Deam Lake Dam and Hope Mills Dam
I am working on Deam Lake State Recreation Area. The park is centered around Deam Lake which is held back by Deam Lake Dam. I know you are a dam expert, that has been on a roll lately. Do you have any information on this dam to pass along? Or would you like to write the article yourself? Either way is fine with me. Also there's a good bit of news regarding Hope Mills Dam. I could pass it along to you. We just had a big rainstorm and I am surprised the dam didn't fall in. Dincher (talk) 22:54, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
- The are still monitoring the dam. Whatever that's supposed to mean. Basically what's going on is that the creek us flowing under the dam and under the spillway, all of which is built on sand. They've discussed tearing out part of the dam and spillway to allow the creek to pass through. Right now it's a major SNAFU. Thanks for the help on Deam. It's turning into quite the project.Dincher (talk) 13:11, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking. If you hit a wall and don't feel like climbing it or knocking it over, don't worry about it. It's up to you.Dincher (talk) 22:15, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Conventional or run-of-river
Hi, Norty. Here's a link you should bookmark if you need whatHydro-Québec considers run-of-river and conventional. I know you found your answer for Jean-Lesage generating station, but I hope it is helpful nevertheless. Bouchecl (talk) 04:11, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks! That was the exact reference I found it on. I am going to try to add the rest to the r-o-r list later.--NortyNort (Holla) 04:29, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Dams in Japan's Prefectures
Hi! Funny you should bring this up as I was only thinking about resuming this project. I could certainly use your help. I can copy the names of the dams into the templates from the commons. The idea was to eventually cover each dam by prefecture. The missing templates are located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Dam templates. The commons cat links are there to copy the dam names from the commons and then remove it like this. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:35, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
If you use google translate on Japanese wikipedia you can work out the basic data what is what in the infoboxes which is helpful. I'll start filling these templates with red links and create the remaining. I'll stub as many as I can later then..♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:05, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
The biggest so far is Template:Dams in Nagano Prefecture. Might be a good place to staart...♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:29, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Templates have now been red linked see Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Dam templates.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:04, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Robert-Bourassa generating station
Hello, I was rummaging through the WP:Dams "Top" importance articles and saw Robert-Bourassa generating station in there. I understand completely why the power station is of high importance, but I am not sure why the dam(s) are. I was thinking more along the lines of "High". Given, the article is also about the station in particular. Maybe I am wrong, if so let me know. I didn't want to change anything without asking you first. Thanks.--NortyNort (Holla)12:14, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
- I've added a few stats in the infobox to gauge the importance. Missing are the 29 dikes built north and south of the main dam. Its a big one. I really should write (re-write) Robert-Bourassa, LG-3, LG-4 and James Bay Project... Bouchecl (talk) 15:29, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
- Good point, I am not terribly familiar with that project. Well, the dam isn't only big, but it supports two large power stations, one of which is the largest in the country. The reservoir is also gigantic, near top ten by volume in the world. The array of dams makes it quite a project and it was probably quite an undertaking, especially being where it is. I will help you out in an expansion if you need it. By the way, what are the largest and tallest dams in Canada?--NortyNort (Holla) 22:52, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
- You know what? I never checked! Dams are probably taller in British Columbia, reservoirs are larger in Quebec. It's a more difficult job than it seems at first glance, since BC Hydro doesn't release that information anymore (terrrrrrarist threat or something like that). That leaves libraries as the main source of information. The local university has a good collection of past BC Hydro, Manitoba Hydro annual reports. The information is probably right there. I'm going to have to take a look at it sooner or later. :) Bouchecl (talk) 23:48, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Know anyone doing peer review?
