Hola and welcome on wikipedia Pilaf. You have uploaded some pictures on wikipedia but they are generally big (by size and by kib) would you consider to scale them to fit on a 150Kib max ? everyone doen't get a super ADSL connection. Cheers, Chmouel 16:11, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Wikijunior

[edit]

I read your message on the Spanish Wikipedia asking for photos of South America. I live in Argentina, but sadly I don't own a camera yet and probably won't anytime before the first issue of Wikijunior gets ready. I do, however, have a few very nice photos of Bolivia and north of Argentina taken by a friend of mine in a recent trip. A few of them are already uploaded to Wikipedia and you can see them here. The ones of the statue of Che Guevara might be a little too political for the project, but I'm sure you'll like the ones from the Cerro de Siete Colores and perhaps there could be an use for those of the kid. I can upload more pictures if you find them worthy. Please reply. Pilaf 03:19, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Those are fantastic, thank you for them. I'm posting links to them on the project page right now. -- user:zanimum

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

OR

Option 2
I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions to any [[U.S. state]], county, or city article as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" with "{{MultiLicensePD}}". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Please change:

to

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=User:Pilaf/livepreview.js  ...

in order to make the code work for Wikipedians on all language domains! cheers --Ollinaie 02:00, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC) http://de.wiki.x.io/wiki/Benutzer_Diskussion:Ollinaie

Openly editable JavaScript is a security risk

[edit]

Hi Pilaf,

much as I like your Live Preview, we cannot keep it in operation as it is currently used. Because livepreview.js is openly editable, it can be used by malicious people to insert code that does nasty things like stealing session cookies. I have protected the page for now. You can do the following:

  1. Try to make livepreview.js part of the official MediaWiki codebase. I find this relatively unlikely because of the limited usefulness due to no template transclusion, no link checking etc., and the fact there's a pretty cool live preview feature using XmlHttpRequest already in CVS.
  2. Ask a sysop to make code updates for you.
  3. Become a sysop and do it yourself.
  4. Modify the instructions so that all code is in the user's protected Monobook.js.

I have also added a warning to the Live Preview pages that using this code means that people are implicitly trusting you not to do bad things.--Eloquence* 02:37, Mar 12, 2005 (UTC)

Live Preview Source?

[edit]

I notice that the source for livepreview seems to be "packed", is there an "unpacked" version. Failing that, is there a way to unpack it? Also, have you thought about specifying a licence for the code. Will it be under the GFDL (which isn't really made for programs) or perhaps GPL/GFDL?

I ask because I think that a modified form of Live Preview might be useful as part of a wikitext->HTML converter (for offline content). For instance, generated HTML is much bigger than wikitext, so storing data as wikitext on a local drive (or CD) and converting it on-demand to HTML (that could be formatted for the specific browser being used) might be more space-efficient than pre-generating the HTML with other programs (which are few and far between as it is).

Thanks,
Andymadigan 18:16, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

LivePreview problem

[edit]

I was having a problem with complex wikilinks, and I can't reproduce it right now. I was using the pipe trick, and the link included a section marker and parentheses, like:

[[foo (bar)#section|]]

What happened was that the LivePreview text simply cut out at the offending link. When I re-discover what the link was that gave me the problem I'll let you know: this is just a heads-up. --Phil | Talk 11:23, Apr 28, 2005 (UTC)

Pic of the day

[edit]

Hi Pilaf,

Just to let you know that your photograph Image:Che Guevara statue closeup.jpg is up for reuse as Pic of the Day on the 9th May. I've used the same caption as last time, but you can check and update it at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/May 9, 2005. Also the photo credit is currently 'Augusto Starita', but if this is yourself, would you rather it was a link to your user page, which is what we normally do for photos by Wikipedians. -- Solipsist 06:10, 5 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
Same question here. Pilaf could you give an URL link to the website of Augusto or could you ask him to send you a mail ? Then you will just have to copy/past the authorization of your friend (don't forget the header of the mail). Thx --Patricia.fidi 14:14, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Live Preview - still working on it?

