I just wanted to get rid of the red "talk" page at the top right of my screen. Vivalande (talk) 21:53, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Vivalande[reply]

Drive-by templating

[edit]

Hi, Vivalande. You noticed a couple of minor issues of tone at Annales school, and added the {{copy edit}} template there. I've fixed them, and removed the template. Adding a template like that for a minor problem, with no attempt to fix it and no history at the article, is sometimes called "drive-by templating".

While it's good to know you spotted a problem (and thanks for leaving a pointer to them in your edit summary!), WP:BE BOLD is encouraged as a matter of policy, and it probably would've taken you no longer to fix the minor issues than to find the template, and place it on the article. Even if you don't have a lot of experience changing articles, it's fine to just make a good-faith attempt to improve it, so go ahead and just make the change next time, instead of placing a banner about it.

If the article is shot through-and-through with problems, and you don't feel up to making such a lengthy or complex set of changes, feel free to add the template—but in that case, please also add a new section on the Talk page, explaining the reason for adding the template in more detail, and listing some of the main problems you see with the article. You can link the template you add to the Talk page discussion you raised using the |talk= parameter of the template (sometimes called |discuss= in other templates). I hope this helps!

If you have questions about editing at Wikipedia, you can contact me on my Talk page, or ask at the WP:Teahouse. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 23:25, 11 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya, thanks for the message.
Yes, the article reads a little funny and I wasn't up to fixing it at the moment so I left that banner with a couple examples of the odd tone.
But I hear from you that that's generally not appreciated unless the problem is really egregious. Sorry about that, and thanks for fixing those examples I gave.

You're welcome, and leaving the template is better than doing nothing if you don't have the time for a fix at the time, at least your great edit summary pointed me right at the problem, so I didn't waste my time looking all over for it, so thanks much for that!