Just wondering... Do you know anyone who does peer review for GA status on energy-related topics? I haveHydro-Québec (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), the translation adaptation of my French FA (fr:Hydro-Québec) sitting there for months doing nothing. May be a bit on the long side at 150K (too exhaustive is considered "satisfactory" on fr:) and full of stylistic errors, but it's pretty good . Bouchecl (talk) 00:07, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't see it listed at WP:PR or WP:GAN. Where did you list it? I am not sure who would peer review it, I can proof read it during this week for you but I don't have time for a full review of the sources, etc. It is long yes which isn't a bad thing. Also, GA Review was overloaded with WikiCup related nominations as well, which won't clear up until the end of the month.--NortyNort (Holla) 00:31, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not too familiar with the exact process, that's why (never been involved in a GA review yet). I'll register it next week after your quick (and thankfully accepted) proof reading! Bouchecl (talk) 01:31, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, it took me almost two hours to proof-read but I am done. Great article, no spelling errors and just minor little fixes. I didn't see any big prose problems as well. It is a long article but is 58,798 characters w/ spaces, so still below the 65k limit. I didn't rummage through the sources but think you should shoot for a FA. It is a very thorough and detailed article. The author definitely appears to be a huge fan of Hydro-Quebec. I had a few comments I didn't address with edits. 1) With the Canadian dollar markings, I think using $C would be best instead of having the disclaimer on the page. Its usage in "Financial results" is also inconsistent and I saw just "dollars" in one section. 2) When you mention their divisions like Hydro-Québec Distribution, you italicize some of the time. I noticed it was just more than the initial mention sometimes. 3) In "International ventures", the second to last paragraph begins with "The same year," which confused me because the preceding paragraph end with "...the following year", so I wasn't sure exactly what year. 4) Some paragraphs in sections had no citation. Side note: $100 a month energy bills!! You should see the ConEd bills for southern New York and it rarely gets below 0 degrees. If it weren't so cold in Canada, maybe I'd move there for that reason alone. Go hydro, its the future!--NortyNort (Holla) 12:56, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the review and sorry for the delay. I saw your edits on the article yesterday and I was quite anxious to read your comments. I never thought you would leave your comments here.
- On the dollar issue: that's an edit I made two days ago because I was looking at every way possible to trim the size. I will go back to $C. Any pointers on reducing the size of this beast? The article is a bit slow to load at times.
- Italics and International ventures: good points. I'll keep italics for the first mention and rewrite the sentences you pointed out.
- Citations: Yeah. I noticed that too while editing the article offline to change the citation style to {{harvnb}} for books and journals (primarily because of my heavy use of their annual report for facts and figures: it's used 27 times)
- Mainly positive tone of the article. Do you think it will become an issue? How should I deal with it?
- One extra issue? The MOS is not too clear about spelling out or abbreviating units (there is a lot of megawatts in there). What's your preference?
- Thanks again for the spellcheck and comments. It will be very useful. Bouchecl (talk) 23:02, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- This is where the convo started, so I thought i'd leave them here. I can move them to a peer review in the future or to the article's talk page if you want. As far as the article's tone, I don't think it is very positive. You cite the environmental problems and controversies and don't use weasel words in the article. One example in Environment though, "Since the early 1970s, Hydro-Québec has been aware of the environmental externalities of its operations." would read better and more neutral as "Such impacts on the environment has forced Hydro-Québec since the 1970s to..." By the way, "Hayeur 2001" appears to lack a work citation in the references. With megawatts, I usually just put MW but I guess it would be good to spell it out at least once in each main section or every couple of browser panes.--NortyNort (Holla)11:08, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
