on being 'vague'

Being vague has it's time and place, but an encyclopedia isn't that time or place. If you read the article you could see that only one feature of OS X is being criticized; saying 'some' isn't being vague, it's a distortion of the truth. Big difference. Duke53 | Talk 22:27, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Re: AMA request on "Richard Kiley" vandalism

While the vandal appears to have grown bored with his game, and the spurious reference to "Requiem for a Martian" has not reappeared, I'm not quite ready to close the case. Maybe in a week.

I noticed that the "Columbus Day" article has a lock against modification by anonymous or new users. If the problem with the Kiley article reappears, that might be the solution, as it would force the vandal out of hiding. Whom would I contact about that? -- JHHL "Hbquikcomjamesl"

GUS to UM

At the end of the day, I think it's been a good thing. It's much less confusing to people who stumble across it. It's also more expressive of what the "solution" actually is focused on. And it made some disgruntled people happy at a very low cost. The discussion from this point forward can be more narrowly focused on the "what to migrate" and "how to migrate" questions, rather than on whether migration makes sense. At the same time, I do support efforts to come up with an official policy, but am not hopeful that there can be consensus because the spectrum in the essay is almost fully populated, so you get something like the Knesset trying to agree on what to do with/for/about the Arabs. --NThurston 13:35, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

AMA case

Hello there! Thank you for helping me out -- I'm a needy newbie ;-) I have one very basic question: Do I have to to represent my 'client's' side of the argument only, or can I find a happy medium to make both parties agree? I'm just wondering, because the case I'm working on now might actually be better of with the the solution my client doesn't want. I can argue his case, but should my personal opinion come into this? Wikipedia for EMR

I was out of town and then i was sick over the last few weeks, so I was unable to respond to the case I opened for undeleting the EMR wikipedia. I would still like to do that, but I'm not clear at all who to go about doing it. We feel that it's appropriate for Wikipedia, just like Marathon is, because it has it's own unique world and storyline, complete with characters, weapons, and more. We would really like to see it brought back. What do I need to do?

further help with image

Well the name of the image is MSflower.jpg but what I don't understand is how that image is supposed to get from the website it's hosted on to the wikipedia site unless I put in the address somewhere. My edit to natural selection

I didnt make any vandalism on the natural selection article. All I did was add the weasel word template. I forgot how to add it so it took me a few times to get it right. Please think before you warn. My first try was weaselwords, then wesael words, but the correct tempelate was weasel. RE:Canadian identity

If you thought that I had asked you not to edit the article, then I guess I wasn't clear. It's okay if your editing the article, heck we probably could use someone who doesn't live in Canada to copyedit the thing. It's sometimes hard to separate one's self from what's POV and what's not when you live there. If there's more editorials, keep removing! Oh, no, I didn't take anything negative from what you said. I just didn't want to seem pushy about editing a Canadian article considering that I am American. I've spent hours on the Anti-Americanism article and I guess I have my guard up. haha

I will say that I think the Canadian article would be much more professional and celebratory of Canadians if it just focused on Canada and all its glory and just pretend for the moment the US is not there! ;o)

Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Unconstructive edits?

Hi. You left a message on my talk page today about posting "unconstructive edits". From my edit history, I only made one edit today, which was to revert Quebec to the previous version, as it was entirely blank, and just a stub notice when I visited it earlier today. I see you are requesting to be reviewed in your signature. I read this excellent and recent statement from you at that editor review:

“ My way of dealing with conflict is to ask questions, why is it happening. I'm not a person that will go "I'm right, and everyone else is wrong". ”

It really is a good statement, and I would happily encourage others to follow it.

You will see the quote from the policy that you claimed to be following explicitly contradicts you, using "an", not "the", meaning that yes, we can link to multiple official pages. I agree with you that 12 would be excessive, but there aren't 12. It is a sufficiently long and comprehensive article that it is not close to becoming a link farm. It has a total of 6 External links, while today's Wikipedia:Featured Article, Jaws (film) has 10.

