Automatic or Manually Assisted: Automatic
Programming Language(s): AWB
Function Summary: Replacing references to "All Music Guide" to references to "Allmusic"- the site has been rebranded, and many pages need updating.
Edit period(s) (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): Not sure really- whenever I can find the time.
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): N.
Function Details: I intend to use a simple batch of instructions that will replace "All Music Guide" with "Allmusic", "the All Music Guide" with "Allmusic" and "the All Music Guide" with "Allmusic". The site was rebranded, and there are a very large number of references to "All Music Guide" all over Wikipedia- it would be far more professional to update these to references to "Allmusic". I intend to run the bot through what links to All Music Guide, covering only the mainspace, the image space, the category space and the portal space. I have run through this manually for a few edits, and I cannot see any potential problems or false positives.
Discussion
[edit]I am applying for a bot despite my lack of knowledge/experience as I have no desire to clog my account with thousands of edits (over 30,000) and spending many hours doing such a dull task- please point me in the right direction if I have got the wrong end of the stick here, or missed any key information. - I think it should stay as "All Music Guide" for stuff before the site's rename (ie. back when it called itself All Music Guide) and that's how I've always written articles. My opinion - the request itself looks good from a tech standpoint. —Giggy 06:45, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- I am aware that a significant number of people have been changing them so far. I had a good think before I started, and I think it is worth changing it because it isn't a periodical- everywhere on the site now calls itself 'Allmusic'- it's not like issues 1-150 are 'All Music Guide' and 151+ are 'Allmusic'. Whenever it is written from now on, it will be written as 'Allmusic', even if the page was from before the switch, and so I feel that our now outdated mentions of 'All Music Guide' should be changed. Each reference to the site refers to the site as a whole, rather than a particular issue/edition, and the site as a whole is now known as Allmusic. J Milburn (talk) 11:54, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You don't want to change "Allmusic (previously the All Music Guide)" to "Allmusic (previously Allmusic)" in the Allmusic article. Similarly, if an article says "Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic (then All Music Guide)..." you wouldn't want to change that either. Or direct quotes. This would be a useful task in AWB, provided it was monitored, but I don't think it should get a bot flag to run unsupervised. – Quadell (talk) (random) 13:56, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- The first one wouldn't happen, as I would only be running it through what links to the redirect- the article doesn't. The others probably won't come up more than perhaps 20 (complete guess- certainly a very low number) times out of 30,000, but perhaps I could run it as a semi-automated bot? So, it would have the bot flag (not clog my contributions/watchlists/recent changes) but not be fully automated? J Milburn (talk) 17:10, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- That sounds good to me. Or, I would be happy to see a trial run of 100 such unmonitored changes, so we could go through and see if there were any incorrect changes. – Quadell (talk) (random) 17:14, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- I just did that through my main account. Check my contributions from 17:37, 6 July 2008 (The Smashing Pumpkins) until 18:14, 6 July 2008 (Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters). If there's a way to link to a specific batch of contributions, that would be better. The only error I'm really seeing is that at least twice I was left with "Allmusic". That's easy enough to fix, I'll add "Allmusic" -> "Allmusic" to the bottom of the list. There is a potential error with "the All Music Guide" being changed to "the Allmusic" (rather than simply "Allmusic") but that's hardly my fault, as "All Music Guide" shouldn't be in italics anyway. Anyone see anything else? J Milburn (talk) 18:22, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