- Re-reading this section a year after the fact makes me want to strengthen it. Basically, it is sub-standard compared to the rest of the article. I decided to collect new material, and a substantial rewrite in the coming days. Thanks again for pointing this section out. Bouchecl (talk) 19:12, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi NortyNort. The discussions on the implementation of {{Infobox power station (temp)}} has sort of stalled. If you get the time, please see my [1] to TGCP, and let me know if you think the basic merge support is good enough. Kind regards.Rehman(+) 07:48, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, I responded at the relevant discussion.--NortyNort (Holla) 09:18, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Reason I went to RFC is because TFD says "On this page, deletion of templates [...] is discussed", in the first line. Do you think we should still list anyway? Rehman(+) 11:27, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- No doubt. In the next direct section it states "The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace should be listed on this page." Also, #2 under "Reasons to delete a template" is "The template is redundant to a better-designed template" It is templates for discussion as well. I think it will be OK to list it there with an explantion. An admin needs to delete the temp once it is merged anyway.--NortyNort (Holla) 11:34, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

The french wiki has a nice infobox and an ideal image for itFile:BarrageDeContra.JPG♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:54, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Excellent work. I know! Its amongst the highest dams in the world and an extremely notable Swiss engineering topic. Mm, the thing is the river and the valley and the dam are very commonly known as Verzasca and multiple sources name it "Verzasca Dam". Would you support a move to Contra (Verzasca) Dam? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:12, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
Na, you were correct to move it. 13,500 google hits for Verzasca Dam and over a million for Contra dam. Contra Dam it is then.♦Dr. Blofeld 11:17, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
Super work BTW on the Contra Dam!♦ Dr. Blofeld14:16, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, that had some impressive stunts in it. That was the best of the Pierce Brosnan Bond films I think, although I didn't like the part in Cuba and thought the ending was poor. First half though was excellent, Famke Janssen was sizzling, Brosnan at his smarmiest I think. You;d never get me doing a bungy jump. I'd jump out of a plane from several thousand feet but no way would I have the balls to jump off that dam!! I first saw a bunjy venue in 1992 when I was in Florida next to my hotel and the first time I saw it I thought, no way am I ever doing that!! I'd rather free fall than fall and be yanked back, that's what puts me off the most I think. At least with a sky dive from higher up that wouldn't happen so much.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:53, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah the game was superb. I hated Quantum of Solace. The villain was extremely poor, who would believe a little pipsqeak like him would have power over a whole region. Casino Royale was excellent though but not as good as Goldeneye. Connery was obviously the best Bond in the Blofeld era but I enjoyed Roger Moore's films even if they were daft. I actually rate Timothy Dalton as one of the best Bonds contrary to the views of many and think actually he mosts fits Fleming's description of him. Craig just doesn't have the looks of Bond. Dalton had that look about him and the eyes that he could be an assassin. Many would disagree. He did take the role a little seriously but I thought Dalton was better than Craig. World is not enough was OK but Die Another Day was a disaster. ♦Dr. Blofeld 10:20, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Loved Thunderball (film), one of my favourites, I wrote a GA on it! Too much dubbing though and the underwater scenes just went on and on. My favourite Bond film is the first one Dr. No, followed by Goldfinger, From Russia With Love and then Thunderball. Although many cite Man with a Golden Gun as one of the worst it is actually one of my favourites! I like Nick Nack and Christopher Lee and the locations which is the reason I think. The worst Bond film for me is Quantum of Solace, followed by View to a Kill and Die Another Day. Sexiest Bond girl of course was Honey Ryder followed by Fatima Blush in Never Say Never Again, she was undoubtedly the most ruthless of the Bond girls, even more so than Onatopp. Worst Bond girl was Christmas Jones.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:37, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Hoover Dam
Had a very nice tour, they took us to the Arizona powerhouse where the public usually doesn't get to go and outside at the foot, ditto. It was probably one of the rare tours of the dam where intelligent questions were actually asked. Symposium starts in about an hour (there was a reception last night with a short film by Bechtel) but the greatest help may be in publications. I was able to get a Bureau of Reclamation pamphlet from the dam which had some details we didn't have, an I just got my hands on the collected papers which will be presented at the symposium, which should be useful indeed. I was chatting with a professor last night who is giving a paper on Frank Crowe tomorrow. All very interesting.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:45, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- That sounds awesome. I am sure you will have a lot of good material to refine the article with. There weren't too many intelligent questions on my short little tour. The only one was someone asking if they built it with enough concrete; to which he replied that they used 3x as much as needed. I wish I could have done a tour like that.