Thank you

Yeah, I realized that right after it finished reverting. I posted on his talk page accordingly. Thank you! -- GorillaWarfare talk 02:18, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

No problem, just try to take an extra second or two. Thanks for clearing that up. Regards. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:20, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

AIV report

I don't necessarily consider removing speedy tags to be vandalism ... despite the instructions in the tags, some people just think it's OK to remove them and don't use {{hangon}}. His other activities suggest he is like a great deal of other people we deal with at UAA, who might become positive contributors were they to realize they can't use that username.

Funny thing is it's a perfect case for a username block, which I will go do. Daniel Case (talk) 04:45, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, thanks for explaining. Honestly I don't understand the username which may be why I don't see why it's a valid case at WP:UAA, but I do consider removing speedy deletion templates after 4 warnings (or in this case 5) as vandalism (and beyond that the user decided to recreate the page and continue to remove the deletion templates). At WP:VANDALISM a related comment is "For example, adding a controversial personal opinion to an article is not vandalism; although reinserting it despite multiple warnings can be disruptive" – this is basically the same thing in the opposite direction. In any case, the user's been dealt with, so it's somewhat nonsensical to discuss exactly why, the result was the same. Thanks for taking the time to elaborate on this and taking care of the issue! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 04:50, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

group temporary incubator

Hi, while talking on IRC before about the Stoned ducks article, you mentioned something about group temporary incubator or something like that. Where can I find more info about this? Thanks in advance, Firmis132 (talk) 10:36, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi again Firmis132. Check out the article incubator at WP:INCUBATOR. Good luck with your article! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 10:37, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Yuba City Charter School

I posted quite a few articles on yccs and i don't believe you should have deleted them. i am a student there and i know more than you about the inner workings. no offense but if you would please put my posts back on i would appreciate it.Halfwite (talk)ῼ 03:03, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but the only edit I see from you that I reverted was one that turned the page into [1] this. Since you only added what appeared to be test code, I removed it. Try the sandbox if you need to test some edits. However, please note that Wikpedia is not a venue through which to "declare how poor a school is". These disparaging kinds of edits cannot be accepted without verifiablity, so you need reliable sources for your content. Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 03:06, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

you deleted it again what do you have against this post?Halfwite (talk) 03:31, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi there! Sorry for the delay as I had to go away for a bit. That was not me removing your content. You can check who made changes by viewing the page history. Anyway, please note that the source of content must be independent. As a student of that school, you likely have a conflict of interest and should read that guideline and try to be careful with your edits. Note that we cannot accept original research from you directly; verifiable, reliable sources must be referenced for this content. Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 04:47, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

My RfA

I've left a reply at my RfA in regards to your last comment. Please tell me if you're watching the RfA, to prevent me from leaving unnecessary messages here. Thanks. Connormah (talk | contribs) 01:41, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Connormah, yes I am watching the RFA, but thanks for dropping a line anyway. Good luck with your candidacy; I will continue to review your contributions and the discussion as a whole as I mentioned earlier. Regards, --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 01:43, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. Thanks. Connormah (talk | contribs) 01:45, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to be somewhat less active for a while

Because of unexpectedly high work load, I won't be able to maintain the 500/mo edit rate that I've been at since about October of 2008. In particular there'll be some days where I'll be away from early morning to late evening. The reason I mention this here is because for the past three months I've been trying to get responses to the submissions on the False positives page as quickly as possible, and won't be able to do that for the time being. Since you've been active there for a while and have done some great things in response to glitches in the filter I'd appreciate if you could help fill the gap I'm leaving, especially during weekdays; however I assure you I will still check the page at least once per day even so. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 18:19, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Soap. Sorry to hear that you're backing down a bit, but I hope that you enjoy a little break; you deserve it. I'll try to keep up with WP:FALSEPOS though you have been extremely fast at responding and it will be difficult for me to reach your level of responsiveness. But, I have the page watchlisted and should get alerts via RSS. Have a good break! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 21:50, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Excellent portfolio. Although, or maybe because, I'm not particularly seasoned in nature and landscape photography, I really like your photos a lot. What equipment do you use? noisy jinx huh? 23:55, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! I use a Canon 5D Mk II for the shots. Presently my only lens is the Canon EF 24-70mm lens (f/2.8L), but I'm getting very close to grabbing the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS along with a 1.4x teleconverter. I have more filters than I can count, too, and my primary reason for this is, while people say I should just use Photoshop instead, I believe that it's important to get the shot right the first time to maximize what you can produce. Thanks for the comments! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:20, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Filter 263

