Indian religions fracas

Hello Samir. I'm just wondering if you might want to take a quick look into this. There has been a lot of arguing on my talk page involving User:BhaiSaab, Holywarrior and Bakasuprman as well. Even Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Bakasuprman is now up and running. There seems to be a lot of hostility on both sides, there are some definite personal attacks, but I am wondering what to make of some strong and irrelevant religious commentary (christian vs hindu) at Talk:Californian Hindu textbook controversy about Popes, inquisitions, Holocaust, anti-semitism and Dalits etc on the other side of the ledge. I thinking of trying to give an amnesty for somethings where both parties opened fire and ask them to sign up to a kind of informal parole condition for conduct on talk pages. Thanks again, Blnguyen | rant-line 02:01, 10 August 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Looks like these guys have very strong religious opinions, and towards other religions, and their display of their thoughts on these things when they were supposed to be discussing the content has lead to some bad blood.

  • Holywarrior got into an argument on Talk:Californian Hindu textbook controversy irrelevant to the content. An general debate on the politics of religion occurred, possibly leading to his blacklisting on those lists. He is also on a list at User_talk:Subhash bose. (Late July)
  • Dangerous-Boy uses the term "bible-thumper" while debating on the same page with a person who is self-declared as a high-ranking member of a missionary organisation. Despite the obvious conflict of interest, this is an unfortunate usage of language.
  • The list is discovered, and in the course of the debate, many users inappropriately cite others' religion during the debate, rather than the appropriateness of the list. This occurs in a few AfDs also.
  • Hostilities break out......lots of accusations... which I have investigated for subsequent stuff and will prepare my findings on my talk page.

I don't really think there is any rule against users debating religion unless they make jibes about the religion or insults against other users based on that, but we can see why it isn't a good idea to parade religious opinions. I don't think I can do anything about that, if the users have difficulty working with each other because of their known differences in religious ideology I don't think there's anything one can do to change their outlook, since we aren't psychologists or the like... so I think I can only comment on the subsequent clashes and niggling. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 05:12, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images on some articles

Hey Samir, just wanted to let you know that I noticed that a user has been uploading a lot of pictures on various articles, (and I think) wrongly claiming copyright on them by using the self tag. I just saw it on Tamil films history, so thought I'd let you know. Cheers. - Cribananda 06:21, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just trying to have fun with Striver

He would probably laugh...he creates these articles simply to be a pain...a kind of adolescent pain...so I added a couple of members so he didn't feel lonely...Striver is a nice person, but a bit misguided...he means well and he is needed on shia muslim articles because sometimes he does get it right there.--MONGO 07:23, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA Question

Sure. Thanks for the comment.

I've been editing and reviewing NYCT articles for a while and have seen I.M. Rich's many contributions throughout them. He has basically started a lot of our best articles. Until those actions, I'd hardly characterize him as a troll. I'd characterize him as someone who does not consider the implications of his statements before he makes them.

All that said, those edits, and particularly the summaries, were very, very unacceptable. I conveyed that in my responses. When I looked at I.M. Rich's edits, I saw things that are socially acceptable within some parts of New York Society, yet wrong for this site (and personally offensive to me). Sadly, comments like that in real life are often made without consideration of their impact. They're often laughed off, but are still ridiculous and innapropriate.

Hindsight is 20/20 and bliss, and I don't agree with my original comment. Certainly a long term block was in order, and, looking back on the situation, I would now support a longer one. I wouldn't, though, support an indefinite ban. IMHO, it has to be reserved for the worst of the worst.

Over however many edits I have, I do admit to having made mistakes, and standing behind him (and admitting I found something he said amusing) so much was definitely one of them. It was wrong and stupid. If I were presented with a similar situation now, I would likely take a much more hard-line approach. If I were an admin, he would most definitely be blocked for a long (but not indefinite) term.

I'd encourage you to look beyond that one situation in forming your RfA opinion, but certainly respect your right to oppose me on its grounds. I totally appreciate you keeping me in the loop. Let me know if you'd like further clarification or want to discuss this further. By the way, you won't get a response for a little bit (sleep). alphaChimp laudare 07:37, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sarcastic and witty, eh? Cheers! I think... Yes, I understand I need to do some heavier contributing, as opposed to just spelling checks and dabbing pages. I would particularly like to contribute to more Indian articles, as some of them are a little sparse and messy. Don't worry about me running for adminship... I wouldn't dream of doing so for at least another year. Well, thank you muchly for your thoughts, and I shall take them into consideration. Have a good one, riana_dzastatceER13:20, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reviewing me!

