then I was attending the Wikimedia Hackathon and having some vacation time from 2nd May, so I've only just seen your email and the rest of the messages here. It's possible that Haaretz are embargoing content for a day or two before providing us access, but if that's the case it hadn't been communicated to us before now. It's also possibly a technical issue that we can resolve. We've contacted Haaretz and I'll update here as soon as I know more. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:51, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, appreciate your getting back to me on this. Haaretz is a valued resource on I/P articles, which are often updated fairly quickly, and is rare in that it is used by both "sides" of the controversy. If they have a quiet embargo on new articles it can discourage editors from using it entirely, as editors may react (as I did) that the resource is not available at all. I'm still not certain as to how many articles are withheld from use. Obviously we can rectify this by placing a caveat on the Haaretz/English/Hebrew entries at Wikipedia Library. Half a loaf is better than none. However, I think that such an embargo is unwise and significantly curbs use of Haaretz in Wikipedia articles. So I hope they rethink whatever embargo they have in place. Coretheapple (talk) 15:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi all! I've been using this on my own computer for almost a year now, but it just occurred to me to share this bookmarklet with fellow TWL users. Cannot access Newspapers.com clipping

My clippings redirect me to "This page is not available. This page is pending publication, has been removed or moved to a new location." SL93 (talk) 22:15, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

I don't know why it's happening all of a sudden, but it's fixed on an individual basis if you remove the "-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org" from the url and replace it with ".newspapers.com", which you should be doing anyways if you're using the clipping on Wikipedia, because the former isn't accessible by anyone else without a Newspapers.com account, while the latter url formatting can be seen by everyone. SilverserenC 22:28, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
Ok. I have been just changing it to that once I actually get to the adding the links to the article. Thank you. SL93 (talk) 22:29, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
I assume the page is not available issue is some Wikipedia Library account access problem (which we've seemingly been having in various forms for a while based on sections above), considering it goes away by changing the URL. Is this a known issue? Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:10, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

What worked for me was registering an account at newspapers.com (actual site, not the TWL proxy), logging in there, then logging in again through TWL proxy. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 16:19, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Mike Christie I literally just clipped an article and yes, you must signed in to clip. When you first enter the search page there is a person icon where you can sign in if you already have a newspapers.com account. Otherwise, you need to create an account on Newspapers.com directly. SusunW (talk) 16:20, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
That worked -- thanks! I tried it both ways around -- logging in to my account first and then going through the library; that didn't work. Going through the library and then logging in did work. Thanks for the help! Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, AstonishingTunesAdmirer and SusunW! It's been months of frustration, the lack of clipping.
I'm wondering, is there a way we can add that sort of instruction to the Library itself, so that the larger user base who's not looking on this talk page will know? -- Zanimum (talk) 02:17, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
When asked about this over at the WP:Discord server, @Samwalton9 (WMF) mentioned that instead they've been thinking about removing the Newspapers.com proxy entirely (as it's hard to maintain and has all these issues with clipping) and returning to the system where you manually apply to get your account upgraded for a year. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 02:30, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
That system was easier to use. TrottieTrue (talk) 22:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
For Newspapers.com, yes, unfortunately you currently need to register outside of the library, and then log in inside the library. It's a pain and not how we'd like it to be. If you have thoughts about returning to the older system of individual account accesses I'd love to hear - we're evaluating the workload to move back to that system. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 17:12, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Now that I know how it works it's fine as far as I'm concerned. And I got very quick help here; it's annoying but only a minor issue if everyone knows how to do it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:02, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Samwalton9 (WMF) It's not unique to newspapers.com. Same happens with newspaperarchive and the British newspaper archives. The problem with the old system was that they stopped sending renewal notices, so inevitably your access would be suspended and you'd have to reapply, causing several weeks delay in getting back up and running. Once I figured out the log in system, this seems to work fine, except when changes are made by the provider to their system, and the fact that British newspaper archives billed me for renewal. I paid it, but it was weird. I do think it would be helpful to provide an explanation on the various newspaper collections that to clip you have to sign in. SusunW (talk) 18:10, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
I agree with SusunW. The inconvenience of having to register etc. is very minor compared to the old system. Figureofnine (talkcontribs) 19:06, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
I, too, had this clipping problem. My only complaint about the current system is that if you're trying to use the proxy URL for citations, it points non-Wikipedia-Library users to the top page of The Wikipedia Library not the actual resource. So this is the URL for the item that I see
http://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/image/480189291/
and this is the one I need to use for a citation
https://www.newspapers.com/image/480189291/
I agree the wait time was frustrating with the old system, so I'm not sure of a better solution but I might not mind the old system if it were to come back (apologies for weird formatting, feel free to make it look nicer). Jessamyn (my talk page) 20:39, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
I fixed this issue by writing a small userscript:
Extended content
// ==UserScript==
// @name         TWL proxy fix
// @namespace    http://tampermonkey.net/
// @version      2024-05-23
// @description Replace TWL proxy link in share window
// @author       You
// @match        http://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/*
// @icon         https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?sz=64&domain=oclc.org
// @grant        none
// @require      https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.6.0.min.js
// ==/UserScript==