Whether removal of an official site link in clear contradiction to policy that you explicitly refer to in your removal comment is vandalism or not is at least debatable. But I will say that your response does read as a bit of a contradiction to your truly admirable editor review statement. I don't see a single question in your response, while I do see "I wouldn't ... we can't ..." which does seem to be two assertions that you are right, and I am wrong. Geez, that was stupid of me. I was in a bit of a rush, and was a little annoyed at people who think that IAR is a reasonable keep reason. I have finally went and took a look at the mailing list also from yesterday (which I didn't do before), and saw a discussion on WP:RS, among other things. But, I stupidly jumped to "I'm right and your wrong" like I said I wouldn't. I should have stepped away for a couple minutes, and it's good someone actually asked me what I was doing. Although, while looking through transclusions of {{myspace}} (how I found that), I did find some links to myspace that were blatent advertisments. So, I guess the right thing now is to ask for consensus of people, and not single-handidly do something like deleting all transclusions (unless of course it's a link to "the unofficial myspace fansite for _insertartisthere_" or "Bob's page" or a full page ad). -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk·Review Me!) 23:08, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I'd be happy to give you a copy of ShadowTool! I'm not entirely sure of the situation with Perl on Macs, but if you'd like to give it a go, you're more than welcome to. The only thing that I'm worried about is Firefox, since that's what ShadowTool uses to load edits, but, other than that, I think it should work fairly well. Many images on Wikipedia are mistagged. Only the copyright holder can authorize a derivative work of a copyrighted work, so if you copy and paste a picture out of someone else's document, edit someone else's photo, etc, that doesn't give you rights to it and the resulting work is not available to Wikipedia under a free license. That is why I changed the tag on Image:Worlds-Smallest-Political-Quiz.PNG to a "fair use" tag - it is not free. The original uploader reverted it back, asserting permission. I have left a message on his/her talk page explaining derivative works and asking if, in fact, the original copyright holder has authorized this derivative work and released it under the license that was selected. The new image is not quite as straight forward. Facts are public domain, so I would be inclined to think that this image is ok to use. (I'd strongly suggest getting the parody tag off of there, though.) Others may disagree, though, and consider this to be a derivative work of the original image. BigDT 00:15, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Department Store Vandal

Hi there. You delisted my request for intervention against 72.82.212.127 (Talk), saying in your edit summary, "rm the 3 IP's, none had more than 2 warnings/haven't vandalized again...".

Please look again at the talk page of this anonymous user. He/she has indeed gotten all four official warnings (from two different editors) and even an unofficial warning from a newbie user. He/she vandalizes the article several times a day pretty much every day. In fact he/she is vandalizing the article as I write this!

Barbara Biggs

Dear Royalguard, My name is Barbara Biggs. I appear to hve been blocked from Wikipedia in a process I find confronting. I innocently wrote my own entry, only to find it contravened WP guidelines. I emailed what I had written to the friend who suggested I make an entry, saying that it was too difficult and that I had lived without a WP entry for this long and could continue to survive without it now! He then posted a version to the site without telling me. This version has since been the subject of what I consider to be a strange process. All but one person has suggested the article should be kept, since notability is clear. I and the one person who has voted for a speedy delete, Alan, have had coridal discussions about teaching me how to edit articles and source them. There are many about child sexual abuse which I, as a person who volunteers much of my time to this field, read as rubbish and highjacked by a particular extremist group. Then I discovered, just today, a discussion on Alan's page (being unable to access my own, since my username appears, as a result of this? to have been removed or made inaccessible, I went in to Alan's page to ask why). He and another guy, who, btw, has a keep recommendation on my article, saying I've been disobedient in continuing to edit my own article. I haven't edited my own article except to change typos and add sources. I may have done this a lot, since I didn't know about the show preview function, so each time I made a minor change, people may have thought it was a major one. Once it was putting in an apostrophe, another time changing a typo. As I pointed out to Alan and the other user, many of the sources I have found don't come up on a google search because they're too old (even only a couple of years old can be too old in this environment). I am the only person who knows who has interviewd me and where, therefore I was able to find sources that others would have had no hope finding because they wouldn't know where to look. I have added these sources. Now I read that doing this is a violation of WP policy. I have lived my life not waiting for others to fix problems. Had I waited for others to source the material, I would still be waiting. Another user with a strong keep tag on the discussion page, sent me a recent article in the Washington Post about WP's inexplicable handling of notability and it's delete policy. This was not positive for WP media profile, especially having been published in such a well respected publication. This seems to me like an enormous amount of time and effort I have put into this, about a fairly innocuous article, that, as one user has pointed out, when read could have been written by anyone. Are people having control issues here? This has put me off WP, helping out with changing some of the outright rubbish I have read on it (See unsourced opinions and claims on Recovered Memory Therapy, The Courage to Heal, Satanic Ritual Abuse and many more - all, in my opinion, highjacked by the recovered memory movement which most professionals in the field believe is fuelled by people who have either been accused of child sexual abuse or have a loved one who has been). If you want people like me to have a positive experience with WP and continue to be involved to help clean up such articles, as Alan has suggested, it does not serve the purpose to make such heavy work of what should have been a fairly straight forward process. Finally, I have asked if someone can rewrite my article if it's a problem. No-one has taken up the offer. Could you check Eraye1 Edits? He is editing Japanese articles with out of context links to Unit 731. Some times just changing one or two words, sometimes hadding whole phrases that are our of context and are obviously personal coments (stuff like "However, the Japanese desesrved it by their deeds in World War 2. Unit 731" in the North Korean abducting Japanese people article), and some times, jsut simply dropping links out of place to the Unit 731 article. He is obviously in some sort of anti-Japanese agenda, and I'd have edited all his comments (I only edited 2) but he seems to have been a little active this last couple of days, and I lack the wikipedia edit knowledge to skillfully revert what he did. I was looking arround for some sort of form to report his actions to some sort of mod, but they all seem too severe, with complicated proceedings (is he considered a vandal??). Well that is odd. Hrm. You shouldn't need anything special to run the app. The only thing I can think of is maybe the older version's preferences are bugging the new version. Try deleting ~/Library/Application Support/WikiGuard and then running the app again. That should clear out whatever the previous versions set. *shrugs* If that doesn't work, then I'm not really sure what would be causing the issue. --Brad Beattie (talk) 02:10, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Oddities in Egypt's Article

