Location and general description of property.—The railroad of The St. Joseph and Grand Island Railway Company, hereinafter called the St. Joseph and Grand Island, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. The main line extends northwesterly from St. Joseph, Mo., to Grand Island, Nebr., a distance of 251.135 miles, with a branch line in Kansas projecting from Stout to Highland, aggregating 257.981 miles of road. The company also owns 67.025 miles of yard tracks and sidings.

- DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY
The recorded mileage owned by the St. Joseph and Grand Island amounts to 258.40, of which 251.55 miles was acquired by consolidation and 6.85 miles by construction. The inventoried mileage is 257.981. Of the 13 predecessor corporations, seven did not construct or improve any property and two made additions or betterments only to property acquired. The 251.55 miles of road were constructed by the remaining four predecessors, as follows: St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad Company (of 1862) 4.60 miles, construction begun by company last named and completed by St. Joseph and Denver City Railroad Company (of 1866) 222.40, Hastings and Grand Island Railroad Company 24.68, The Saint Joseph Bridge Building Company 1.28, less reclassifications 1.41.