I'm very grateful for the time you took to review me!! I feel I should address one of your concerns, though, and that is (what else?) the POV Project. That was embarrassing. I was not aware of Striver's other projects and I have now changed my "vote". I'm sure that mistake, although corrected, will haunt me in my future RfA, but there's nothing I can do now but to learn from it and look into a user's contributions very much in depth in a controversial XfD like that one. Thanks for reviewing me and have a great day! Srose (talk) 13:56, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Autostop

Samir, my admiration for your work on updating DYKes notwithstanding, I am sorry to say that accidentally you might have created the lousiest DYK ever. I mean, it's fairly obvious that a song called "Autostop" is about hitchhiking, what else could it be about? If it was, contrary to its title, about washing up or stomach ulcers, it would be some really interesting DYK. The "DYK" thing ehre is that the topic is very unusual for the ESC, where most songs are about love (as in general), world peace and friendship among European nations, current political happenings, or Portugal (in case of most Portuguese entries).

Another interesting DYK fact about Autostop is the appearance of one of both of the Vissi sisters, who both performed in no less than three ESCs each, and five different ESCs in total, and both represented both their home country of Cyprus and the befriended Greece on different occassions. If you could change it to a more DYKish form, I would be grateful, Bravada, talk - 22:11, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The lousiest DYK ever :) Really. It was news to me that autostop meant hitchhiking. The tagline was shortened for space reasons but I can adjust -- Samir धर्म 00:06, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cookie?
I am terribly sorry and ashamed of myself, it is late in the night in Europe now. Autostop has exactly the same meaning in Greek and Polish (my native language) and I just got carried away - seemed overly obvious to me, didn't think much before posting... Please accept my full apology. Would you like a cookie? Bravada, talk - 00:37, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Autostop article

Hi Samir. I'm not sure if this was a conscious decision regarding that DYK, but the original fact was that it was the only ESC entry to mention hitchhiking, rather than just that it was about it. I'm like you in that I probably don't think "Oh, hitchhiking" when I see the word, but there are a number of users who'll think it's an unusual fact as currently listed. BigHaz 23:28, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Was space, and honestly I had no clue that autostop meant auto stop. Fixed now. -- Samir धर्म 00:10, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before I inadvertently do something stupid

Hi Samir, I'm trying to renominate List of persecuted Turkish writers at AfD and I just can't get the third step (the part where you add the template to the bottom of the day's AfD list) to work. Since it's a second nomination, I understand that I need to replace "PageName" with the name of the page and "{second nomination)", but that just doesn't seem to work. It either results in a redlink, my deletion rationale appearing in the AfD above it or the old discussion turning up again. I'm going to stop trying now, since an incomplete nomination which doesn't gum up the system is probably better than an attempted-complete one which does, so if you get the chance can you finish the job for me and let me know what I was doing wrong? Cheers. BigHaz 09:13, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is really wierd. I think there is some small bug. I tried it and got the same problem. The subst:afd3 tag works well in my sandbox. (I used the words "(second nomination)" instead of "2nd nomination"). - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 09:43, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think I have finally figured out what happened. Will clear the mess and relist with your rationale. Will explain afterwards. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 09:45, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I think the problem was that you did not correctly follow all the steps laid out here. As you did not insert {{subst:afd2 | pg=PageName | text=Reason the page should be deleted}} ~~~~ as part of step 2, the "this article's entry" page did not get a subheading ===PageName=== resulting in the nomination merging with the previos nom. Please use the proper subst template next time. When I used the phrase "2nd nomination" in step 3, it resulted in a red-link as you said. I used the phrase "second nomination" and it worked. That may be a bug. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 09:57, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Now I see where the problem was. I was trying everything on that wretched template, but I'd stuffed up earlier than I realised. BigHaz 10:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, thanks for the compliment. I wanted to adapt a colour scheme to match the Anaheim Ducks and I guess it's working.