/* globals $ */

(function() {
    'use strict';
    $('body').on('mouseover', '#share_link_link_url', function() {
        var str = $(this).val();
        var regex = /https:\/\/www-newspapers-com\.wikipedialibrary\.idm\.oclc\.org\/(.*)/g;
        str = str.replace(regex, "https://newspapers.com/$1");
        $(this).val(str);
    });
})();
You'd need Tampermonkey extension installed in your browser to make it work. Then you click on the Tampermonkey icon → Create a new script, replace everything there with this code and click File → Save. Then on Newspapers.com (TWL proxy version of it, that is), once you create a clipping, there will be a blue Share button in a panel on the right side of your screen. When you click it and mouse over the link in the share window, it should replace it with the proper link. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 21:33, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
All that seems really complicated. I just sign in to Newspapers.com, go to "My clippings" and paste the link from there. SusunW (talk) 04:15, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, that works too, but then I would need to keep the second tab opened. And if I already have dozens upon dozens of tabs opened, keeping track of it is daunting. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 04:21, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I already use Tampermonkey so this was an easy adjustment. Jessamyn (my talk page) 21:17, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
I don't understand what "register outside of the library, and then log in inside the library" means. Can you explain further, or point me towards directions on how to do this?
Also, I have been unable to access newspapers.com on my home computer but am able to do so when I log in at my local public library. I don't know why this is, or if it is related to the registration issue you mention. Mehendri Solon (talk) 15:53, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
https://www.newspapers.com/ is "outside of the library". When you access it through The Wikipedia Library ("inside the library"), right now you use http://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/ (known as a proxy server). For whatever reason (unrelated to you unable to access the site), this proxy doesn't work well with the registration process, so you would need to first register at newspapers.com and then use your login/password when you log in through the proxy. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 18:17, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
I prefer the current system even with the clipping issue to the old system of losing access for long periods of time due to the weirdness of never getting notices it was lost. Ealdgyth (talk) 15:45, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Me and several other users at WP:PALEO have noticed that over the last few days that while you can still login to Springer and Nature's Wikipedia library login, it doesn't provide you any access to the closed access material that it would have done maybe two weeks earlier. Has anyone else noticed this? Hemiauchenia (talk) 17:10, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Yep, I've noticed this too, though I've no idea when this access was dropped. I no longer have TWL access to articles in Paleontological Journal or Entomological Review that I used to have, e.g. [3] Monster Iestyn (talk) 13:21, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

ScienceDirect content unavailable / Wikimedia Foundation does not subscribe to this content on ScienceDirect

Hello! Once again (has appeared on archives here as well as on the Meta talk page), I am noticing some articles on ScienceDirect presenting with a Wikimedia Foundation does not subscribe to this content on ScienceDirect banner. Is there some full list of journals that are accessible through it? I am attempting to verify a study in Cell Host & Microbe, which is apparently unavailable, even though WikiLibrary states that we should have access to Cell. I know these are separate journals, but they are under the same publisher, Cell Press, so this is strange that there is access to one from this publisher, but not another. Any advice? Is this an error or intended? Thanks! Top5a (talk) 18:58, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

The list is here. Nikkimaria (talk) 19:30, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! (even though, "ugh!") Cheers, I appreciate the fast response! Top5a (talk) 16:10, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Permission denied

