Happy April's fools!

Re: Blocked?

Response #2 on my talk page. CIreland (talk) 03:43, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Chinese spammer

I blocked the other one. We'll see what they do. You're right, it's too big a range to range block but given the notorious unresponsiveness of Chinese IPs to to spamming complaints we may have no choice if it keeps up. We wouldn't be the first.

Actually, would a rangeblock really affect that many people? Daniel Case (talk) 07:15, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, I'll leave it to your discretion. I personally wouldn't block the range, not yet anyway. It would feel too pre-emptive on my part. But I can't make that call. (points to lack of mop icon). However, I've asked Cobi to add the range to the blacklist for 24 hours, and I will monitor AIV from this page, a rather handy page I created. If I see another IP in that range, I'll note it on AIV. You think this is OK? Steve Crossin (talk to me) 07:39, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

YUP. I will be calling it a night (on this side of the world) soon, so I'm sure another admin can pick it up. Daniel Case (talk) 07:41, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Re:Welcome

Hi Steve! The category is Category:Frazioni of Italy. The page "Cicogni" is present in the main page but - being a frazione in Province of Piacenza - it should be in the subcategory Frazioni of the Province of Piacenza that doesn't exist... and I don't manage to create it! Thanks for everything --Lokthen12 (talk) 08:14, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Done The category is here. I'm glad I could help. Are you interested in adoption? Steve Crossin (talk to me) 08:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Admin stuff then

  • Alright, here's my 2c worth of admin advice. Factions is bad, everyone in the same boat together is good. Thus, everyone writing and making quality articles as well as reverting etc. is best. An RfA will go much better with those who believe what I do if you have a go making a Good Article or Featured Article. Let me know what you're interested in - article-wise, something not too broad or controversial, and I can give you a few tips. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:27, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Yeah, definetly. I'm interested in politics, US politics specifically. I'm looking through the list of US presidents, seeing if any are worth improving, but I might move on to other members of state. Also interested in law. And, i'm an Aussie, so maybe Aussie politics as well. And, also the TV show 24. Definelty that I would love to improve, more so than the rest. Steve Crossin (talk to me) 10:37, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
OK, the first four would be insanely ambitious, you should ask User:Happyme22 about his epic struggle with Ronald Reagan...Kevin Rudd would win alot of kudos..and I dunno, he's pretty non-controversial as yet so may be a good one. It'd be big though. McKew would be good as it wouldn't be very big. I haven't actually looked at the articles yet - will get back to you on those. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:17, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
  • I'd struggle to find things in the newspapers for Bolte or Calwell. Kennett is definetly an option. Yeah, the US Presidents would be too ambitious. Howard may be as well. And McCew may be a little lacking in context. But Rudd would be a good one, and there would be loads of newspaper articles around. Steve Crossin (talk to me) 11:23, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
...or Steve Bracks, but there's more controversy there than Kev07. OK, have a play and a look and see how you go, tinker with the articles, it is funny sometimes they just fall into place nicely and at others are frustrating in the extreme. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:28, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
That's good then. Listen, I'll post some ideas on the talk page. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:39, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Chris Quinn's edits

Mr.Crossin, this is Vasco Amaral from Portugal,

Regarding your reverting of my edits, and lest i am accused of vandalism, i only say i did not write that stuff about Quinn's jersey being the least popular jersey in last 10 years (in trivia), i only adjusted external link below, like i did not write something like this a few weeks ago in same player's page: User 99.160.59.218 made this "contribution" on March 16: "He is widely known as the worst player in the NBA".

To wrap it up, i build up, not tear down, so i almost never understand when my edits are reverted.

A good week to you Steve, from Portugal, Vasco Amaral - --217.129.67.28 (talk) 15:07, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Misunderstanding at large

HI AGAIN STEVE, VASCO HERE,

After my C.QUINN'S edit, in edit history, this appeared: "14:58, 1 April 2008 Steve Crossin (Talk | contribs) m (3,969 bytes) (Reverted edits by 217.129.67.28 (talk) to last version by 142.244.164.112" - I simply clicked "undo" to revert back to my well-intended changes.

