Welcome

[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, Snubcube, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question. Again, welcome!

Since you're new, perhaps a welcome is in order. We have a community of chemists, and seeing as we do or not do may give you an idea about what to do around here. Check out WP:CHEMISTRY and WP:CHEMICALS. Also nice to drop a note saying hi at WT:CHEMISTRY & WT:CHEMICALS. We have a style guide: WP:CHEMMOS, perhaps you can peruse it until we've cleaned up Commons. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 01:57, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Diagrams

[edit]

Please check around about structures of chemical compounds. Looks like you are helpfully identifying some bad numbering but your structural instincts are way off. Lot of us can advise if you ask, so please do. Welcome to the project.--Smokefoot (talk) 14:15, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please stop blindly adding structures of chemical compounds? Many of them are not as simple as you describe. Some of them are just ridiculous, see aluminium monofluoride. I know it might be lots of fun to play with a new drawing program, but polluting Wikipedia is not the way to go. You have been contacted once already, but you are still persisting in putting up structures as fast as they are reverted. Stop it, or you will be blocked! --Rifleman 82 (talk) 20:31, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The chemical structure I added for aluminium monofluoride is based off the chemical structure shown on the ChemSpider entry corresponding to it. All of them are based on one of the references for the compound. Snubcube (talk) 20:54, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can you take two seconds and think about whether or not such a compound is realistic or not, before uploading an image? The charges aren't even balanced. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 21:00, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You are right. That one I should have caught. The text also says aluminium(I), which resolves the charge. Snubcube (talk) 21:21, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gallium should also probably not bond ionically with hydroxide yet covalently in an oxide. Electronegativity is borderline. I guess am done drawing chemical structures, at least new ones. I clearly do not have the expertise required to judge whether a structure is right. I was converting old png/jpg structure renderings to svg ones the other day, which I may still do if that is fine. I still cannot spot when there are mistakes in them, but at least then the mistakes are already there. Snubcube (talk) 21:45, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The few structures I just spot-checked I had to revert because they were all wrong. Sometimes it would take a pretty deep understanding of them to know why, other times it's clearly stated in the article itself. Adding images that contradict the article text doesn't help. DMacks (talk) 20:48, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. I didn't realize. Snubcube (talk) 20:54, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I warned you early today about the problem but you continued adding stupid images until you were blocked. Your bad behavior, as well as your childish understanding of chemistry, suggests that you should not edit here.--Smokefoot (talk) 21:40, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't notice that anyone had left me a message until I was blocked. I am sorry that I seem to have upset many people here. I did not intend to do so. Snubcube (talk) 21:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's inexplicable that you did not notice the big orange bar on the top of your page telling you that you have messages. If you wish to fix things, I would suggest you start at Commons, and request that your contentious file uploads be deleted.[1] That would save us a lot of time going through them individually. An honest effort to fix things would go a long way toward a request for unblock. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 22:16, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I did not notice a big orange bar. I would like to fix things. Would it work to add something like (without extra spaces) { { Speedydelete | 1=I made this diagram. Is likely wrong and should be removed to avoid confusion. } } at the top of the commons pages? Snubcube (talk) 23:10, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not an admin there, so you will have to figure out the process there. It seems fine. You might be able to ask User:Leyo/Commons:User:Leyo for help; he is a chemist who is active both here and on Commons. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 01:51, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I tagged all of them for deletion except for the three that are still in use: [2], [3], and [4]. Do you suppose you could confirm for me which if any of these are correct? I will tag the ones that aren't right, but someone else will have to remove the usage. Snubcube (talk) 04:22, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed KNO2; apart from that I think it's fine. From an aesthetic point of view, if O-Br can be reversed, it will look much better. I'll take your block off, but I would advise you to go easy and not embark on some huge project all at once. Talk to the chemists at CHEM/CHEMISTRY and I think you'll be fine.

That you mentioned it earlier, I would suggest you NOT trace GIFs or PNGs into SVGs. Most GIFs were uploaded maybe 5 years ago at low resolutions, and they should be re-drawn and saved as PNG or SVG. Most PNGs are more recent, meet our style guidelines, and are reasonably scalable. There is little value in duplicating or re-drawing them in SVG. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 04:33, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I tagged KNO2 and reversed the rendering order on BrO-. Snubcube (talk) 05:37, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As for redrawing as svg, I was actually referring to [5]. Snubcube (talk) 21:22, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry you got such a rude welcome here

File source problem with File:Føroya KFUK Skótar.svg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Føroya KFUK Skótar.svg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Notice of disputed non-free files

Hello, one (or more) of the images you uploaded that fell into the {{Non-free Scout logo nocontent}} category have been re-tagged with {{Di-fails NFCC}}. This means that the image may be deleted unless rationale for its inclusion on Wikipedia can be provided. This change was made due to a deletion discussion for the first template. If you have any questions, please reply here (ping me with {{u|Primefac}}) or on my talk page. You can see all of the files at Category:Disputed non-free Wikipedia files as of 21 January 2016. Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Bronze Cross of Merit (Polish Scouting and Guiding Association).svg appears to be missing information as to one (or more) of the following :

  1. The author or creators of the work, (including information as to the author's lifespan).
  2. Where and how this particular version was obtained.
  3. When the work was created,

If you did provide such information, it is currently confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|Snubcube}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the {{own}} template.

Please also add authorship and sourcing to other files you created or uplopaded. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Ye-Ītyōṗṗyā Iscaout Mahber Yeljagered Kifle Mekitle.svg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Ye-Ītyōṗṗyā Iscaout Mahber Yeljagered Kifle Mekitle.svg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