I'm getting the "Permission denied" message for all the sites, which I've never experienced before. Are there technical problems at present? DMBanks1 (talk) 16:43, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Working fine for me. Check your contribution history. Have you made 30+ edits in the past 30days? — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:22, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
@Grand'mere Eugene: I do not make numerous insignificant edits but primarily single in depth edits which add substantial content to a limited number of articles. How do I restore my access? DMBanks1 (talk) 17:36, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, I had it wrong, the criterion is 10+ edits in the past 30 days, and your Contributions page shows you've now made 11 edits in that timeframe. Try again. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 17:59, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
@Grand'mere Eugene: Still does not work. Has there ever been a discussion regarding a criterion which takes into account the size of content added instead of the number of edits. For folk like myself who are making substantial contributions to content, it is possible that I could only have a few edits in a month. Surely one large edit covers more ground than a thousand minor edits. DMBanks1 (talk) 18:16, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
@Grand'mere Eugene: Now restored. Since it is theoretically possible for me to have no edits over a 30-day period when researching a large project, such as the Ashcroft one (which took several hundred hours), should I be doing 10 fake edits in the interim to keep my library access current? If not, how should contributors who primarily add content to grossly deficient articles handle such a situation? DMBanks1 (talk) 19:21, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
You raise some good questions — maybe editors with more knowledge about the rationale behind the requirements for WP Library access can advise? Perhaps voluminous edits should be weighed into the criteria differently, but I suspect the coding would be more complex than we currently have available. — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 19:44, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
The ten-edit minimum can be reached with routine editing tasks, like adding categories, updating lists, even fixing typos--it all adds up. - Penny Richards (talk) 20:31, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
If the underlying content of an article is grossly deficient, which is normally the case for the articles I have been expanding, no matter how many of the above activities are carried out in isolation, the respective content of such articles would remain grossly deficient. Consequently, for those with the appropriate capabilities, time is more productively spent in focusing upon such content deficiencies, which also addresses the routine as a byproduct. DMBanks1 (talk) 21:35, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
For maintaining access to the Wiki library, the rationale adopted bears no correlation whatsoever to either Wiki article research conducted or the product of that research. Since, the present criterion penalizes those who use the library most, I would suggest that the 10 edit minimum either be abolished or a valid criterion be adopted instead. Priority of service requests for Wikipedia Library

JapanKnowledge Lib (one of my (very) desired services) are still stuck in the prospects section even after months (for JKLib: nearly nine months). Is there some priority going on here? Who is allowed to contact the service to provide the access? Chuterix (talk) 06:00, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Chuterix! Thanks for your message. I'm Vipin, the partnerships manager for The Wikipedia Library.
Establishing contact with these organisations takes a considerable amount of time. We try to identify the decision makers in these organisations and reach out to them with an appealing message via multiple channels to start a conversation. Usually that takes a few months and sometimes more than a year. I understand this is an important resource for you. I will keep working on this request and update as soon as we get some response.
On the other hand, if you have a contact at JapanKnowledge Lib or any other potential partners, I would love to get introduced to them. That will make the whole process a lot faster. Thank you! VSj (WMF) (talk) 09:45, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Newspapers.com (again)

Was working fine yesterday .. today ... I log into the Wikipedia library and go to access Newspapers.com and get to a page that just says "start a free trial" instead of what used to appear "access from Wikipedia" (or something similar). Ealdgyth (talk) 18:01, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

I also had this page today. It also logged me out. In my case, logging back in through newspapers.com and then logging in through TWL proxy fixed it. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 22:02, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
I'm unable to make any searches via the "http://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/" version of Newspapers.com. It gives the error:
> There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us.
It was working earlier today. The normal url Newspapers.com website search works, but (as we know) clicking through to any results requires a paid account.
PK-WIKI (talk) 06:30, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
PK-WIKI Every time I have ever had that unable to make searches error on any library collection, it ends up being that I need to clear my browser's OCLC cookies. I am not a technician and have no clue if that will work for you. Sam Walton told me to do that and it has worked for me. I can access newspapers.com through Wiki without any problem right now, so you might try that? SusunW (talk) 14:38, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I keep getting "There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us." now too. Clearing cookies seems to only help for a short time, then it occurs again. Very annoying. Connormah (talk) 15:49, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
I'm experiencing the same error message most times I've checked Newspapers.com the past few weeks, not every time, but the vast majority. Even removing cookies does not help. I should also note that even the contact form linked in the message gives an error if you try to submit it. When googling the error, apparently it only happens to us Wikipedia Library users, and only since late June. I suppose that a recent update introduced a new incompatibility between the Newspapers.com form submission code and our proxy. NGPezz (talk) 19:41, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Problem with clippings

