[edit]

Seems you've found my talk page.

Feel free to leave comments, questions, musings, and messages.

If you feel you've something to add/interject to existing or ongoing entries that's 'ok', but please be sure to add new comments following what's already in place so as not to disrupt or refactor a preceding thread.

If for some reason you feel something already in place needs altered or removed please be sure to first consult with your host rather than take unilateral action on your own.[n 1] Offering such courtesy greatly increases the likelihood of finding mutually satisfactory outcomes.

If your comment uses inline ref citation markup, please include an instance of Reflist-talk as well.[n 2]

Thanks in advance,

Boldfacing of redirect targets talkpage blurb

Boldfacing of redirect target

The initial instance of the term Example has been boldfaced as a redirect target term (i.e. as a term in an article or section targeted by a redirect page; e.g. Example)—a practice recommended by WP:R#ASTONISH, MOS:BOLD#OTHER, and MOS:BOLD#TITLE—so as to help orient readers arriving from redirect links elsewhere and as an example of best practice inline with Wikipedia policy and guidelines.

This is also done, at the first occurrence in running text, of a term that is redirected to the article or one of its sub-sections, whether the term appears in the lead or not.

Reflections

[edit]
Things wot I've learned

Look before you leap

[edit]

At this point—December 2017, multiple years into my Wikipedia editing experience—I've found editors to have widely varying sensibilities and community socio-political status (and, sadly, those don't always align as one might hope/expect) ... I now most always check a user's "View user groups" and "Logs">"Block logs" info links (offered in sidebar when viewing userpages in the desktop browser interface; check relevance of default " Performer:" and "Target:" settings in the log interface) before interacting with them. A sort of assume good faith while also pragmatically checking for supporting data approach.

If one feels an incentive to be more thorough, a glance at an editor's userpage and their user talkpage – and talkpage history (especially if their are indications of frequent archiving/deletion) – can help get a sense of what one's 'getting into' and a quick random skim through "User contributions" may offer insight as well (even if just to get a sense of their communication style in edit summaries). ––A Fellow Editor

Sig

[edit]

If you like what I did with your signature - A Fellow Editor - the mark-up should be:

<span style="font-family:FreeSans; letter-spacing:-0.07em; text-shadow:#CCCCAA 0.1em 0.2em 0.2em;"><span style="color:#BB8822; font-variant:small-caps;">A&nbsp;Fellow</span>&nbsp;<span style="color:#773333;">Editor</span></span>

For your user page:

And for your talk page:

That should solve a few minor issues, with a couple of improvements thrown in. Regards, nagualdesign 04:56, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the sharing code examples; had to edit the sig to get it under the strict 255 character limit (but that's OK, the drop shadow was probably a bit too fancy for my egalitarian username anyhow).
<span style="font-family:FreeSans; letter-spacing:-0.07em;"><span style="color:#BB8822; font-variant:small-caps;">A Fellow</span> <span style="color:#773333;">Editor</span></span>
... Comes in at 254 according to my test editor ... now to see if the WikiP Widget agrees ...
A Fellow Editor ... yep ... I might yet sacrifice the non-breaking spaces ( ) to get my bracketing dashes effect back though ... errr... (&nbsp;) rather. funny that (<code>&nbsp;</code>) failed; hadta' use code. [note: Argghh, look at the markup; the template didn't render it all either (in Chrome on Linux)]
Anyway, am thinking somehting like --A Fellow Editor--
--<span style="font-family:FreeSans; letter-spacing:-0.07em;"><span style="color:#BB8822; font-variant:small-caps;">A Fellow</span> <span style="color:#773333;">Editor</span></span>--
Hmm, gonna' go with 'en-dashes' instead; more streamlined aesthetic. (and darken a bit)
Thanks for the tips and inspiration, --–A Fellow Editor08:51, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I'd tried to get the signature encoding down to a minimum, but I hadn't realized I'd exceeded the limit. Ah well. The non-breaking space is a HTML entity, which supersedes most wiki mark-up regardless of which browser you use. If you want to show it rendered as &nbsp; you have to type &amp;nbsp; since replacing the ampersand (&) with &amp; stops HTML entities from rendering. The reason I put them into the sig was obviously to stop it from line wrapping, which I thought was important, but of course that's entirely up to you. Regarding the dashes and other symbols; sometimes I find the encoding for the HTML entity, copy that into my wiki mark-up, click "Show preview" to see it rendered, then copy the rendered symbol wherever I wish. That way you can convert several characters (eg, &mdash;) into a single character (—). Unfortunately that doesn't work with &nbsp;. nagualdesign 19:55, 28 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Code compression

[edit]

I had an idea: -—<b style="font-family:FreeSans;letter-spacing:-0.05em;text-shadow:#CCA 0.1em 0.2em 0.2em"><i style="color:#AC7D20;font-variant:small-caps">A&nbsp;Fellow</i>&nbsp;<b style="color:#6B2E2E">Editor</b>– gives you -—A Fellow Editor– in exactly 255 characters!

Even if you don't use it I thought you might find the principles of code compression interesting, and maybe useful in the future. Since it isn't obvious I should point out that the signature begins with a hyphen (-) followed by an &mdash; (—) and ends with an &ndash; (–). nagualdesign 06:47, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Even if ... might find the principles of code compression interesting, and maybe useful in the future." – I like the way you think. :  } Tnx nagualdesign, --–A Fellow Editor09:44, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Alack and alas, I tried to enter:
–<b style="font-family:FreeSans;letter-spacing:-0.05em"><i style="color:#AC7D20;font-variant:small-caps">A Fellow</i> <b style="color:#6B2E2E">Editor</b>–
... as my sig on my Meta acct.(and since, @ en:WP as well) and it returned error "Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags." --–A Fellow Editor10:53, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's odd. It's probably the fact that there's a </b> missing immediately after final Editor (I was pushing it a bit) but since it works here I thought it would be okay. Well, you know what thought did! (It followed a muck cart and thought it was a wedding.) At least we learned something. nagualdesign 16:32, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well as I already excised the drop-shadow and lead hyphen + emdash (too fancy/overstated for what I'm going for here; great if I was going for some sort of commercial for-profit branding though, really 'pops' and 'swooshes', kudos!) there should actually now be room for that additional </b> ... Which gets me the non-breaking spaces back that I previously sacrificed ... plus some 'wiggle room'. You know what they say, When you throw a muck cart against a wall ... some of it sticks!"
Extra </b> did the trick ⟶ –A Fellow Editor17:47, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ANI Experiences survey

[edit]

Came across this at User talk:EEng#ANI Experiences survey ...

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

What niche of the Wikipedia ecosystem do you suppose this grotesque inhabits? EEng 03:37, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"Way out in the water, See it swimming" – Pixies, Where Is My Mind
... came to me for a general off-wiki audience.
But as far as on-wiki goes it struck me as something to tuck away until something emergent arises. Perhaps a vehicle for one's first person voice rather than commentary from a removed zoological observer's perspective. Something swimming out of the darkness to give a look and comment, "Tut, tut, I see you!", before fading back into its own murky depths. With a different background a top hat might be adorable. --––A Fellow Editor13:57, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lada

[edit]

I just asked you on Talk:Lada (disambiguation) if a note at the dab project would help to encourage more opinions, but I'd forgotten I'd come from there originally. You're right that it's time to discuss, but during a SNOW oppose RM, there's really no obligation to not edit, and there was many guideline based reasons to do normal dab cleanup. I shall now leave for others to comment, or just for someone to close. Regards Widefox; talk 13:21, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
