Australian Architectural Styles

[edit]
  • Top work on the Architecture article! Well done. It's been on the requested articles list for a long time. Welcome to Wikipedia!

When you get around to it you may want to put together a bit of a user page and add yourself to Australian Wikipedians. If you haven't already, you may want to check out some of these:

G'day, was wondering if you'd be interested in joining WikiProject AFL, the new up and running Aussie rules project we have going. Drop us a line, Rogerthat 12:22, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I am interested, I'll have a look when I've got time : ) Nick carson 09:03, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lost episode guides

[edit]

Hey, in case you weren't aware, we're in the middle of revamping the episode guides for Lost. If you would like to participate, please read the discussion here, and then sign up for any episodes you're interested in. Thanks. Jtrost 20:20, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you are listed as a participant in the WikiProject Melbourne. If you are a Melbourne resident I would appreciate your views on the suggested Meetup in March . Please give some indication of your interest, or otherwise, in the idea. Even a simple "No thanks" with your user name would be welcome and assist in assessing the level of support for a meetup. Thank you.. Cuddy Wifter 06:30, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Freeway plans

[edit]

"Oh and if anyone actually has a copy of or knows where to get the transportation plan or the freeway plans of 1969 I'd apreciate it alot."

Is this what you're after?

Melbourne articles

[edit]

Just wanted to say I'm very impressed with your writing style! I'm converting all the infoboxes in Melbourne and surrounds to the Wikiproject Australian Places standard, and I've seen some real shockers (Seaford with its 50+ wikilinks and Frankston South with its leafy upper-middle-class prose) It's nice to see that a number of Melbourne users are committed to creating informative and interesting articles. (I'm from Perth btw, but if asked to pick a second home, it would be a choice between Melbourne and Vancouver - I've spent time in and loved both.) If you do a web search for black christmas bushfire, then your question as to why I named the page as such will be answered. The use of the word black refers to the fact that it was not a happy day, not to the smoke. I will however place a redirect from 2001-02 NSW bushfires to the Black Christmas page. Thewiikione 03:09, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect sounds good. It is a bit annoying when a name becomes popular but isn't quite the best the name can be. Nick carson 11:37, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw, you've been featured in the Melbourne Green Guide for your work, such as United Petroleum. I envy you. :P --AAA! (AAAA) 07:46, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on the GG article. I was pleasantly surprised at the portrayal of Wikipedia in the article (another Fairfax feature article I assisted with, on another topic, ended up far worse) - thanks for helping to represent us so well! --Evan C (Talk) 11:51, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, it was a small part to play. The journalist just sent me an email out of nowhere after randomly looking at articles here, so when he rang me I just told him straight out how it was, and thats that. Nice to get some recognition! Some nice advertising for Apple in the photo too. Also there was an administrator they gave mention to. As for the article itself, I reckon it gave a good unbiased overview of wikipedia that, for anyone who didn't know anything about it, would describe it well. Nick carson 11:58, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting how they plucked you out of nowhere. Anyway I came here to extend my congratulations (is that the right word? It's still a nice achievement :)) at your appearance in the Green Guide. I agree the article was well-balanced. Keep up the good work, Rogerthat Talk 09:14, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I spend not nearly as much time as other people do on wikipedia, so I just crossed paths with some luck for a change :) If anything, I'd prefer good feedback on peer reviews and featured article candidates, direct your congratulations there :) Nick carson 12:44, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beetle featured article

[edit]

Hi Nick, in the DE version (german) I am one of the main contributors to the Volkswagen Beetle article (de:VW_Käfer) (which is a featured article in the german wikipedia). I would help you in translation assistance and references if possible. aircooled regards (last Emden made german original version from 1975 in my garage, needs some works.. I had ca. 40 beetles repaired while being student.. It cost me a look of around 0.15 sec to identify the production year of a beetle.. ;-)) ) Cooperation Proposal: 1-you look into the de version, 2- you tell me which chapters of the DE version you want to get translated, 3- I do a pre translation and put it on your user discussion subpage (to be installed), 4- you do the rest in EN.. If this would run well & with fun we also eventually could cooperate for some articles on old BMW motorcycles.. BerndB 18:34, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nick,

here it is...

For a better cross check I left the german words. Pls. drop them and (..please..) listen to my sighs on my lousy english. ;-)) and have some careful hands on the english text..

