Your note

[edit]

Hi, Snap pea. :) Welcome. I'd be happy to "adopt" you if you believe that I can help you. Your first page represents a really impressive start; you don't often see people fresh out the gate with an understanding of categories.

I did a little bit of "wikification" to your article Seam types by switching your ===header 3=== to ==header 2==. The Wikipedia:Manual of Style can be valuable reading here to help you figure out how to use these types. I'd recommend that the next thing you tackle in addressing the article are internal links. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links) sets out some of the policies and how-tos about this. For example, you might link "apparel industry" to Textile industry. The way to do that so that you still show the words you want while linking to the correct page is to "hide" the real name: [[Textile industry|apparel industry]] looks like this when somebody isn't interfering with its expansion, like I did: apparel industry.

Again, welcome to Wikipedia. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your feedback

[edit]

Hello Binksternet,

I am a new user on Wikipeida. My first article is on Seam types in the apparel industry. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind looking over my article and giving your feedback in regards to layout and content. My article name is "seam types", but it is very much a work in progress. I would be delighted to have your input.

Thank you, Snap pea 03:37, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Snap_peaSnap pea 03:37, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have any advice to offer you regarding your article about apparel seam types. I have no expertise in that area. Binksternet 15:45, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Good morning, Snap pea. :) I know that in general copyright law, a derivative work of the nature you describe would still represent a copyright violation. Wikipedia:Ten things you may not know about images on Wikipedia suggests that Wikipedia is more cautious even than required by law to avoid such copyright violations, but through "fair use" can put things like album covers on articles about albums...not discographies, though—complicated. :) Coming from an academic background, I'm a little unclear on some of the "fair use" allowances for images per Wikipedia's purposes. Reading over Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Unacceptable_images, I fear that a drawing of seams copied from illustrations of seams in a book may be interpreted like #3, as it is a similar kind of usage. My caveats aside, the thing to do at this point is ask the people in the know. There are three places you could ask this question. I would start with Wikipedia talk:Non-free content, link your article for them & tell them what you're hoping to do. The page has active conversation, so you may get an informed response within a day. My general philosophy is that if you can ask at the specific policy page, you're more likely to get a response from people who deeply understand the guidelines. :) Other options include Wikipedia's Help Desk which is for new and experienced users alike and the village pump, which is the big general conversation point on Wikipedia for tricky questions. This is subdivided into five sections. I would ask that one at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy). --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:53, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A good start

[edit]

I am not qualified to help on your subject, but the article Seam types looks good so far. However it needs to be "wikified", by placing words that have an article of their own in square brackets. The item under references is presumably a published work on the subject. You need to provide more details of this work. Books are usually cited by author (or editor), title, and publisher, with place of publication and date. There is a correct format for this (which can be approched several ways, the simplest being putting the book title in double quotes -title and the publisher etc in brackets. Some comments

[edit]

Hi and welcome to Wikipedia. There is some good information in your article on seam types, but it could still use some work. For example "cover stitch, from the 600 class stitches" means nothing to me, and sounds like it might be copied from a specific manufacturer's manual. Remember that you should assume your readers know almost nothing about sewing.

We don't currently have a basic article called Seam (sewing) and I would suggest that we need one, and perhaps both Seam allowance and Seam types should be merged into it as sections of the main article.

As far as illustrations, either a drawn illustration of the seam construction or a photo of the seam (front and back) would be helfpul. - PKM 20:42, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with everything said above, especially that illustrations would be useful. Loggie 11:49, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Illustrations

[edit]

To answer your questions, all drawings of seams (and weaves and stitches, for that matter) look pretty much the same. You can redraw your owm without worrying about infringing on someone's copyright, or if you are in the US you can scan or photocopy anything published before 1923 (just indicate the source where you found it when you upload the image so it can be verified as pre-1923).

I'd be happy to help move and merge articles. - PKM 17:10, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As far as the illustrations, if you are doing standard seam types, you can draw them by hand, scan them, and upload them as your own work. Why dont you start with one and let's see how it works in the article? - PKM 06:51, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am now thinking that leaving this article where it is and just linking to a new article Seam (sewing) would be better than trying to merge them - your information is very specific to clothing manufacturing and doesn't really apply to home or hand sewing, or tailoring. I have made a "red link" to seam (sewing) in your article. I have moved also moved Seam types from the category "sewing" to "seams", since articles should (generally) be placed in the most specific subcategory that applies. - PKM 06:55, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Bound Seam a.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bound Seam a.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 17:10, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: This image is very simple: why don't you ask at the Graphics Lab if someone there can convert it to SVG format? Make sure you say that you created the image, or who/where did you get the image from. (Don't be intimidated by those with "bot" in their names! They're only automated!) ~user:orngjce223 how am I typing? 22:58, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Superimposed Seam.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Superimposed Seam.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Graduation

[edit]

Hello, Snap pea. I see that it's been a while since you've been active on Wikipedia. I hope that life is treating you well, whatever you've been doing with it. :) I'm dropping you a line to let you know that I am marking you as "graduated" from my mentorship, as you have not required my assistance for over 30 days now. As set forth at my adoption policy, I presume that to mean I no longer have anything to offer you. :) That doesn't mean you can't drop by my page if you have questions or if a situation arises in which you feel you could use my assistance or, really, just to say hi. Good luck to you, and happy editing. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:38, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