I've been having a problem for a couple weeks now wherein when I click on any clipping, they display for an instant and then redirect to an error page that says "This page is not available; This page is pending publication, has been removed or moved to a new location". The clippings are viewable if I transpose them from www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/ to www.newspapers.com. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:07, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

@Jweiss11: A separate talk page exists for Wikipedia talk:Newspapers.com, where the issue is mentioned. By following the usual routine of copying, pasting and modifying, the clipping is visible when inserted into a Wiki page. DMBanks1 (talk) 21:35, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I know when you transpose the URL, it’s viewable. I acknowledged this above. But it’s incredibly annoying and inefficient not to be able to view the urls in the native library version of the site. Is someone working on resolving this? Jweiss11 (talk) 21:48, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
@Jweiss11: I suspect nobody is resolving the matter. If you contact Nick by continuing the "Error message" thread on the Wikipedia talk:Newspapers.com page, he might know more. DMBanks1 (talk) 21:59, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Bookmarklet for toggling between Newspapers.com and OCLC

Until the Newspapers.com logon issue is completely resolved (major thanks to @Firefangledfeathers and @AstonishingTunesAdmirer for finding workarounds for searching and making clippings), it's going to be necessary to switch back and forth between newspapers.com and newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org versions of pages pretty often. I've been using a bookmarklet to automate the process. To use it, create a bookmark, then edit the URL and paste in the code below. Clicking it while on a Newspapers.com page will change the active page to the OCLC equivalent, and vice versa.

javascript:var url = window.location.toString(); var np = 'www.newspapers.com';var oclc = 'www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org'; if (url.includes(np)) {var newurl = url.replace(np, oclc)} else {var newurl = url.replace(oclc, np)}; window.location = newurl;

Getting page numbers from Oxford Academic

Is it just me or is there now no way to get page numbers from Oxford Academic? I no longer see any option to download a pdf or view page numbers in the browser. It's a lot less useful if I can't provide a verifiable cite. (t · c) buidhe 06:05, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

It's possibly something with Oxford Academic; I have access through a university library and see the same problem for books, although journals appears to be working. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 07:28, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
I see no option to download an entire book, but chapters seem to have a button to download a PDF that indicates the page numbers in the margin. XabqEfdg (talk) 22:58, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
XabqEfdg where are you finding the download button? I cannot see it, for example for this chapter. (t · c) buidhe 03:06, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
When I am at the top of the page, I see a row of buttons in the middle of the screen just above the "Abstract" heading. The leftmost button has a PDF icon and the text "PDF". I can also find it if I search the page (i.e., CTRL+F) for "PDF". XabqEfdg (talk) 03:44, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
Weird. I tried a few different chapters, the pdf button is showing up for some of them but not others. (t · c) buidhe 05:16, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
Oxford are pretty precious all over. They state—even for books where everything can be downloaded—that 'Oxford Academic does not intend for entire eBooks to be downloaded'. So although you can, you shouldn't... for what we are about to receive, etc. SerialNumber54129 14:01, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

Search errors on Newspapers.com

I know this has been mentioned a few times (including by myself a month back), but is there any workaround or solution to this persistent and frequent error message? "There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us." Without the ability to search the site 95% of the time, Newspapers.com is rendered completely unusable, and even the contact form spits out an error message whenever I try to submit it. I do see a lot of discussion on the numerous other issues the service is experiencing at the moment, but this issue in particular feels a bit overlooked and it has been the bane of my existence the past two months. Some of the proposed fixes involve logging into Newspapers.com directly, which isn't an option for me since I'm entirely reliant on the Wikipedia proxy. I'm holding out hope that there is some kind of ongoing dialogue between Wikipedia and Newspapers.com to find a fix. NGPezz (talk) 02:30, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