Hello... thanks for the note. 263 is aimed at stopping extremely crude and profane talk page notes posted by a banned user with a track record of using rotating IPs to evade his ban and attack sysops and other users who have opposed him. I think it has been quiet for a while simply because of a large-scale block on the university he posts from, but that cannot last forever. If it is at all possible to keep the filter, I'd appreciate it. --Ckatzchatspy 02:25, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Sure no problem. I'm just going through candidates right now to see what can and can't be turned off. I have no objection to leaving it on right now; by itself, it isn't causing any performance problems. It's a collective problem. I'll just look somewhere else. Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:27, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. Please feel free to drop me a line if you ever find you really need to kill it. Cheers. --Ckatzchatspy 02:33, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Participation at my RfA

Thank you for taking the time to weigh in on my RfA. It was successful, in that the community's wish not to grant me the tools at this time was honored. I'm taking all the comments as constructive feedback and hope to become more valuable to the project as a result; I've also discovered several new areas in which to work. Because debating the merits of a candidate can be taxing on the heart and brain, I offer this kitten as a low-allergen, low-stress token of my appreciation. --otherlleft 14:38, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

List of tallest residential buildings in the world

I am going to nominate this article for Feature list, "LIST OF TALLEST RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD" i need your help regarding any mistakes, errors, gramatical mistakes and much more in this article, my purpose is to make this article perfect or close to perfection, means no mistakes and errors so that it would for sure become a feature list. The peer review of this article has almost been completed, Finetooth has reviewd this article, and i have made alot of changes since the review of this article has been started. Nabil rais2008 (talk) 12:00, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there! I went ahead and did a thorough copyedit on the article. It is a surprisingly good list, so good work on that. It did need some work with grammar, etc., but I think it should be pretty good now. Nice work. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 19:39, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

I have added some more stuff in this artcle, kindly have a look and make it better by improving grammer, and punctuation i will be thankful to you.

Thanks for your RfA Participation

Shirik/Archives/2010/February - Thanks for your participation in my recent successful RfA. Even though your position was neutral, your comments were constructive and welcome. As the community has expressed its trust and confidence in me, and as you are an equal part of that community, deFacto your confidence and trust in me is much appreciated. Your VOTE 2 vote at CDA

Hi Shirik,

you are receiving this message as you voted in VOTE 2 at the recent Community de-Adminship 'Proposal Finalization' Poll. Unfortunately, there is a hitch regarding the "none" vote that can theoretically affect all votes.

1) Background of VOTE 2:

In a working example of CDA; ater the 'discussion and polling phase' is over, if the "rule of thumb" baseline percentage for Support votes has been reached, the bureaucrats can start to decide whether to desysop an admin, based in part on the evidence of the prior debate. This 'baseline' has now been slightly-adjusted to 65% (from 70%) per VOTE 1. VOTE 2 was asking if there is a ballpark area where the community consensus is so strong, that the bureaucrats should consider desysopping 'automatically'. This 'threshold' was set at 80%, and could change pending agreement on the VOTE 2 results.

This was VOTE 2;

Do you prefer a 'desysop threshold' of 80% or 90%, or having none at all?
As a "rule of thumb", the Bureaucrats will automatically de-sysop the Administrator standing under CDA if the percentage reaches this 'threshold'. Currently it is 80% (per proposal 5.4).
Please vote "80" or "90", or "None", giving a second preference if you have one.