--NortyNort (Holla) 22:28, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know that we saw that much more than the $30 tour. The book of proceedings is very useful, I've already added some points. The popular books had it wrong about the spillway damage, it seems, and I've made some corrections. Work on an article is not done once the TFA runs, in my view, there is still the matter of keeping up standards and accuracy on an article which 6,000 people or so view every single day. I haven't made that much progress on Coulee, but I will.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:10, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- I was wondering what kicked your recent edits off til' I knew you were out there. I am a little surprised with all the hits the article gets; it is on par with the White House! It is a good service to give all the viewers a good article, hopefully it will improve the encyclopedia's reputation. The TFA had over 105k hits which was awesome. As far as the Grand Coulee, I am a bit spent and am taking a break. I also need some new literary resources. I am going to a different library tomorrow. By the way, I noticed Bechtel's celebration from here.--NortyNort (Holla) 11:33, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, they were a main sponsor of the symposium, sponsored the reception Wednesday night and gave us little giveaway desk clocks. The film they showed us is the one that is online there. That was my highest TFA hits ever, topping Natalee Hollowaywhich had about 79.8 as I recall. Actually, the dam gets more hits than Statue of Liberty, which I have asked Raul from running as TFA until at least next July as there are anniversaries coming up. The papers in the proceedings are quite good. There was one shot during one of the presentations of Hoover Dam concrete being laid at night, which is an improvement on the one we have, and which I will try to track down when I get a chance and see if it is PD. They did run all night every night, you know. The only days off were Fourth of July and Christmas, and they were optional, and you didn't get paid. - I think we had the highest TFAR points too. I'm no surprised they poured 24 hrs. a day with the weather. At Grand Coulee, they stopped for a few months in the winter. I think Crowe would lose his mind today with the unions and labor laws.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:12, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- Not to mention environmental impact statements ... I heard an estimate yesterday that Hoover Dam would cost $4 billion to build today, not including stuff like that, and a lot of it is because OSHA would not tolerate a lot of the stuff which went on.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:19, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, definitely. If Hoover Dam was proposed today, it would be an expensive debacle. It is amazing how expensive U.S. labor has become since the 60s. You'll see it with the Grand Coulee Dam; an interesting part is how expensive and difficult it was to construct the Third Powerplant in the 60s and 70s. The countries building huge dams these days, like China, have very few legal obstacles and aren't swayed by environmentalists on the international stage. I am not saying how they carry out dam projects is right but I believe hydro is the best renewable energy resource we have. The biggest power plants are hydro and it is still relatively cheap compared to other renewables.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:31, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, at four billion plus, you could never make it back on electricity sales, especially with the water level in Lake Mead so low.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:24, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

I have more of an appreciation for Crowe now, but he was one hard driver!--Wehwalt (talk) 11:41, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey NortyNort, I was just reading this and thought it would make a pretty cool DYK hook, if you can dig up more information on the Cingino Dam. SmartSE(talk) 12:23, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Really ugly errors
Hi, NortyNort. Are you seeing really ugly red errors too? I see it in almost all dam articles (haven't checked others) since lately. I have notified the talkpage, but surprisingly have not yet received a proper response (that's why I want to know if you see it too). ;) Rehman 15:07, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Japanese dams
HI. I've created some more rather poor Japanese dam stubs. But finding sources is very difficult given the language barrier. I think the articles should be started but I kind of need some assistance to at least provide a source and some basic data if possible. If I start a prefecture at a time perhaps amongst your busy schedule you can help find a source for each one? Japanese dams really need a lot of work on here..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:57, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Japanese kind of gives me headache to look at! I'll hold off on more Japanese dam stubs then until you can quickly source the ones I created yesterday. If we could d a prefecture at a time in future this would be great, its worth having the stubs if they have some data and a source...♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:13, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Infobox Stausee