About the block, this is the confusing part -- I don't remember making any block like that. In fact, I don't think I blocked ANYBODY yesterday as I was out for most of the day. That's very strange. -→Buchanan-Hermit/?! 02:50, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't trolling, I hadn't realised you had discovered that I had already deleted the Barnstar, because there are conversations occuring on two pages simultaneously. By the way, I didnt create that Barnstar, I found it. Javsav 07:57, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Confused

I'm confused and was hoping that you could help. I tagged Image:Chaeyoung.jpg as a repost and it looks like you deleted it by a check of the deletion log, but it also appears to be back but it doesn't show it being uploaded again and my tag is still there. I admit, I am not an expert at dealing with images, but I am really confused and would appreciate an understanding from you of what I am missing. DYK update

Hi, thanks for yet another DYK update, it's great that you find time to do it! As I keep the template on my watchlist due to my contributions, I sometimes help copyedit some suggestions on the talk page. I have noticed that many articles that the users propose for DYK contain free images, but the proposers did not include them with their suggestions. As, for example, there is no image added to the last six suggestions, I was wondering whether it would be of any help to you (and possible other DYK-updating admins) to add possible images wherever applicable. Thanks! I'll take a look at it when I have time. I have a question about the DYK. Venus

Hi, thanks for that. It looks like somebody's removed the article because 70 degrees or so isn't exactly like that on Earth, but it's not that exact. At around 50 - 55 kilometres or so is where the atmosphere is pretty much exactly the same as Earth, so there was no reason for that person to remove the article from the front. Oh, looks like it's been taken care of (Mets501 just wrote me back). I had phrased it such that it looked like the atmosphere was exactly the same when it's just the most similar in the Solar System. It should get put in the next refresh. Mithridates 18:42, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ampulla of Vater

I have moved the Ampulla of Vater back to Hepatopancreatic ampulla for now so it will comply with the current anatomy standard of the Wikipedia Anatomy project. I agree that hepatopancreatic ampulla is not currently used as much as Vater in a clinical setting, but as you said, everyone is fleeing eponyms (for good reason), and in my medical school, only the old lecturers still use that stuff. I think most modern texts have eliminated eponyms (in anatomy). I welcome you to help come up with a policy for naming articles; currently, we (not many of us) use TA but we shy away from the really common names such as Fallopian tubes (i.e. those that have penetrated public knowledge). Perhaps if we can come up with some type of criteria for usage on Pubmed, we should change it back to Vater. Of course, we are always trying to recruit people for the Anatomy project Thanks. GAC

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I've decided that instead of the Colonization of Venus article that I should make atmosphere of Venus into a featured article because of the lack of content for the former. The subject of colonization hasn't been in the spotlight long enough and so there's not a great variety of references. On the other hand, there's a great deal of information on the atmosphere itself and Venus Express is gathering more information all the time so it should be easier. An easier subject to get approved for an FA too (more realistic/substantial) and there can be some notes in the article on feasability of colonization in the atmosphere so everybody wins. Roman villa

In fact, it is not the first time they find roman villas. An older settlement for instanced was destroyed while a motorway was being built. The interesting of it that it was located under the sand of a beach, archaeologists tried to find it as they knew it existed in there, people searching and finding treasures. Consider this, SVP

Samir, while I greatly appreciate your balanced stance on the DYK updating issue, refering to me as a person with HPD is moderately inappropriate in my terms. Regards, Bravada, talk - 12:26, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me then, it sounded to me like that, as your response was below mine. Anyway, referring to ANYBODY like that, even if not meaning that seriously, does not fit in too well with me. But perhaps it's just me.
I am making so much fuss about that because I find it VERY bad practice that a person might just trounce a nomination grumbling that they don't like a topic. I would have never even thought of doing anything like that, and I believe it should be rather significantly discouraged! I would understand nominations failing because they were not "catchy" enough - like 50% of the ESC stuff that got nominated in the past days wasn't that stellar - but not because somebody grumbled about the topic he doesn't like! Even more disturbing is an admin taking action and instructing the Project to LIMIT the activity in this field!
I am going about this over and over again, because I am deeply disturbed with such practices taking place, and I am afraid that if they would pass without a strong reaction from the community, they will become commonplace. I strongly feel this is against the spirit and intended goal of DYK.
Regards, Bravada, talk - 12:38, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sanjeev Nanda

