[edit]Curious if you have a link to the the Choteau diary? This is fascinating, I thought I knew all Missouri misconceptions. I’m very willing to be proven wrong. - Yes, they date to about 1810-1820 and are kept in special collections at UMSL's Mercantile Library. A scanned copy of the original can be found here. I do not speak/read French, so I personally read the library's translation which can be found here. LaSombrerera (talk) 14:55, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
- Ok I’ve been doing some digging. Louie IX is the namesake of St. Louis; Louie XV, after all, is not a Saint. So apparently Laclède was being witty and named the city after the beloved saint/symbol of France, but also in honor of Louise XV, monarch at the time who also took his name from the Saint. - I figured there was probably some basis for the assumption that it was solely named for the saint. St. Louis has deeply rooted Catholic traditions. Perhaps the pages can be amended to include both kings as namesakes for accuracy's sake? As a side note, I actually love that blog! - That post is great, I had no idea, the first city in the U.S. too, we should add that somewhere on Wiki. In regards to the Louies, I’m not too sure about the infobox change yet, information could certainly be added on the earliest St. Louis history article. Are you aware of wikipedia:PSTS? Do you have any non-primary sources to back up the interpretation? I’m particularly hesitant when I know some of the quality sources such as Primm would have surely been acquainted with the diary. - I am admittedly a novice Wikipedia editor, so I was unaware of that page. I have a background in public history which favors primary sources, so I am probably biased in believing the diary itself to be sufficient to at least include a note of both Louises because the diary seems pretty unambiguous to me in showing that Chouteau believed Louis XV to have been influential in the naming. I have not personally read any non-primary sources to further support this, but Auguste Chouteau's papers were published with annotations by Gregory Ames, curator of the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library at UMSL's Mercantile Library. The book is fairly expensive, though. The people in charge of Special Collections at UMSL's Mercantile Library may be of help. - I will try to get to the bottom of this next time I'm in St. Louis, although given the current situation I don't know when that will be. For what it's worth I did watch an interesting youtube video, whose link I've misplaced, by St. Louis Public Radio, that had several academics on to talk about a book they wrote doubting the veracity of Chouteau's claims in the diary in question. For now I think Wiki needs to take the traditional view, but if you turn up anything else, we could reevaluate. 22:46, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- I found a book today in my dad's possessions called St. Louis: A Fond Look Back which was published in 1956. It was written by Martin Quigley, researched by Marjory Douglas and Ruth K Jacobson, and "directed" by Charles van Ravensway (director of the Missouri Historical Society. In the section about the founding of St. Louis, it states that the city was named after "his king [Louis XV] and after his king's patron saint, Louis IX." This supports the suggestion to list both kings on the article as namesakes.--LaSombrerera (talk) 04:16, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