This is the VOTE 2 question without any ambiguity;

Do you prefer a "rule of thumb" 'auto-desysop' percentage of 80%, 90%, or "none"?
Where "none" means that there is no need for a point where the bureaucrats can automatically desysop.
Please vote "80" or "90", or "None", giving a second preference if you have one.

2) What was wrong with VOTE 2?

Since the poll, it has been suggested that ambiguity in the term "none at all" could have affected some of the votes. Consequently there has been no consensus over what percentage to settle on, or how to create a new compromise percentage. The poll results are summarised here.

3) How to help:

Directly below this querying message, please can you;

  • Clarify what you meant if you voted "none".
  • In cases where the question was genuinely misunderstood, change your initial vote if you wish to (please explain the ambiguity, and don't forget to leave a second choice if you have one).
  • Please do nothing if you interpreted the question correctly (or just confirm this if you wish), as this query cannot be a new vote.

I realise that many of you clarified your meaning after your initial vote, but the only realistic way to move forward is to be as inclusive as possible in this vote query. Sorry for the inconvenience,

Matt Lewis (talk) 14:37, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I left a note clarifying my position. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 16:05, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Help

Your method might be helpful but to do this, it requires to change the whole table's format which is time consuming, tell me the shortest way to sort, actually the columns of "Cities", "Countries" and "Height" are sorted but the columns of "Built", and "Floors" are not sorted so help me in this reagard try to apply your example in the article.

Nabil rais2008 (talk) 16:40, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that is the only way to sort. If it is sorting incorrectly, then the initial advice of using {{sortkey}} along with my suggestion was appropriate, but that will also require a lot of work. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 16:43, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks again

Thanks for the offer... I left a note at the AN/I page as well. I'm not certain a specific filter is warranted at this time, unless it can filter out similar events directed at other editors. Interesting that the filter can be tuned like that, though. Cheers. --Ckatzchatspy 17:24, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

I like the direction questions like yours at RfA are taking.--otherlleft 02:21, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! If you have any suggestions on how I might be able to improve them, feel free to let me know. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:23, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure if it would be fair for me to do that, since I haven't ruled out standing for RfA again! (Although you didn't ask me about them the last time . . .)--otherlleft 16:56, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
It's not like the questions are only for you! My questions are generally composed to evaluate how an administrator will reflect what I perceive to be the community consensus. Your opinion has a definite impact on that consensus, of course. One opinion doesn't make consensus, but it influences it! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 19:29, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

RfA

Do you have any suggestion on when I should reopen another? I still feel that I'm ready, but the rushed answers to my last RfA did not help, and were certainly inexcusable mistakes. Looking over some other questions asked at RfAs, I don't seem to have a problem answering them without reading policy pages for reassurance. I would really like to help out the community in the same ways as I do now, but in a more extended way. Any thoughts/questions are appreciated. Thanks for your time. Connormah (talk | contribs) 05:25, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Connormah. I think for someone in your situation, the time spent editing wasn't as much of a concern as the (demonstrated, whether or not real) misunderstanding of policy. Accordingly, I don't really think I can put a hard time on how long you should wait before trying another RfA. However, I think you should try to get experience in those areas where you demonstrated a misunderstanding, such as in CSD by being active in new page patrol. If you can demonstrate understanding of policy through action I think you will do much better in a future RfA. Unfortunately, the time to do that entirely depends on your activity; the only appropriate answer is "as long as it takes". If you want a more concrete answer, I can say that most people want to see a wait of a few months before a second RfA. Anyway, good luck, and sorry for the (non-) answer. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 08:39, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Tošo Dabac