The BMW case was famous in its time and the issue has been brought into limelight again due to the Jessica Lal murder case.[3], [4], [5]. The article is a bit biased because the entire media in India was biased against him. Sentences like "It is widely believed that he had been paid off, and has mysteriously disappeared thereafter" must be toned down to state the facts. The Nanda family section must go though. That has no place in this article. Hope that helps. I have mid-semester exams starting from Monday and will be just checking in daily if I can. As I said earlier, do mail me if anything comes up. I'm not sure why it was needed to reopen the same AfD twice. I'm here to request that its closed again and a new one be opened, and posted to todays log. This was already brought to deletion review by Badlydrawnjeff, and was suggested by me there, that a brand new AfD be opened. If you choose not to, thats ok too. Re: Gavrilov translation on Did You Know...

Thank you for your compliments about the article, however, the phrasing used on Did You know is misleading. The noseclip was a widespread urban legend, and was not actually true, as clearly stated in the article. In my original submission on the Did You Know talk page, I phrased the fact as "..that many believed that voice arists...used a noseclip...", while the current template omits the crucal "many believed" part. I'd like to ask that you update the template to reflect the truthfullness of the statement. Thanks. --Aramգուտանգ 06:51, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that was really quick, and phrased nicely too. Thanks. --Aramգուտանգ 06:54, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bagheera @ DYK

Samir, thanks for choosing the Bagheera for DYK, but you didn't even give me the chance to get a photo for that! Perhaps you could start with some of the older Simca nominations first, and remove the Bagheera for the time being, until I get the pic? Thanks! Bravada, talk - 01:08, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, the photo of the monument of Tsar Alexander is on DYK for the second time in four DAYS! See August 16 - perhaps at that time it was with much less relation to the DYK, but still. This time, you can swap the Bagheera for Ford SAF and let the Vedette shine again in full glory :D Thanks! Bravada, talk - 01:11, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I made these changes for Bravada, hopefully this is okay. I don't really know much about DYK, but I understand Bravada is pretty experienced at it. I think I tied up all the loose ends (protecting and unprotecting the pictures, archiving and such). Thanks, --Interiot 04:34, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm too late... Seems reasonable. Thanks for adjusting things Interiot -- Samir धर्म 06:33, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks anyway for choosing my DYK again :D I am working on the picture for the Bagheera! Bravada, talk - 06:45, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I was quite surprised when I saw the same picture added to a nomination for the second time, but I was just grumbling about grumbling, so I thought there is little chance it will be chosen, as people will surely remember it was on the main page before... :D :D :D
Actually, one thing occured to me now. The Bagheera was marked as DYKed on the talk page, as it was undoubtedly on the DYK for a considerable amount of time, so there is no reason to remove the template. So, what happens when it gets featured again? That's going to be interesting :D Or perhaps it is ineligible for being featured again? :( Bravada, talk - 06:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your note (I've been away for a while). I don't know who re-listed it, or why. However, as you have noted, User:SlimVirgin has decided, based on some combination of misinterpreted evidence and targetting by others, that I should be burned at the stake, or some similar wiki-punishment. I cannot for the life of me see what is incriminating in that page. I have been tempted to actually defend myself, but my research indicates that disagreeing with SlimVirgin, however calmly, is not a wise thing to do, and defending oneself is taken to be evidence of guilt, so for the time being I'll just be quiet. -- Gnetwerker 02:47, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your quick question

Hi Samir, nice question, but one with no right or wrong answer I think. From a quick read of the article it looks as if it is technically in Somaliland, but that is probably a less familiar name to readers than Somalia. But looking at the various crosslinks between the articles, it's easier for the casual reader to arrive at the Somalia article from Somaliland than the other way around. My preference would therefore be to use Somaliland for the link. Either is probably fine though. Hope I haven't confused you :-) Take care. --Cactus.man 07:48, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, but expect ruffled feathers either way, maybe even a lame mini edit war. Something along the lines of The Wrong Version always holds true when there are alternative options I find :-) --Cactus.man 08:06, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BCE