If this was nothing but a misunderstanding, i am sorry, wishing you a pleasant week and overall good wiki-work!

ming_1443.png and Ming Dynasty

Hi, Steve. The discussion about ming_1443.png in the article of Ming Dynasty, people have talked too much. Frankly, I'm so tired. During these days, I unceasingly offered the sources, but people who don't believe the map still cannot accept it.

Please see some records of discussion:

For the last discussion, I cited Mingshi, one of the official Chinese historical works(Please know something about its importance in all scholarly researches) to prove that Tibet was in Ming Dynasty at that period. And no one has refuted it up to now.

My proposal is to do like the image at right.

File:Ming 1443.png
Ming Dynasty in 1443argued in some parts

ming_1443.png is officially drawn by SinoMap Press, although there are some scholars that don't agree with some parts, but their opinions are also different. So I suggest discussing in the text below.

The last version of Ming Dynasty is absolutely the same opinion of some guys, I think that's why they discuss no longer actively like before. So please draw a fair conclusion of this discussion. Mistakes cannot stay in a featured article like this way.

  • I hope you know, mediators cannot "render decisions" per se, our role is to guide conflicting parties, and to help render decisions. Additionally, I cannot take sides on these disputes, have a look at my "Mediation" icon at the top. At this time, I'd suggest maybe filing a request with the Mediation Cabal, of which I am on. Cheers, Steve Crossin (talk to me) 16:47, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
The disputes that should be talked in the talk page of artcile have been removed by User:LaGrandefr. If you have objection, please turn to the talk page of Ming dynasty. Thank you for your comprehension.
I know very well that the mediators cannot "render decisions", but conflicts should have a result and right now, the discussion is completely in deadlock. Can't anyone make a judgment to this conflict? Otherwise, I suggest pasting ming_1443.png and Ming-Empire2.jpg at the same time at the head of article, it could be equal to the 2 sides before the final decision.--LaGrandefr (talk) 11:57, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Conflicts take time to resolve, and this seems to be a complex one. I am still reading the discussion at the moment, but it seems simple negotiation on the talk page may not be effective here, as certain parties are already being rather uncivil, something as a mediator and a Wikipedian, I will not stand for. I recommend you file a case with the Mediation Cabal, instructions are here. I'll probably take the case myself. Cheers. Steve Crossin (talk to me) 12:08, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your continuous concentration to the discussion. I've already done what you told, file a case with the Mediation Cabal Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2008-0402 Ming Dynasty, is it well written? Regards.--LaGrandefr (talk) 12:59, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Steve. I read your instructions in [3]. I'm sorry that I cannot decide which editors are involved in the conflicts or not, so I didn't and cannot add others' names. Certainly I'm willing to negotiate, just like what I've suggested, note ming_1443.png is debated and explain detailedly the controversy in the text of article. Isn't it a good compromise? Regards.--LaGrandefr (talk) 11:43, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

User:PericlesofAthens

Pray tell me, which specific recent comments of mine have been uncivil? That is, personal attacks rather than an attack on his argument.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:47, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, I guess dumbing down everything into one sentence proves it alright

You are aware that this statement is in criticism of a quotation from the Mingshi, not LaGrandefr specifically? Well, the "Bravo, Mr. History" was aimed at LaGrandefr, but not the following statement. Fine, I'll "assume good faith," but this guy has just about spent my patience and good faith with his arrogance and outright refusal to acknowledge (and even degrading of) the scholarly sources I have brought to the table. Not only that, he thinks he's some sort of qualified historian who can judge 300 year old texts! I'm sorry if I lost myself, but he pushed all the right buttons, as I myself am aiming to become a historian.--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:05, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Addendum on Kevin Rudd

I think m last post got lost in an edit conflict and then something else came up. It is a rather active place with alot going on. There is some easy stuff to add, such as who he lost to and then beat in the 2 Griffith by-elections and by what margins, and some more stuff from early life. Another good bet for a GA is something around 12-15 kb that looks more or less comprehensive that needs reffing and polishing....Maxine McKew is fairly big. I will look later. Howdy!