So, I'll break down the method I've been using as explained by others above, but I'll try to explain it in more general and understandable detail. Hopefully. Note that you'll probably have to use this method every day you're going to login, but it should last the entire day.
First, make sure you're logged into The Wikipedia Library. Next, in two separate tabs, open up the TWL Newspapers.com and then open up the OG Newspapers.com. Make sure you're logged into your Newspapers.com account on the latter. What we'll be doing is making it so the TWL version, which doesn't let you log in right now due to the errors, does recognize you as logged in. Since that's the one that lets you search and make clippings and such.
Then, for both Newspapers tabs, right click and then select "Inspect". This option is probably at the bottom of your right click menu, you may need to scroll down. It's below View Page Source. Now, there's probably a lot of text and menus and chaos on your screen. Just look at the top of the page and you should see a menu bar. You're likely currently on the "Elements" option. Six options to the right of that should be "Application". Click on that. Make sure you're doing this on both separate Newspapers tabs.
This should open up a menu on the left when you click on "Application". Under the "Storage" list, there should be an option named "Cookies". If that option isn't expanded, click the little arrow to the left of it, which should then let you click the indented option below it, which is probably something like "http://www.newspapers." and it probably runs off the screen at that point. Click that.
Finally, we're at the meat of what we want. This is the list of remembered cookies for the website. On your general Newspapers.com one, there's four that we care about, "ncom-session", "ncom-subscription", "user_data", and "user_token". These cookies are what let you be logged in to the general Newspapers.com site. If you look at the Cookies list on the TWL Newspapers tab, you'll likely see only "ncom-session" on that one.
What you want to do is copy the second column, the "Value" one next to the names I just mentioned, and add them into your TWL Newspapers list of Cookies. You might need to double click to make it allow you. For the "ncom-session" one, just copy paste that value over from the general Newspapers.com tab. For the other three, you'll likely have to add the name as well first. So scroll down to the bottom of the Cookies list until you see an open line and right click there and select the option "Add new". Then add in one by one the three names I mentioned above other than "ncom-session", hitting enter after each one and copy-pasting the related Value for each one from the general Newspapers.com tab.
After you have all four names and values entered into their own separate lines on the TWL Newspapers page, X out of the Inspect screen with the button on the top right and refresh your page. It should now show you as logged in on the TWL Newspapers tab (you can close the general Newspapers.com tab now, you don't need it anymore).
That's all the details I have on the mechanism to get the TWL Newspapers website to work. Sounds like a lot, but once you're done it a couple times, it gets pretty easy to do. Annoying you have to do it every day to get the website to work as it used to, but hey, it does work once you do it. Clipping ability and all. I've been using it for a little over a week now. It'll do until we get an actual proper fix. Let me know if you have any questions or if I was too obtuse in any of my explanation. SilverserenC 03:44, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Oh, one more thing. When you make a clipping with your account and try to go to it, it'll take you to an error page. Just change the "-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org" part of the URL to "newspapers.com" to be able to view and use the clipping. Another annoying thing to have to do, but it works. SilverserenC 03:49, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, but none of this advice is applicable to the search issue I'm experiencing, which is why I created a separate discussion. "Make sure you're logged into your Newspapers.com account on the latter" does not help, because I don't have a Newspapers.com account. I only use the Wikipedia proxy. I've already tried removing any and all cookies related to the proxy or the site, it does not make a difference. Logging in is not the problem for me, clipping is not the problem for me, my concern is entirely related to the error message which renders the search function unusable. For what it's worth I tried again this morning, it functioned for about half an hour before the error popped up once more. NGPezz (talk) 15:33, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Ah, I misunderstood what you originally wrote. Is there any particular reason why you can't just make an account on Newspapers.com, NGPezz? It's free and quick to do so and then my method above will work. Otherwise, the entire issue is with the proxy access, which doesn't seem like it's going to be fixed for quite some time. You seem to be having a unique version of the errors, but the general problem does include the search function acting erratically. SilverserenC 20:20, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
And I'm fairly certain it will work if you do so. Since the error message is "There was a problem loading the search results. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact us", right? That's the one I'm seeing right now because I had an old tab logged into the TWL Newspapers, but I haven't done the method above yet today, so I don't have access. Once I do use the method, I'll be able to use it just fine. SilverserenC 20:34, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. My problem is not entirely unique, a few other users voiced similar concerns in an earlier discussion here on June 27th. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Newspapers.com a subscription-based service? They advertise a free 7 day trial, after which they would start charging the credit card I used to register. NGPezz (talk) 23:31, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
That's only if you pick a subscription. You can made an account for free, no credit card required, just an email. You just won't be able to access anything with that account (which is unimportant because you'll be using the TWL version to access things, you just need an account login for my method to work). SilverserenC 01:13, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I did not know that a free account was all it took to use the search function without issue. And thank you for the step-by-step process on how to login (and thus effectively search) in the proxy as well, at least on a daily basis. I did quickly run into the deficiency inherent to a free account on the base site (not being able to view the entire page which hosts the details in question). Fortunately the bookmark toggling function created by Nick Number is exceedingly useful for avoiding this problem, so that I can seamlessly search without the proxy and switch the proxy on whenever I need to view a page. I'll leave another comment if further problems come up, but for now your advice has worked like a charm! NGPezz (talk) 02:46, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Now that it's been a couple days, I can confidently mention that the search error still often occurs within the proxy even in a logged-in state. Fortunately the ability to search is still working perfectly outside the proxy, so I'm satisfied. I'm tagging some other users who have run into the same problem, so that they know there's a decent workaround now: PK-WIKI, Connormah, Zanimum. NGPezz (talk) 17:10, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
Bless you for this. I got newspapers.com to work which I needed for some work I've been doing. Thanks for taking the time. Jessamyn (my talk page) 19:59, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

