Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon November 2017
Bay Area WikiSalon series | ||
---|---|---|
Periodically, on a last Wednesday evening of the month, wiki and open-source enthusiasts meet up to mingle, munch, collaborate or learn about new projects and ideas. At each WikiSalon we plan a brief formal presentation; some will help orient people new to the wiki/open-source world, with others geared to more experienced people. Many presentations will have broad appeal to non-wiki/non-open-source folks. We hope you will join us! Note: We are extremely inclusive – broadly construed – plus we adhere to the friendly place policies of the Wikimedia Foundation.

The November Bay Area WikiSalon will take place on Wednesday November 29th. Please note change of venue: see infobox for details.
Following a productive strategy brainstorming discussion at the September WikiSalon, we will be trying out a new structure that we developed which includes a presentation/performance followed by small group, interactive activities. We will start off open time for socializing, followed by a brief recap of the new strategy, and then dive into the programming. Throughout the event, we will have a separate room or space for folks to edit, hack, and do your own thing if you prefer that over the programming.
The theme for this WikiSalon is Talk Pages and RfCs, and we will explore and discuss these in creative ways via Talk Page Theatre, an experimental, interactive performance activity where we play out discussions on talk pages with dramatic fervor, exploring what happens when we translate written online discussion to verbal exchange, and sparking a discussion around Wiki discourse, truth, empathy, neutrality, and assumptions of good faith. Hosted by artist and Wikipedian Nikikana, this iteration of Talk Page Theater will begin with a brief overview of what talk pages are and what their purpose is in the Wiki World.
Talk Page Theatre
[edit]Here is the plan for this interactive, world premiere of Talk Page Theatre! We are seeking additional volunteers to perform the two scripts for the big group, please contact Nikikana if you are interested
- Brief overview of concept: what is talk page; what can we learn/change about how we work on wiki by taking them off the screen and into physical space, verbal speech; what we can learn/change about the way history is recorded and knowledge is nurtured by doing the same
- We will do two performances for the big group, one that deals with a Topical theme, and one Meta that gets at the deeper architecture of Wiki
- Performance of one Talk Page Scene (Topical or Meta, TBD)
- Discussion of performance (to address some of the following):
- Discuss wiki policies and etiquette that came up in discussion
- Discuss content itself and how discussion here reflects major or niche views, etc.
- Analyze communication between editors, what was constructive, what wasn’t
- Do close reading of what happened, how others may have responded differently
- Discuss the effect of seeing it performed rather than read (and effect of reading it, for performers)
- Performance of second Talk Page Scene (Topical or Meta, TBD)
- Discussion of performance, covering different dimensions than covered in first
- Break into small groups where attendees have assorted Talk Page Scripts to perform together
- Regroup for brief round robin about small groups’ experience – Encourage people to go contribute to a talk page discussion!