Hi, I'm planning on nominating the article about Tošo Dabac for Good or Featured article some time soon so I would like you to help me with copyediting and style. Most of the sources I had to use were written in Croatian so I had to translate a lot of it, and although it looks okay to me I would like a native speaker to take a look at it. Also, any suggestions on how to improve the article would be appreciated. Thanks for your help! Cheers :-) Timbouctou (talk) 07:00, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Sure I can take a look at it. If you wouldn't mind though, I'd ask that it wait until tomorrow, as I was about to go to sleep. If you don't mind waiting that time, then I'd be glad to do it. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 07:03, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Oh yes of course, it's not really that urgent. Take a look whenever you feel like it. Timbouctou (talk) 07:14, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Hey there. I finished the copy edit on the article. You can see my changes here &endash; please verify I haven't made any content incorrect. I tried to correct some NPOV issues that I saw floating around (primarily due to peacock terms), but I suggest that you take a second look at the article and make sure that he's not getting undue credit for being "such an important photographer". Keep in mind that strong statements require strong sources. Let me know if you have any questions! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:36, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Looks great. I'm delighted you took the effort to improve the article. I really appreciate it. As for incorrect content, only one thing - you've wikified the "International Exhibition" term assuming that it referred to an EXPO, when it really referred to an International Salon of Photography in Munich - but this is clearly my fault. It really isn't a big deal but I'm just curious why did you delete the article in the last sentence of the lead section that went "Dabac was also a very versatile photographer". Can this work without the indefinite article? It sounds odd to me but I trust your judgment more than mine. As for undue credit, he has been lauded as the most important photographer of the country quite a lot in the past 5-6 years but I can't find any English-language sources for this. I will probably look for books about him in the local libraries this week and will try to add something about his style but chances are these will mostly be offline sources originally written in Croatian. I hope this will not be a hindrance to the article getting promoted to at least GA status. I think some 80 percent of the final version is there and I would be grateful if you would agree to have a look at it once more once it gets expanded. This is my first attempt at getting an article promoted and I feel like I could use some pointers as to how to make it interesting to readers without resorting to peacock terms. In any case, thanks very much for the copy edit and sorry for babbling so much. Cheers. Timbouctou (talk) 03:34, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
My fault on the missing article. I wanted to do a correction but only did half of it and not the other half. I've now corrected that. Note that your sources don't necessarily have to be in English; it's OK to use non-English sources. Feel free to ask for another look after you do some expanding. I think it's pretty close to GA, but I do think some more sources would be very helpful in improving its quality. If you see anything else, please feel free to let me now. Not a problem at all! Happy editing! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:44, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Islam

why did you delete it? i left a reference right? if its not a good reference can you choose a better one? Quranists denomination is not listed on the main islam page —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jigglyfidders (talkcontribs) 17:39, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. What I did was part of what is known as the bold, revert, discuss cycle. I admire your bold change, but I don't think that the source you provided was reliable, and the material is contentious. However, I strongly suggest you discuss this on Talk:Islam and state why you think this is a good source. I am not an expert on this subject, so by all means, discuss it and hopefully we can come to an agreement. It would also be useful to get a third opinion on this matter at that talk page. Substing warnings

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When using certain templates on talk pages, as you did to User talk:Jigglyfidders, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:uw-test1}} instead of {{uw-test1}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thank you. --McGeddon (talk) 18:33, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

... whoops... I knew that, I think I just need a break. Thanks for fixing it. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:34, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
No problem. I'd recommend giving Wikipedia:Twinkle a try, if your browser supports it - it gives you an easy two-click system for adding warnings to user pages, and you never have to remember about substing. --McGeddon (talk) 18:41, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
I have twinkle installed. I don't use it for user warnings because I find it unnecessary and I prefer to modify the text from time to time. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:42, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Football league maps

Hi,

Thank you!

However, I plan to be doing much more of this work, only perhaps not with such a hectic schedule. I hope to cover the years 1888-1905 in the next few weeks, then 1906-1915 during this spring, and perhaps 1918-1939/40 during the World Cup.