Hey Steve, I am sure you are happy to hear that April Fools day is officially over here at wikipedia and we can now get back to doing some real work :). Just thought you might be interested in taking a peak at this. Tiptoety talk 01:31, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

AIV

Apparently you missed the mediawikispace vandalism. Oy! Talk about vandalizing 2 million pages at once MBisanz talk 03:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh.... this is a project run by volunteers, there has to be some room for fun, otherwise why contribute? Am I saying that changing mediawikispace was a good idea? No! But that is what WP:TROUT is for. In the end did a few jokes really hurt anyone? (Other than the ones who made them that got blocked). Just think of what this place would be like without any humor, and just blank planks for users. Tiptoety talk 04:51, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
I was speaking in hyperbole to Steve. I enjoyed most of the antics today and participated in some, but as you can see from my recent MfDs, I do hold the line against users whose main purpose is to joke around here. Personally, I'd probably have slapped Virdae with a nice trout myself, but was walking to work at the time. MBisanz talk 04:54, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the work you do...

...but please don't insist on quoting policy to me via the AIV page. I used to be an admin and voluntarily gave back the mop and bucket. A vandal is a vandal. This individual in question is a bored kid apparently sitting in a schoolroom in New Zealand with nothing better to do and no intention of contributing in a positive manner. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 08:10, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough, sorry about that one. I'm not a sysop myself, and thinking about it, AN/I would be a less suitable place to deal with that incident. Sorry about that again. Cheers, Steve Crossin (talk to me) 08:15, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

No sweat. You've handled the dirty work around here like a real pro. Please give me a yell when someone nominates you for adminship since I'd like to give my support. Heck, I may nominate you myself before long. Your contributions and dedication far exceed your years; I was amazed just now to learn how old you are. Regards, --PMDrive1061 (talk) 08:20, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

. Really? Well, i am 17, theres no denying that. And so is she. My motivation for everything. :) My contributions exceed my years? How so? I just see myself as a Wikipedian with a lot of time on my hands. I have an admin coach at the moment, as I know any RFA of mine would fail at the time, I rejected the nomination i was given recently, was deleted and restored to my namespace for reference, its here. But, I've never seen you around on Wikipedia. Have you seen me around before? Steve Crossin (talk to me) 08:38, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Holy crow...married at 17? I got married at 21 and I thought that was young! Still, you married well. She's a cutie. Anyway, I've seen you around on AIV.  :) Impressive talk page and impressive history. I used to edit as "Lucky 6.9" but I got a bad case of admin burnout. The abuse was too much. So, I gave back the mop, dropped out of sight for about two years and returned a few months ago to parse articles to Veropedia. Managed to add a few new articles on interesting things here in the desert of Southern California. Most of the time I just do new page patrolling here and add the occasional article on the other wikis I administer. Drop me a yell the next time you're up for a vote. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 08:49, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Yes, she is gorgeous ;) She's a Wikipedian too, but not as much as I am :D Yeah, my talk page is good, I like it a lot :D. But the thing I'm most proud of is the template I helped to make, and my AIV page. It's faster, and more efficient there. I'd recommend everyone to have a similar page. I also like the mediation I've done, both here (dont read it all), here (ongoing), and here. But my guidelines for mediation are in my navbar, I think theyre reasonable. Don't you? I'll be sure to keep in touch with you. :) Steve Crossin (talk to me) 09:03, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Awarding Barnstar

The Barnstar of Good Humor
Aprils fools day was a blast. Loads of users lightened up to have good old fashion fun. I want to thank you for taking part in editing this page in particular and even though I may not know you, embrace the same talk pages, or even edit with you in the near future, I'd like to award you this Barnstar for making Wikipedia a fun environment in which to contribute. Until next year. :) SynergeticMaggot (talk) 13:00, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Caps lock

Hi Steve, Vasco from Portugal again,

Thank you very much for your reply. One think called my attention though (and you were not the first person to address that issue to me): the unease with which capital words are received. I will only say this: writing in such fashion does not mean one is shouting, insulting or otherwise ill-mannered tones. In my case, it might be to stress a point, that word in particular, or it could be just "caps lock mode" was left on and then i right a whole sentence with it, but that does not mean i am being disrespectful, i believe...Tell me your views of this matter, please.