Hey. Per this and maybe also this, could you move the template to WP:DAMS when you get the time? Thanks :)Rehman 05:15, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, it was closed as no consensus but I thought there was a consensus aside from any ivotes; just move to out of the mainspace. I posted a notice on the template's talk page as to not override the closing. I can move it later this weekend if there are no substantial objections.--NortyNort (Holla) 02:06, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

List of largest dams
I don't think anyone has overhauled it and this list was in my mid-term scope of things to do. Regarding Syncrude, I am not terribly familiar with the dam and don't like tailings dams on the list but after all, it is a dam. If you are interested in dams, there is WikiProject Dams which is focused on improving these articles. We have a to-do list and your insight would be great.--NortyNort (Holla) 03:47, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- Glad you were watching. Thanks for the tip about WikiProject Dams, I will probably end up joining, but not yet. This is the second list of dams I've made major revisions to, the other being List_of_reservoirs_and_dams_in_Australia#Tasmania. My approach to editing wikipedia is: if I look up something independently twice and it's not there then I add it; and I use non-web sources. For this latest list I've broken the second rule, used web sources predominantly, but have on order the ICOLD book "World register of large dams", and will update the wiki list when it arrives and at the same time merge the two wiki lists on that page into one. Of the original 32 dams in the wiki list only 13 had correct data, so it was in urgent need of an overhaul. It'll be very interesting to compare the accuracy of what I was able to put together to the ICOLD information, I already know that ICOLD has a few errors, because ANCOLD does. If you can dig up latitude and longitude on either Kambaratinsk Dam or the Verkhne-Svirskaya hydro plant then please let me know, I couldn't find either on Google Earth. Regarding Syncrude, web sources give the height at variously 40-45, 50 and 40-80 metres, and a published cross section has height 40-45 metres; I've assumed 45 so if it really turns out to be 80 then the estimated volume will have to go up proportionately, but even then will not be anywhere near as large as the originally quoted 540 million cubic metres. I'll wait until I see what ICOLD says about tailings dams before removing them from the list, my personal preference is to leave in part-full tailings dams but remove ones that are full.Mollwollfumble (talk) 22:45, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- "This is the second list of dams I've made major revisions to". Nearly forgot, I wrote the brief wiki ANCOLD article too.Mollwollfumble (talk) 22:56, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds neat. I don't have any good offline references for dams. I usually rely on the internet. A lot of sources vary for heights and all and there are a few decent reliable ones. I usually try to find the builder, owner or operator of the dam for the best info. I will look for those two dams, or where they are supposed to be.--NortyNort (Holla) 10:55, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, the Verkhne-Svirskaya is in Podporozhye on the Svir River; 604824N 334210E. The Kambaratinsk Dam is supposed to be constructed somewhere on the Naryn River but I can't find a good location.--NortyNort (Holla) 12:17, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

NewArticleBot
There have been a few articles missed which I found by going through the log. I am going to adjust the number up as it is better to have to sort through more candidates than not have them picked up. Right now articles are only being picked up if they are categorized, which a new editor is unlikely to do. Ng.j (talk) 05:54, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hello, I responded here. I would like to reduce false positives and unfortunately, it is hard to pick up stubs that may only have the word "dam" in there once. Maybe there is another way around, I am not too familiar with the coding.--NortyNort (Holla) 16:04, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

- Thank you very much for upgrading the article to GA level. I was inspired by my visit on a 7 day cruise to Alaska which my daughter had arranged in July last year. The two pictures of the dam were taken from the helicopter during our visit to the glacier fields. It was one of the best tours that I have ever undertaken in my life span of 72 years. Out of 6 six articles that I wrote after my return, another article, Glacier Bay, also got upgraded to GA recently. I am planning to visit some dams inRajasthan soon and will come back to you for collaborative writing. Working on this GA with you has been a very pleasant experience. Thanks once again.--Nvvchar. 10:52, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors
Hi! I noticed your activity as a Good Article reviewer, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.
If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).
I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:02, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
