Students receive a survey of linguistic topics and apply the analytical skills to language in advertising (broadly construed). They perform mini research projects that are scaffolded replications of a study they read about in the class. They will be able to use classroom articles as resources for the Wikipedia assignment and as a jumping off point for searching for additional articles to use in their bibliography. The course also considers visual components of advertising and how those support the linguistic message, so the create images and multimedia assignment is highly relevant. Finally, we consider how language in advertising perpetuates particular social stereotypes, so the extent to which the project aims to consider how social meaning and knowledge is constructed, the class seems to fit well with the larger student outcomes. Also, this course satisfies a general education requirement which expects students to have opportunities to develop digital literacy, so I envision this project as being a clear means of giving that experience to students.