From Portugal, have a great weekend, VASCO AMARAL - --217.129.67.28 (talk) 18:41, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, we all make mistakes, but if you wish to stress a word, use bold or italics. That's a better way to stress your point. May also be better to register an account for yourself. Cheers. Steve Crossin (talk to me) 19:03, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Your comments

I have read you comments and for the moment I am declining to comment until the 24 mediation has completed as I do not wish in any way to prejudice the process, or be seen to be prejudicing the process. Once the mediation has finished though I will comment on the section you directed me to. As for the mediation It has been open since I posted on March 20 and there has been no response from some users. All I am asking is that process be moved along to try and resolve this issue or we could be another six months on this same issue, at this rate.--Lucy-marie (talk) 19:32, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

I thank you for your comments and I shall respect your point of view and will remain civil and shall just simply ignore the comments made by some users if they are derogatory or attacking. I would also like to say I hope we can work together and I hope that the outcome of the mediation is palatable to both of us and does not turn out like the previous mediation which was poorly handled by DBD (in my opinion). I believe Seddon will be objective and handle the case based on the issue bought unlike DBD who in my opinion did not understand the reason for the case being bought and focused on users and not content. The issue here is ridiculously small but does have far reaching consequences as It will hammer out some of how to proceed with mergers of fiction articles.

I would also like to apologise for being uncivil in the past and try my best not to be uncivil when using wikipedia. An example of this is dealing with the merging of Soham Murders and a user where in the past I would have attacked them have decided to go completely by the book as far as I can and state my arguments objectively. Any input or further comments you have will be appreciated and will be responded to accordingly. If you wish to wade into the merger of the above article, I would be grateful as you are a disinterested party and appear to be highly objective.--Lucy-marie (talk) 19:58, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

The link to the specific discussion can be found here. there are very few comments on the page as it is a low volume article (in terms of hits). I am though trying to get it up-to GA and then hopefully FA as it is a very important case in the UK and in terms of missing white girl/woman syndrome. The merging of Carr and Huntley is in my opinion essential for this to occur.--Lucy-marie (talk) 21:07, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Steve,

I believe i am being picked up by the robots for something I am doing wrong with the page i have been adding for the last few hours...

Your last messages said i was vandalising the entry.. I'm the one that started it so would hardly be vandalising it. I justw ant to get it acurate and with in the wiki rules.

I will go back to editing, I hope i dont bother you too much with my constant changes, this is my first entry so am not 100% up to speed on rules etc but have been workign hard to avoid the copyright stuff even tho I have full permission to use anything to do with this subject from the rightful owners.

Have a great day! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Prowlingwolf (talkcontribs) 07:59, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

That's where I got the notion. It wasn't vandalism. 'Twas a good faith edit. 204.52.215.107 (talk) 08:07, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you were wrong on this revert. The media link was to an official youtube channel (i.e. legal). Many other bands have similiar links and there is absolutely no difference between this link and a link to myspace. It makes sense to have a link to youtube as it allows people to review the music of the band. i.e. it's kinda impossible to tell what a band sounds like from text! A link to an official channel is far better than linking to illegal content on youtube. I have absolutely nothing to do with the band, their record label etc. I simply like their music and added this link for the benefit of others - please therefore review your revert which I'm sure you will agree was made in error. Thank you. Anon contributor

ATA Airlines

ATA Airlines is actually shutting down, so my changes all reflect that. Usually current events like this get a lot of attention, but as it is between midnight and 6 AM in the United States, nobody else was editing anything so I took it upon myself.