Hello Samir. Why did you change BC to BCE in the article Laas Gaa'l? As an admin' you should be well aware of the policy that the preference of the first major contributor should be respected. This article used BC for era notation all the way from it's creation. It should not have been changed, so I've reverted it. Regards, Arcturus 11:13, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query On 26 August, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article the Robinson family, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Zanimum, I really enjoyed reading this article. I guess I was part of the early part of the television-as-a-babysitter generation, but I never realized how much of a role model a character like Gordon could be. I tweaked the tagline a bit, hope you don't mind. Many thanks for the contribution -- Samir धर्म 06:54, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for tweaking tagline. I had to head somewhere a few minutes before I typed the DYK, and I didn't know what to write, so I just wrote randomness. I agree, it's amazing the thought that went into creating Gordon.
I recently had my pet article, Sesame Street, featured on the main page. Someone linked to an essay on the early years of the show, regarding how the "Commission for Educational Television" in Mississippi was trying to blockade the series from air. That essay, that I had missed until then, provided an amazing look at the series, and how it connected with the civil rights movement. Thanks for selecting the article for DYK! -- Zanimum 13:54, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Samir,

The article Pleasant Productions was speedily deleted A8, but the article is still up on AfD and hasn't been closed. Could you please close it? ColourBurst 05:36, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rosicrucian, I've just closed this early as a redirect, given the issue of notability was the same as discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/S.R. Sidarth. If you disagree with this decision, you are more than welcome to ask for a review at WP:DRV. Many thanks -- Samir धर्म 06:35, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While I was a little frustrated to have it deleted that fast, I really would suggest you undo the merge to George Felix Allen and change the merge to Virginia United States Senate election, 2006#The Macaca/monkey incident to avoid duplicating material, as I recommended in the AfD.--Rosicrucian 06:37, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's reasonable. I'll change it. -- Samir धर्म 06:39, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FAC and FAR/C

Hi Samir

Well, thank you very much for the star, although I'm unsure whether I can keep up the pace. I've been trying to encourage others to take up the mantle in both rooms, with limited success. There are many months of the year when paid work takes me away from WP almost completely (Oct/Nov, Jan/Feb, April, July). Aside from that, I feel that I need a rest from the constant critiqueing, which is like tending a garden: in many cases, you need to return once or twice to assess the progress and write more comments. Otherwise, you turn your head and they've been promoted without satisfying 1a. I'm counting on further gradual changes to the culture here, I guess. Tony 02:23, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Samir, I believe that due to the issue I raised on the article's talk page, it should not be featured at all. Please consider replacing it with another DYK (and adding yet another one, as the template looks quite "empty" on the main page now). Thanks, Bravada, talk - 14:30, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am afraid not, as it just reflects that the article is a half-hearted compromise. This is a controversial issue and I believe it's inclusion in DYK is a bad precedent. See the Macedonia example (and Macedonia-related articles are now cleaned to be NPOV etc.) on Grue's talk page to see my point. I believe such "facts" should not be featured on DYK. Scientific notability guideline

Hey, I noticed that we have notability guidelines on everything from hotels to porn actors, but none on scientific concepts, theories, and terms. I started putting some intitial ideas together at User:Trialsanderrors/SCIENCE and am looking for contributions and feedback now. If this essay can gather some steam we could move it into the WP space and make it an active proposal. There are lots of particulars in debates about scientific topics such as peer-review, citations, impact factor, etc., that editors should be made aware of before they offer an opinion based on the "Google test", and I think it would be a good way to collect all of this in one spot. Let me know if you're interested. Cheers, trialsanderrors 10:30, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Stoneman DYK

Thanks for pulling up the Stoneman article for DYK. I've got a pretty busy Labor Day barbeque lined up this afternoon, but as soon as I get back, I'll try to work on the references section. Thanks again. :) --Antorjal 16:03, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wa 'alaikum Samir,

you really think so? i was thinking maybe it could get up to GA status.. i did read the FA criterion (which i found rather daunting) and thought it didn't really reach a level of "comprehensiveness" which i have seen in other FA articles. i would like to get consensus on the state of the article though because there has been virtually no input about it yet (considering it still is rather new). thank you! Thanks for the Pullitzer. I'm glad that guy passed over (into public domain), and I'm delighted with the replacement. (Didn't want no unfree Nobel anyway...weighed too much anyway, and my neck was getting sore.) Geogre 20:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help!