Limousine

[edit]

The development work of Professor Porsche involved some test cars. First there were three prototypes built at Mercedes Factory in Stuttgart. These were presented to the “Fuhrer” Adolf Hitler. He was conviced with the works (=they looked OK for him) and he ordered the works to go on with help from the Reichsarbeitsorganisation (national labor organsation).

---

Prototype (1934-1946)

  • 1935 they built 30 test cars of the „Versuchswagen 30“ series (“30 test cars / Test car 30”) . They were tested and inspected intensively including mountain driving (to drive slope roads between mountains.. sigh.. my english.. ;-))

---

  • 1936 The ongoing improved „Typ 60“ was yet close to the later planned series version.

---

Serienmodell

  • 1936 they presented the standard models as a Limousine tye and a cabriolet type (=not a „roadster“ as a roadster is a two seater and the beetle was planned as a four or five passenger car also with open roof.)

---

Different models during the 2nd world war

  • The standard limousine, produced since 1939 in only some examples, only deviated in some minor details to the last test car series.
  • 1941 started the production of the “Kubelwagen” / Kübelwagen (german Umlaut, military version, four doors four passengers, lifted body for use on rough surfaces)
  • In 1942 the type 128 was manufactured first, a four wheel drive amphibic car with a production of around 150 cars.
  • in 1942 the type 155 was manufactured, a “half chain drive” Kübelwagen with tires in front and a tank drive rear. Only some cars were built.
  • Starting 1943 they built the „Kommandeurswagen“ (commanders car) with the „Kübel“ platform. The look looked like the Type 87, but the „Kommandeurswagen“ has no four wheel drive.
  • Between 1943 and 1945 there were some KdF-Wagen (KdF = „Kraft durch Freude“ / „Power by pleasure“ (??)) and Kübelwagen also with a wood gas generator system, to be identified by the gas generator which modified the car´s front remarkably.

---

Typ 51 (1945-1946)

  • 1945 started a production of „post war“ varieties as Type 51 with the platform of the Type 82, for example with a box body for the postal services.

The following production years are „model years“ which started merely after the common works holidays of the year before. During the works holidays they modified the production equipment, and afterwards, starting september, they started production of (in details) improved cars. So a “model 1953” was produced between September 1952 and August 1953.

---

  • 1946 the „Standard Limousine“ / simple limousine started, today known as a „Brezelkäfer“, for the oval vertically split window in the rear.
  • 1949 kam das Export-Modell mit Chromstoßstangen heraus.
  • 1949 was the first year for the „Export model“ with chrome bumpers.
  • Since 1950 a textile sunroof was optional. In the same year the production of hydraulic brakes started for the Export type; former cars (and the Standard type up to 1961) have steel wire driven brakes (“Bowdenzug”).

thumb|right|180px|VW Export, Bj. 1951

  • In 1951 there was a series of cars equipped with movable flaps in front of the A columns (between front wheel and door) for aeration of the lower/feet compartment. (..sigh..;-)) The flaps were named as “rheumatic flaps”… (no comment. Ahh, one: extremely seldom today, and highly priced…)
  • 1952 the „turning windows“ in the doors started (small windows in front of the “up-down” windows)
  • 1953 the oval back window came and the „Brezel“ split window disappeared. The beetles of these years now are named “Ovali” (in GER, with a smile on the face).
  • 1954 engine power increased from 24,5 to 30 HP.
  • 1957 the bigger front window and a „rectangle“ rear window started, the oval rear window disappeared.
  • 1958 erhielten die Inland-Käfer größere Außenspiegel.
  • 1958 the cars for germany got bigger mirrors.
  • Starting 1959 the door handles got press knobs (..sigh..) instead of the former flap handles. A stabilizator is installed at the front axle (of the export types only).

  • 1960 the „Winker“ disappeared, the direction indicator flapping up and down. Now “Blinker” indicate a turn right or left. The engine gets a completely redisigned engine block with a longer crankshaft. Now 34 HP instead of the former 30 HP. The “Standard” yet gets the old engine. The difference can be identified at the gasoline pump. Old version horizontally, left of the generator drive wheel, new version standing nearly vertically left of the generator fixture (..sigh..). And difference in the “european” speedometer: 30 HP `= 120 km/h max, 34 HP = 140 km/h max. (Maybe also in the USA a difference in the mph. speedos maximum?..)