I've tried to do a thorough job, e.g. checking all the coordinates myself, since the previous version of the map for the first leagues season left quite a bit to be desired.

Hi. I don't want to go into the details of this filter but normally you wouldn't be hitting it. I had to expand it today to be a bit more aggressive due to a distributed attack. I will likely return it to its original setting in a little while after we're sure the attack has settled. Hopefully at that time, your exemption will no longer be necessary and you will not hit the filter. Happy editing! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:45, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I note that you have commented on the first phase of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

As this RFC closes, there are two proposals being considered:

  1. Proposal to Close This RfC
  2. Alternate proposal to close this RFC: we don't need a whole new layer of bureaucracy

Your opinion on this is welcome. Okip 03:29, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I will take a look at it. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 03:36, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Vic Schoen

Thank you for allowing me to post my article on Vic Schoen. I was wonderig if you could capatilize his last name for the wiki link? Also, there are other wiki articles where he is mentioned. But when I click on them they don't send me to the new article that I just made. Does it take some time for them to accept the new Vic Schoen article?

Thank you,

I moved the article per your request. Where are these other articles? There should be no delay. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 21:43, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Template Question

I saw you used a vandalism template on someone's talk page, the one that references the actual change that occurs. I'm curious, what's the code for that template? The one I use right now is subst:uw-vandalism1 and it's rather vague. Thanks! --Warbirdadmiral (talk) 06:38, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Hey there. I use a semi-automated tool known as huggle to help with this, but the template it uses is Template:Uw-huggle1 and company. Feel free to try to use it manually, but you might consider picking up Huggle to help out. Hope that helps, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:41, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
I see. I'm curious, I'm using Vandal Fighter right now, and Huggle seems to have a better interface. Have you tried VF, and if so, do you like Huggle better?--Warbirdadmiral (talk) 06:44, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm afraid I haven't used it. I've only used Twinkle and Huggle, and I swap back and forth between the two depending on what exactly I'm doing. Huggle has a very efficient interface, though it has its own share of problems. Some day I might correct those problems, but until then, I'm content with it. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:46, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I just did some fairly extensive research trying to look up views on the competition and I found out there was actually another competition with four countries held back in 2009, as well as the competition in 2010. They seem to have identical formats, but

  1. I can't find the winners of the 2009 competition, or where it was held, or hardly any information on it. I'm almost leaning towards the fact that it didn't end up happening, because the 2010 mobile cup. However in a press release they said "MOBILE WORLDCUP 2008 (2008 would have had finals in 2009) enjoyed widespread support and exposure with more than 700,000 contestants in South Korea, Brazil, Canada and the United States." and in a press release four months later they stated "This year, LG expanded MOBILE WORLDCUP from four to sixteen participating countries and a total prize pool of US $1 million, the largest purse for an event of its kind." However the 2010 competition is mentioned as the first one in the new york times article. What should I do about that.
  2. The information about texting rates from the other participants does not seem to be available.
  3. They had international qualifiers for the 2010 competition and the 2009 competition, although there is little to no information involving this.
  4. I can add information about a few of the nationals.
  5. Some press releases indicate there were to be 16 nations, although only 13 participated.
  6. I've fixed a few of the issues
  7. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to incorporate the information in the lead into the body without renaming / restructuring the rest of the article. Any idea on how to do this?
  8. Looking back, it does seem a bit premature. However, I have never nominated a GA before, and was encouraged by a few people to nom it. I'll be working on it for the next few days, and should be able to address concerns, but the above issues are troubling.

Essentially the 2008/9 event could be an issue. Sorry for putting you through this, but this ism y first GA attempt, so I am a little eager for guidance. NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 06:29, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

I will totally help you through it. I want to see it to GA too, and honestly, if the content doesn't exist, then it simply doesn't exist. I'll work with you to get it there. Let me make a pass at looking for some references, etc. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:44, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Sound good. Thanks for helping me on my first GA nom :) NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 23:41, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