[edit]

I noticed on Eloquence's talk page you said that you were not working on Live Preview anymore. I've provided some patches for a few small fixes (i.e. the Date problem, switching alt-p to go to live preview, etc.) I hope you will incorporate them. What other, better, Wikicode parser had you heard of? (The 1.5 Live Preview feature still connects to the servers, and is disabled, anyway). Thanks for your great work. JesseW 19:34, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, due to a request/question at the Help desk, I created a stand-alone wiki syntax previewer using Live Preview. My work was really simple, I just set up a text field and plugged Live Preview into that, and it works without requiring internet access. The file is available for download here (name it 'preview.html' or similar). Just wanted you to know, and to thank you for the work on Live Preview. — Sverdrup 00:58, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Use Live Preview with an external editor.

[edit]

Hello Pilav

thanks for writing Live Preview. I installed it successfully using the internal Wiki Editor. However I prefer to use an external editor, (X)emacs and I to this by using the ee-helper perl script. Then it seems that live preview does not work. Is there any possibility to have Live Preview in that setting? Should I contact Erik Moeller the author of that script?

Thanks

Live preview

[edit]

Hi Pilaf. I use LivePreview and find it very helpful. I have a remark though. I wonder why the button for LivePreview shows up several lines down from the usual preview button (below the list of templates used in this article). Is it possible for it to show up right next to the usual preview button? If that's not possible, it's OK, I am just wondering. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 02:14, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hola Pilaf!

[edit]

Hola Pilaf! You once sent me a message on the Spanish wikipedia. No estoy seguro si te conteste, si no lo hice, perdoname. Now I say hi to you here.

Ive been busy writing a LOT about Hispanics, mainly actually about Argentines lately. That may have been the reason I haven't answered you. But anyways, I am engulfed watching a certain Argentine show now that I get Telefe at home, it's called "Chiquititas", arguably the best show Ive seen since Sex and the City!. For real, I love that show's stories. Ive also written about Buena Fortuna, Agustina Cherri, Romina Yan, Maria Jimena Piccolo, Los Roldan, Facundo Arana, and, although he wasn't Argentine, he was well loved in Argentina, Mr. Kid Charol.

I hope to hear from you soon! I hope you accept my apology! Que Dios bless you!

Sinceramente, your wiki-friend, Antonio Rockofella Martin

JavaScript editing enhancer

[edit]

Hi Pilaf,

please have a look at User:Cacycle/editor for my editor script that adds extended editing functions to the Wikipedia edit pages. Currently it works only for Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla, and Mozilla SeaMonkey browsers. Features include regular expression search and replace, server-independent Show preview and Show changes, one-click fixing of common mistakes, and undo/redo. The script uses your Live Preview.

Simplify Live preview

[edit]

I believe you can simplify live preview by changing:

function LivePreviewInstall()
{
 copywarn = document.getElementById('editpage-copywarn');
 if (copywarn != null) {
  var cleaner = "<br style=\\'clear:both;\\' />";
  LivePreviewHTML = '<input type="button" value="Live Preview" onclick="document.getElementById(\'PreviewBox\').innerHTML = wiki2html(editform.wpTextbox1.value) + \'' + cleaner + '\';" />';
  //LivePreviewHTML = '<input type="button" value="Live Preview" onclick="document.getElementById(\'PreviewBox\').innerHTML = wiki2html(editform.wpTextbox1.value);" />';
  LivePreviewHTML += '<div style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px; padding: 5px; border: 3px double orange;" id="PreviewBox"></div>';
  copywarn.innerHTML = LivePreviewHTML + copywarn.innerHTML;
 }
}

into

addOnloadHook(function () {
    copywarn = document.getElementById('editpage-copywarn');
    if (copywarn != null) {
        var cleaner = "<br style=\\'clear:both;\\' />";
        LivePreviewHTML = '<input type="button" value="Live Preview" onclick="document.getElementById(\'PreviewBox\').innerHTML = wiki2html(editform.wpTextbox1.value) + \'' + cleaner + '\';" />';
        //LivePreviewHTML = '<input type="button" value="Live Preview" onclick="document.getElementById(\'PreviewBox\').innerHTML = wiki2html(editform.wpTextbox1.value);" />';
        LivePreviewHTML += '<div style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px; padding: 5px; border: 3px double orange;" id="PreviewBox"></div>';
        copywarn.innerHTML = LivePreviewHTML + copywarn.innerHTML;
    }
});

Then people who want to use it don't need to add the window.onload = Main; stuff. I believe it would be backwards compatible for those who already have it, too, but you're the javascript expert... :-) — Omegatron 01:45, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Livepreview bug