---

VW 1200/1300/1500 (1961-1974)

  • 1961 a gasoline meter for the Export model, driven by swimmer and a Bowden wire, instead of the cock / choke. In the Standard model and the following “simple” model 1200 A the cock remaints until 1967.

  • 1962 the heating system is modified to an indirect system for safety reasons. Since then there are heat exchangers around the exhaust tubes of the cylinders 1 and 3 (the “front” cylinders with a long way for the exhaust gases to the exhaust pot. Former system blew the heated engine cooling air directly to the passengers compartment, including eventually escaped exhaust gases in case of a defect motor.

  • Since 1963 for Export cars a steel sunroof is optional. The textile open roof (with a bigger oppening) is still optional for the Standrad type. The Standard now also gets a hydraulic brake. (The changing of brake cables or a clutch cable always was a horrible job in the “cardan” tunnel of cars without hydraulic brake.. Five cables in an extremely narrow space..)

  • 1964 again the areas of the windows increase. The Standard type is renamed to “1200 A” since november 1964, the former “grey only!” for the Standard now is modified to some “less colourful” colors as dark blue and dark red. Last orders for the 30 HP engine. See “speedo” hint above.

  • 1965 the VW 1300 is presented with a 40 HP engine. The wording “Export” for the “Chrome model” is dropped. The 1200 A model (ex “Standard”) now gets the 34 HP engine. The front axle of both no longer contains bolts to be greased, since then there are ball bearings at the end of the wheel bearing levers (..sigh..) for simplified maintenance. Only four grease points remain: for the plain bearings of the levers at the front axle. The whell caps now are flat, and the steel wheels get holes for better brake cooling. see Photograph of a Firebrigade beetle VW 1200 A

  • 1966 the VW 1500 is presented with an engine of 44 HP derived form the VW Bus. It is the first model with a disk brake, to be identified by four whell bolts on a smaller diameter instead of five on an outer diameter. One year later the four bolts wheels are standard version regardless if disk brake or drum brake, five bolts wheels stop.

  • 1967 Shortened engine cover. Lamp glasses vertical. Modified rear lamps („Bügeleisen“ / „Flat iron type“) and box bumpers („eisenbahnschienen“ / „railway rails“) procuce a new image. All beetles now have four bolts wheels.

  • 1968 comes the outer tank flap. Now there is no longer need to show his luggage when refilling gasoline, the luggage cover can remain closed.

  • 1969 silver wheels instead of black or body color wheels

VW 1302 (1970-1972)

After 25 years of beetle post war production they present a completely modified model with bigger luggage compartment and new frame design. Starting from then there are two lines of beetles:

    1. The „old“ models 1200 and 1300 remain with the lever type front axle and the „pendular“ rear axle. Only the automated gearbox models have a modernized rear axle.

    1. The „new“ models 1302 (up to 1972, since then 1303) have a McPherson spring front axle and a modernized, much safer rear axle regardess if equipped with automated or manual gearbox.

  • 1970 With the VW 1302 the 1300 cccm engine increases in power to 44 HP. A 50 HP engine with 1600 ccm is optional (“S type” for VW 1302 S and W 1302 LS).

So the beetle model range increase to seven types:

    • VW 1200 A, 34 PS
    • VW 1300 A, 44 PS
    • VW 1300 L, 44 PS
    • VW 1302 and VW 1302 L, 44 PS
    • VW 1302 S and VW 1302 LS, 50 PS

  • 1971 a new engine cover comes wiht increased number of louvers, as the faster engines got thermic problems. For instance the outlet voalve of the third cylinder is a critical item in all beetle engines with more than 34 HP. In cases of lacking cooling the valve plate melts down from the shaft and falls into the cylinder, with the consequence of an engine defect. (In the linked DE article there is a VW 1300 engine with exact this type of damage. See my photographs at a repair session for my broher-in-law.. Sigh.. ;-)) )

  • 1972 On February 17 the producction wolrd record of the Ford T model is broken by a beetle. Since then the VW beetle is the world´s most produced car.

VW 1303 (1972-1975)

  • 1972 the model VW 1303 comes, with a panoramic front window and new rear lamps („Elefantenfüße“ / „elephants legs“)

  • 1975 For the 1975 model, the last production year of the 1303 limousine, the blinkers (indicators) are integrated in the front bumper. The exhaust cover plate is replaced by the bigger US version (former for catalyst cover only). Beetle production is transferred to Emden at the coast as the huge Wolfsburg factory now produces VW Golf / Rabbit cars.