User:Silver seren, I appreciate you. I tried, but I got lost about halfway through; I didn't see a ncom-subscription cookie, and what follows was probably over my head anyway. I wish someone would just fix this: of all the kinds of databases we could use, this is possibly the most useful one. Drmies (talk) 22:21, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

I've found since, after doing some testing, that you just need to copy over user_data and user_token with their values. The other two don't seem to matter. Just your user login cookies, which those both are. See if you can try again with just those two? I believe in you, Drmies! Just right click -> Inspect -> Application tab -> Cookies option on the left -> Copy over user_data and user_token. SilverserenC 22:28, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
Per User:Goldsztajn above, just copying user_token is enough. I've been doing that lately. However, I now have to redo this procedure daily, not sure if it's related. AstonishingTunesAdmirer 連絡 09:55, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
For the time being perhaps we bookmark a shortened version of this workaround at the top of the page? Or maybe just a link to the discussion when it is archived? Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 11:35, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
Agree. I think we should also note that a newspapers.com account itself is free. The free version allows you to search, but to see pages you need a subscription. And what we do here allows us to see pages without the subscription, using the TWL proxy (which is currently broken and needs this fix to work).
We should also mention the bookmarklet above (thanks User:Nick Number!). Search seems to be broken in the TWL proxy. So, once you fix cookies and see your account name in the top right corner when you open the proxy, you go back to newspapers.com, search there, click on search a result, get the message saying that you need to subscribe, and then you use the bookmarklet to switch to the TWL proxy version of the page. Access to BNA

The subscription account I originally had expired earlier this year and then the library option became unavailable with no accounts available. I have since observed that the BNA may have been added to the library bundle via the oclc proxy based on info here but I cannot work out how to actually access this? If I type the url in manually it says unauthorised and I can't see any other previous discussions. Is BNA now unavailable again? Bungle (talkcontribs) 08:18, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

@Samwalton9 (WMF): are you able to shed any light here? Bungle (talkcontribs) 17:07, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
@Bungle Hi, sorry for the delay in responding - I was out at Wikimania last week. Unfortunately I think BNA is going to be a non-starter for us at the moment. We tried the voucher code route but, per previous communication we sent out, some users were being charged money and this risk was unavoidable. We tried proxy but, per my note here, these manual proxy configurations have turned out to be fragile, complicated, and very time consuming. As such I don't think we're going to be able to proceed with BNA. We'll put out some communication soon to confirm. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:16, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. That's a real shame, as for the short time it was available it proved to be invaluable in citing some British-specific content which isn't available on the more international newspaper archives sites. Bungle (talkcontribs) 19:03, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
That's a pity indeed – what other way is there to find out, say, this? My access is about to expire – is there any news regarding BNA? Mapple (talk) 20:47, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

McFarland

It's been a bit since I've requested a book through McFarland. I remember that in the past, you requested access to a specific book (I think you could for one or two a year), and if it was approved, then you got emailed access to a copy. (I appear to have last done this in March 2022). I see the [extend] button on McFarland along with the Go to Site option, but clicking on the extend button doesn't seem to do anything. Could someone please remind me how this works? Hog Farm Talk 00:29, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

As in how do you request something? Go here. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:52, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
I requested a book recently, it did take some time (7-10 days?), but it was worth the wait. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 22:27, 21 September 2024 (UTC).