I am not sure you are the right person to inform about this, but I shall nonetheless. While surfing wikipedia, I stumbled upon strange information on Egypt's article, at the end of the first paragraph, it read "Egypt is loated on the eastern coast of Canada and the main language is english. Many people walk around naked.", this doesn't seem to be right (yes, "located" is mis-spelled). Here 's a screenshot I took, regarding the malicous edit.

I would ask that if anyone requests to unprotect the Gerald Ford article, you would please leave the semi-protection in place at least for a few weeks after his final funeral. I know it's not a vote and tha the required 5 days for an AFD to run have passed, but as the discussion is still very active and no consensus is reached at all I don't think you should push your own opinion and delete them all and ignore the opinions of most people who gave their saying in this subject. You have put reasons at the top of the AFD to delete them, I have put reasons in the discussion to keep them. That doesn't mean you already have to delete them. Why did you delete them per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/FA Premier League 2006-07 goalscorers like said in the deletion summary given with the deleted articles. But to me (I can't talk for others) this kind of information is there to describe an event, to inform others what has happened in a certain event that they are interested in. It's not an overkill of information, but just a split-off from the original competition articles to reduce the size of these pages. The information like this can be found nowhere else on the internet, at least not in this form. There was not just the "it's useful and I like it" arguments to keep this up and running. Goalscorers articles

Where and when was the "delete all" consensus reached, huh? Simply because it is a list it doesn't mean that it should be deleted. There are hundreds of lists in Wikipedia that are not deleted. Those articles were not an indiscriminate colelction of information. Simply because some admins that don't care about how it helps some people and for some reason find it "unnnecessary" want to delete them. I want to know where it was decided and who decided it, because I can't see a place where it was decided, at least not in the article's entry for deletition. This case clearly shows that Wikipedia is solely run by admins and if you're not an admin you don't get your point across and in the end of any discussion, if you're an admin, you win.190.40.185.235 14:21, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for inadvertently violating the 3 revert rule... (I only reverted User6895 three times and forgot I had reverted some random ip weirdo vandalism/edit once already.)

The text in question has been present for several monthes... I reverted the removal, reverted the removal again and gave discussion on talk page (and requested a discussion before more reverts) Without waiting for another response by other people, User6985 reverted again. Out of curiosity, what is the proper forum to deal with these semi-minor disputes in wikipedia policy? Leave a note on discussion of an editor? Let the incorrect change stand and wait for more talk page discussion? (Leaving a note on protection page or opening an moderation request seems excessively major...) Thanks for the quick semi-protection on the University of Alabama athletics page. Those fans are rabid down here, maybe even worse than Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs rivalry fans. BTW, I'm the P.A. announcer for a high school basketball team down here in Birmingham, Alabama, and I freaked out a referee the other night when I played a certain bit of music. "Is that what I think it is?" he asked. "It depends. Where are you from?" I replied. "I lived in Windsor, Ontario for a number of years," he said.