  • 1976 Since summer 1975 the german beetle Limousine production is stopped. Only the Convertible / Cabrio is produced at the Karman factory in Osnabrueck until January 1980.

"VW 1200" (1974-1985)

With the introduction of the VW Rabbit the production of the 1303 ends, and also the beetle production in Wolfsburg. The VW 1200 beetle with the “old” chassis / frame and a really spartanic interior of bad quality is still offered, comes now out of the Emden factory.

  • 1978 ends the produciotn of beetle Limousines in germany. In south africa, mexico and Brazil beetles are still in production, brazilian version is the “small windows” version produced with the former german body pressing tools, in german use up to 1964. They use this version because of the trpoc temperatures, to lower the sun heating f the compartment.

  • 1981 In Puebla (Mexiko) läuft am 15. Mai der 20-millionste Käfer vom Band.
  • 1981, May 15th In Puebla, Mexico the 20 millionst beetle is produced.

  • 1985 the official import of beetles from mexcio to germany ends, with a series named „50 Jahre Käfer“ („50 yeard of beetle“) , and a last series for the german Bundeswehr (army). Since then there are some private companies which deal in beetle import to europe but with no assistance from the big company Volkswagen.

  • An import company brings a beetle with the long textile roof, optionally driven electrially. The Mexico beetle often is critizised for its lack of chrome and the spartanic view. nearly as a standrad feature the importing companies equip the beetles with chrome lamps and bumbers.. Since 1992 all beetles have a new engine with a controlled catalyst system (engine code ACD 1600 ccm 50 HP). Mexican beetles can be identifeid by their sole exhaut tube on the left side under the rear bumper. In the german newspapers they report on a sales action of a supermarket REWE which offers new beetles for 16.666 DM (i.e. 6.500 USD) but which ends in a legal battle with the Volkswagen company about guarantee conditions and spare parts delivery. Volkswagen Germany does not intend to bear any further responibility for beetles or parts for them.

  • 2003 July 30 th: beetle production stops. From the last series “ultima edicion” with chrome parts, white tyres and colorful bodies several hundreds of cars go to germany imported by a private company. They at first have to be stored in Bavaria as the import company got no licence for traffic use as the last beetles have no electronic motor control diagnosis lamp which is obligatory in Europe. With a special license of the bavarian government the legal dispute is put besides after weeks of rumor, claims and blocked money of the clients. The pre-last beetle is for a big german atomobilists newspaper (“Auto Bild” in Hamburg), and the ever last produced beetle of 21.529.464 produced cars goes to the “Autostadt” Museum in Wolfsburg.

Hi. When you uploaded Image:Seawall.JPG, you did not specify complete source and copyright information. Another user subsequently tagged it with {{GFDL-presumed}} and, for some time, it has existed on Wikipedia under the assumption that you created the image and you agreed to license it under the GFDL. This assumption, however well-meaning, is not legally sufficient and the tag is being phased out. Images using it are being deleted.

This image has been tagged for deletion and will be deleted in one week if adequate copyright information is not provided.

If you, personally, are the author of this content, meaning that you took the photograph yourself or you created the chart yourself (and it does not use any clipart that you did not create), please retag the image with a free image copyright tag that correctly describes your licensing intentions, usually {{GFDL-self}} or {{PD-self}}. Please also make sure if you have not already done so that you write a good description of what the image depicts, when you took the photo, and other important details. This will allow Wikipedia to continue using the image.

If you did not create the image or if it is derived from the copyrighted works of others, please keep in mind that most images on the internet are copyrighted and are not suitable for use on Wikipedia. Wikipedia respects the copyrights of others and does not use images unless we know that they have been freely licensed. Any creative work is automatically copyrighted, even if it lacks a copyright notice. Unless the copyright holder has specifically disclaimed their rights to the image and released it under the GFDL or another compatible license, we cannot use it. If you did not create the image, and cannot make the image compliant with Wikipedia:Non-free content, simply do nothing and it will be deleted in a week. All other non-free images must follow these rules.

Please feel free to contact me on my talk page or leave a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions with any questions you may have. Thank you. Aksibot 21:10, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