Hey! I recently joined the CVU with VandalProof. I got hold on a vanity article called Yellow Bird Project created by a user called Yellowbirdproject. I flagged the article for Speedy Delete and a few minutes later, a brand new account called Lua123 removed the tag, so I have reasons to believe it's some sockpuppetry. Anyways, what should I do with the user YPB (that blanks his user page by the way and ignores ALL warnings)? Thanks. --Deenoe 00:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks again Samir! Quick and great answer.. aaaaas usual! --Deenoe 10:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Please do. I haven't heard of him, but that doesn't mean anything when the topic is something like this. The one thing going good for that article is that it was created by a (former) regular editor and not a drive-by one. Tintin (talk) 06:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Hi Samir, can you check this 3RR problem. --Ugur Basak 12:39, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Cheers -- Samir धर्म 12:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I thank you Samir, but this is his 4th 3rr in a week check this case :) Thanks again --Ugur Basak 12:51, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wasn't aware of that one. Might I suggest that, if his editing is grossly not in keeping with consensus, and if he does not discuss at all on the talk page, a better strategy would be a WP:RfC as opposed to 3RR. This would allow more definitive decisions on article content and editing. Thanks -- Samir धर्म 13:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Samir, thanks for your advice. As you say it may be better. I've a question, i guess you mean Request comment on users part. It'll cause some work for me, but i hope it'l be the solution. Thanks --Ugur Basak 18:45, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Folke Bernadotte

Samir, you protected Folke Bernadotte on SpinyNorman's version, which amounts to rewarding his 3RR violation. Would you please consider either unprotecting or at least restoring and protecting the pre-3RR version? Spiny is a troublesome editor who tends to edit by revert, and so it's arguably important not to allow him to profit from the behavior. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk) 12:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not making any comment on SpinyNorman, but I hope you keep the protection on for longer than 24 hours. The same problem is certain to recur immediately. --Zerotalk 14:23, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Samir, the barnstar from you was like a nice samir - a flow of fresh air: yes, your name means perhaps the same! From WP:AN

Copying my reply over FYI:

A very appropriate block. Nscheffey, this was the same user that made an attack userbox against Drini, that has since been deleted. Agree that his behaviour is akin to trolling, and I'm not surprised by the discovery of the socks -- Samir 05:45, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I do not agree that making a Userbox advocating recall of an admin is enough of a personal attack to merit an indefinite block. I think it is a dumb idea that won't advance one's goals, and I agree that such a Userbox should be deleted, but I don't see anything in WP:BLOCK that implies it should result in an indefinite block. I also don't think it is befitting of an admin to inform an editor, with many constructive edits to the encyclopedia, that they are blocked indefinitely in this manner. As to the allegations of sockpuppetry, of which I have seen no evidence, "block first, find reasons later" is not an acceptable policy, nor do I think editors should be blocked for setting off someone's spidey-senses. --Nscheffey(T/C) 06:17, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They're back - I think the last genuine edits were by 220.240.4.90 on 29/8, Can you revert and warn VICE who seems to have done some subtle vandalsing? It might be worth blocking this page. Albatross2147 12:49, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

excessive reverts and personal attacks

Hey Samir, we have a problem over at anarchism. User:Donnachadelong is reverting like mad. He's also doing nasty edit summaries and personal attacks on talk:anarchism. So far today he has already done 17 edits, [8] many of which are reverts of edits that he doesn't like because they don't coincide with his personal idea of anarchism, which is clear POV pushing. He already has been warned for excessive reverts (10 edits at Amnesty International on Sept. 3 [9]), so he's not new at this revert thing. Nor is he a stranger to personal attacks. Please see talk:Amnesty International, and has been warned for that, too. Can you check into this at the anarchism article. Thanks, Samir. Whiskey Rebellion 18:48, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Woohookitty is on the case. I will ensure that the discussion on the Talk:Anarchism page is within reasonable limits. Should edit warring restart on the article, I'd be happy to consider protection -- Samir धर्म 01:43, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"I was gathering information for the Great Kathmandu Page and someone has totally bypassed our agreement and delete the Article!" So we're allowed to make deals like this? I had no idea. I guess I'll stop "following process" in AfD. 1ne 06:58, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i think if clinics, kaiser, and the CDC say its a certain way that is the way to go, and like you yourself dont and cant deny they may are are spread sexually even if its not the most common form of trasision, what about oral sex of the anus, are you counting that as "sex"? since it can be gotten that way, im gonna keep it. any more thoughts? Qrc2006 04:22, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can Hepatitis be transmitted sexually? Yes/No Hep C? Yes/No