[edit]

Hi Pilaf, I think I've found a bug in the excellent Live Preview script. This wikitext is the top of Singular they

  wiki2html("'''Singular ''they''''', sometimes called '''epicene ''they''''', is the usage")

and it gives the output

<p><em>'Singular </em>they<strong><em>, sometimes called </em>'epicene <em>they</strong></em>, is the usage

which isn't quite right. I tried to fix it, but I broke other things :-) Lupin|talk|popups 23:54, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki resolution

[edit]

Hi Pilaf,

Do you still work on the popup viewer? How hard would it be to make it preview interwiki links? This way i can hover the mouse over interwiki language links and preview foreign language pages without clicking on them. What would be even greater is that i will be able to generate pages of interwiki conflicts and the user will easily be able to browse pages by moving their mouse. Thanks!

InstaView previews % and ? incorrectly

InstaView templates support.

[edit]

I've created simple templates preview via hidden iframe. Though the realization still has narrow places (see possible bugs below), but it does convert {{..}} to span element, that can be replaced with template's data. I believe, that these restrictions are temporary.

All we have to do is to add 1 function to InstaView.js:

InstaView.loadTemplate = function(tplName)
{

 function el(aID)
  {
  return (document.getElementById) ? document.getElementById(aID)
          : (document.layers) ? document.layers[aID] : document.all[aID];
  }

var iframe;

if  ! ( iframe = el('InstaFrame') )
  {

  iframe = document.createElement('iframe');
  iframe.id = 'InstaFrame';
  iframe.style.display = 'none';

  var Preview = document.getElementById('wpPreview');
  Preview.parentNode.insertBefore(iframe, Preview);

  }

  iframe.onload = function () {
  	el( 'Template:' + tplName).innerHTML =

  		InstaView.convert(this.contentDocument.documentElement.innerHTML.
  		replace(RegExp('.*?<body><pre>(.*?)</' + 'pre></body>.*?', 'gi') , "$1")
  		//.replace(/\{\{\{(.*?)\}\}\}/g , "$1")
  	) .
  	replace(/^<p>(?!<br>)(.*?)/i , "$1")
  }

  //!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fix IE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  iframe.src = '/index.php/Template:' + tplName + '?action=raw&ctype=text/css';

}

and extend parse_inline_wiki() function with

// Templates {..}
replace(/\{\{(.*?)\}\}/g, "<span id='Template:$1' style='background-color: yellow' title='Template:$1'>Template <i>'$1'</i> is used here. <a href='javascript:InstaView.loadTemplate(\"$1\");'>Load it?</a></span>" ).

My demo variant is available at User:Pilaf/InstaView/Devel.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Known bugs and wishes

[edit]
  • !!! IE dosn't support action=raw pages !!!
  • the parameters of template aren't held yet
  • all messages must be customizable (for locale)
  • iframe.src can be different then "/index.php/"

InstaView v. 0.6.2

[edit]

I can't write you an e-mail, so I have the only way to write a message to you here...

I've made some changes to InstaView source and added some functions. So now it fully suports pre and nowiki tags, besides IV's output became almost (X)HTML valid (must be tested though). The list of changes and the source code itself can be found at devel page. I've removed the template support due to it's limitations. It will be back in the next release - with the full support for variables, ParserFunctions, Magic Words and noinclude/includeonly tags!

PS: Btw, what way of IV's development is better from your point of view: separate project of extending the 0.6.x branch? And where source code must be stored: here or m:InstaView/InstaView.js?

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Noir Fleurir, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. File permission problem with File:Child eyes.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Child eyes.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MorganKevinJ(talk) 20:19, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Stories Project

[edit]

Aloha!

My name is Victor and I work with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. We're chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade new people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I find stories that drive our annual fundraising efforts. It's important to convey the incredible diversity of people who've come to rely upon Wikipedia every day.

I'd really like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia.

I will be in Buenos Aires from the 10th - 11th of March 2012.

I'm hoping you will elaborate on your story with me. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project!

Thank you,

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:19, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. DEFLOWER listed at Redirects for discussion

[edit]

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect DEFLOWER. Since you had some involvement with the DEFLOWER redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. BDD (talk) 21:35, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:Buenos Aires political map.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, low quality, superseded by File:Map of the barrios of Buenos Aires.png.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 04:31, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