the answers are yes, that makes them sexually transmitted diseases whether you like it or not dude, i feel that your very passionate on the subject, so i recomoned mentionthing this in the hep C article and citing your data. however Kaiser and the CDC and SF City Clinic are reputable sources, you have said yourself that its sexually transmittable, it matters not if its rare. it simply is an STD. its even listed as such on the STD category in wp. i will not change it, and i ask you to not also, i have worked very hard on these templates, and do not wish them to be vandalised. Qrc2006 04:35, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Samir, it has been brought to my attention that you may have been offended by by diff calling you a vandal and your edits vandalism. I am sorry if your feeling where hurt as those were not my intentions at all. I do thought find that our edit was was unproductive and perhaps we should dialogue better. If I hurt your fellings I am sorry. I did not mean to, and honestly felt that you were vandaling the page. Qrc2006 05:13, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My feelings are rarely hurt. This is one area that I have particular expertise in. I applaud you for getting involved in medical areas of Wikipedia, but you really shouldn't revert when you have a superficial knowledge of an area. It is also very unwise to revert an administrator's edits with the summary "vandalism". -- Samir धर्म 05:38, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Sethi

You might be interested in Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sumer_Kumar_Sethi, considering you know the researchers/doctors of the field well enough, and that it is slightly related to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mariano Anto Bruno Mascarenhas. Thanks. --Ragib 08:19, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He is not just a researcher. He is an Indian author. That means he not just writes articles, but also books _Doctor Bruno__Talk_/E Mail 09:07, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My point of contention is that the fact that he is an author was completely missed in the AFD. Also please note that ALL the (only) four votes for deletion is based on the fact that he has written only one article. There was no discussion about the books. You can delete ANY article if you are arguing on the WRONG basis. This is my opinion. Doctor Bruno_Talk_/E Mail 09:21, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AFD

I will summarise the votes

  • Strong delete: Wikipedia is not a resume or publication list. There are perhaps thousands of other medical researchers with similar publications, nothing shows why this person is any more notable than them.
An article can be written about them also. Just because one researcher does not have an article, it is not an excuse for deleting article about every researcher. Also he is not some one who has published one paper (read by 10 people). He has written half a dozen books read by thousands of Doctors. The above opinion does not take into fact that he has written books. To answer the question, nothing shows why this person is any more notable than them, the answer is he has written books that have been published and well received and well known in India Doctor Bruno 07:40, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong delete. Notability not established. PubMed does not reveal any major publications in major journals. Does not establish quality or quantity nor can it be verified at PubMed. No Cell, Nature, Science, New England Journal, or even 2nd-tier publications. No established review of this individual in newspapers. ONLY ONE ORIGINAL PAPER.
Again this is about the Researcher and not author
  • Strong delete - only one paper.
Yeah, but what about the books
  • I think the quality of the work is under question. I don't believe that writing a review is evidence of "significant or well-known academic work".
His book was titled Review of Radiology It is not a review for "Radiology". A wrong opinion without going into facts. THe fact that it is a well known academic work can be appreciated by doctors in India and not by some one who has not even seen the book (and assumes wrongly)

Now coming to the points why the subject was notable Wikipedia:Notability (doctors) 3. The person has published a large quantity of academic work (of at least reasonable quality). 4. The person has published a significant or well-known academic work. ("Review of Radiology" now in the third edition) 9. The person has received a notable award or honor, or has been often nominated for them. (award for medical blog) Wikipedia:Notability (books) 2. The book is by a bestselling or otherwise notable author. 6. The book has been the subject[3] of multiple, independent, non-trivial[4] reviews. 7. The book has been the subject[3] of multiple, non-trivial[4] published works whose sources are independent of the book itself.

I hope my point is taken. I (as the creator of the article) am not going to ask for a review. If you wish, (if you feel so after reading the points) you can do that, or if any one else reading this page can ask for a review WP:DRV, I can put my points over there Doctor Bruno_Talk_/E Mail 09:49, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Small point. I deleted the article. Why would I ask for a WP:DRV? As the creator of the article, you're more than welcome to ask for one -- Samir धर्म 09:56, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
